GATE 2025 will be administered by IIT Roorkee for candidates seeking admission to postgraduate engineering programs. The new official website, gate2025.iitr.ac.in, features the updated syllabus and exam pattern provided by the institute. The exam is likely to be conducted from February 1 – 9, 2025, with registrations commencing from August 2024. The exam features both multiple-choice and numerical answer-type questions, lasting for 3 hours. It is conducted for 30 subjects including CSE, EE, EC, ME and Data Science (DA).

What is the GATE Exam?

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an entrance examination conducted in India that primarily tests the comprehensive understanding of undergraduate subjects in engineering and sciences for admission into postgraduate programs. Started in 1983, the exam test the candidate’s aptitude and the score reflects the relative performance level of a candidate. It is a national-level entrance test conducted for M.Tech admissions at IIT, NIT, IIIT and GFTI.

GATE scores are also used by several Indian public sector undertakings for recruiting graduate engineers in entry-level positions which makes it one of the most competitive examinations in India. To excel in GATE 2025, candidates should start preparing early, creating a study plan to cover the entire syllabus. Candidates who are preparing for the 2025 session can download the Previous year question papers for all 30 papers in the section below.

GATE Preparation Tips

How to Prepare for GATE 2025?

The best time to start GATE preparation is the mid of the year. Since the exam is conducted in February, you have a total of 7 months at your disposal. If you use it wisely, you’ll definitely ace the exam. We have curated a 7-month roadmap for you:

Foundation Phase (First 5 Months)

  • Concepts: Focus on understanding concepts as the exam is 98% numericals.
  • Resources: NPTEL Lectures, YouTube channels (Try finding the entire playlists covering the entire syllabus in less time).
  • Syllabus: Cover the entire syllabus, if you’re preparing for CSE Branch, in the section below- there’s a list of all the books with the important chapters.
  • Practice PYQs: Solve previous year questions for the last 15-20 years.
  • Time Management: Develop a time management strategy as 8 months is all you have to prepare.

Final Phase (Last 2 months)

  • Revision: Revise the concepts and focus on practising problems.
  • Test Series: Enroll for a good test series and make sure you analyze your performance.
  • Important: Almost all toppers finish their syllabus by the month of November.

Tips for Effective Study

  • Mindset
    • Develop a burning desire to succeed in GATE. Go into mock mode.
    • Maintain a healthy lifestyle with good sleep, exercise, and food.
    • Believe in yourself and be persistent.
  • Active Recall: Don’t just passively reread your notes. Actively recall information by trying to solve problems without looking at the material list.
  • Revision Techniques: Revise previously done concepts on the next day or in regular intervals to improve memory retention. Learn how temporary memory and permanent memory work.
  • Short Notes: Take notes of key concepts, formulas, and variable names with units and important derivativations. Learn about Cornell's Note-taking system and use it for studying.

Additional Apps and Resources:

  • Freedom: it blocks distracting websites while studying
  • Notion: helps plan your daily schedule
  • Forest: gamifies focus by growing a virtual tree (don’t let it die!!)

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Ques. Is GATE Conducted twice an year?

Ans. No, GATE is conducted once an year usually on the first or second weekend of February. It is conducted by IITs in India and its score is valid for three years.

Ques. Is GATE better than CAT for BTech students?

Ans. Both have its own perks and cons but most of all it depends on the interest of candidate’s interests. If they are interest in pursuing tech related field further in case of MTech, it makes sense. But if the candidate wants to explore the management side of things, CAT is the way to go. Both have just about the same placement figures, however, owing to the high fees of pursuing MBA, GATE offers a better ROI.
