NEET is a national-level entrance exam conducted each year for medical aspirants seeking admission to medical institutes. The exam evaluates students' knowledge across three subjects: Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.

Biology alone covers 50% percent of NEET Exam with a total of 90 questions (45 from Zoology and 45 from Botany). Applicants need to attempt all the questions as per new guidelines of NTA (Section A: 35 compulsory questions. Section B: 10 questions).

Seeing the past year's trends, the Biology section of NEET is generally considered the easiest. This is primarily because 80-85% of the questions in NEET-UG were directly sourced from the NCERT syllabus. Only about 15% of the questions are beyond the scope of NCERT. Therefore, candidates who thoroughly study the NCERT Biology textbook have a significant advantage in excelling in this section.

There used to be 97 chapters before, but now it has been reduced to 79 chapters. There is no change in the unit numbers, NEET aspirants still have to prepare 10 units for their upcoming NEET examination.

NEET Biology: High-Weightage and Low-Weightage Chapters

‘Which chapter has more weightage in NEET Biology?’ This is a common question that stucks in every students mind.

In NEET Biology, certain chapters consistently feature more frequently in exams and carry higher marks. These chapters form a major part of the syllabus and are tested across different sessions. Candidates can expect significant weightage from these sections, and focusing on them can boost your chances of scoring well. Some of these chapters include:

  • Human Physiology: This chapter holds significant weight in NEET, contributing around 20% of the total Biology questions. It deals with systems like digestion, respiration, excretion, and circulation.
  • Genetics and Evolution: With around 18% of the questions, this chapter focuses on Mendelian genetics, molecular genetics, and evolution, which are frequently tested.
  • Plant Physiology: This section contributes about 10% to the Biology syllabus and includes topics like photosynthesis, respiration, and transpiration in plants.
  • Cell Cycle and Cell Division: A crucial area with around 9% weightage, emphasizing mitosis, meiosis, and the cellular structure.
  • Ecology: With about 6% weightage, this chapter includes topics like ecosystems, food chains, and environmental conservation.

Low-Weightage Chapters in NEET Biology: Should You Skip Them?

Importance of Covering the Entire Syllabus

While some chapters have lower weightage, they contribute to a significant portion of the total questions and can make the difference in scoring. For instance, Mineral Nutrition and Reproductive Health may seem less important in terms of direct question counts, but can still secure valuable marks.

Strategy for Preparing Low-Weightage Topics

For low-weightage chapters:

  • Focus on concept clarity rather than deep dives.
  • Cover these topics in short study sessions if you find them less familiar.
  • Practice NCERT questions related to these chapters, as they form the foundation.
  • Use revision cards to recall key points efficiently.

NEET Biology Preparation Tips

To maximize your marks:

  • Understand the core concepts thoroughly. Go beyond rote learning to grasp the fundamentals of Genetics, Human Physiology, and Plant Physiology.
  • Solve NCERT-based questions first, as they form the base of many NEET questions.
  • Make flowcharts and mind maps for visual learning, especially for Human Physiology and Ecology.

Managing Time Between High and Low-Weightage Topics

  • Allocate more time to high-weightage chapters and plan your schedule accordingly.
  • Spend a few days on low-weightage topics, focusing on basic concepts and simple applications.

Role of NCERT in NEET Biology Preparation

  • NEET questions are NCERT-based in around 80% of cases. Hence, mastering NCERT biology textbooks is essential.
  • Focus on NCERT examples and in-text questions, as they form the basis of many NEET queries.
  • Practice NCERT exercises thoroughly, as they can help clarify fundamental biological principles.

Topics Frequently Asked in Previous Years

Analyzing past NEET exams reveals that certain topics are repeated frequently. For instance:

  • Human Physiology consistently shows up with questions on respiration, circulation, digestion, and excretory systems.
  • Genetics often includes problem-based questions on Mendelian inheritance, deviations from Mendel’s laws, and chromosomal theory.
  • Plant Physiology often features questions on photosynthesis, transpiration, and nutrient transport.
  • Cell Cycle and Cell Division is often tested with straightforward questions on phases and processes.
  • Ecology frequently appears with questions related to ecosystems, biodiversity, and population studies.

Prioritizing Chapters for Maximum Marks

Given the trends in NEET exams, focus on these high-weightage chapters:

  • Strengthen your Human Physiology knowledge through detailed understanding and regular practice.
  • Prioritize Genetics and Evolution with concept clarity and solving of multiple-choice questions.
