JEE Main 2026 Marks vs Rank

The table below shows how your marks in JEE Main 2026 Paper 1 (out of 300) translate into an approximate percentile and All India Rank. These figures are based on analysis across both sessions and all shifts. Since NTA uses shift-wise normalization, the marks needed for a specific percentile can vary by 10–20 marks depending on paper difficulty.

Marks (out of 300) Approx. Percentile Approx. AIR
290–300 99.999+ 1–15
270–289 99.99 16–100
250–269 99.95+ 100–500
220–249 99.5–99.9 500–7,000
200–219 99.0–99.5 7,000–14,000
180–199 98.0–99.0 14,000–28,000
150–179 96.5–98.0 28,000–55,000
120–149 95.0–96.5 55,000–70,000
100–119 92.0–95.0 70,000–1,12,000
80–99 88.0–92.0 1,12,000–1,68,000
50–79 73–88 1,68,000–3,80,000

The above data is based on JEE Main 2026 analysis across all shifts. Easier shifts require more marks for the same percentile. A score of 200+ marks typically puts you at the 99th percentile, while the General qualifying cutoff of 93.41 percentile corresponds to roughly 100–120 marks in an average-difficulty shift.

JEE Main 2026 Preparation Tips and Best Books

JEE Main tests your speed and conceptual clarity in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Here are key preparation tips and the best books recommended by toppers and coaching experts.

Preparation Tips

  • Start with NCERT: Around 60–70% of Chemistry questions and a significant part of Physics come directly from NCERT. Finish NCERT before moving to any reference book.
  • Focus on high-weightage topics: In Physics — Current Electricity, Optics, Modern Physics. In Chemistry — Coordination Compounds, Organic Reactions, Electrochemistry. In Mathematics — Calculus, Coordinate Geometry, Matrices and Determinants.
  • Take mock tests weekly: One full-length mock test per week builds exam temperament and helps you track weak areas. Time yourself strictly.
  • Use both sessions strategically: Session 1 in January works as a real exam experience. Your best percentile from both sessions is considered for the final AIR, so appearing in both sessions is always beneficial.
  • Skip removed topics: Mathematical Induction, Heights and Distances (Maths), Surface Chemistry, States of Matter, and Polymers (Chemistry) are no longer in the JEE Main syllabus. Do not waste time on them.
  • Create formula sheets: Make chapter-wise notes with key formulas and typical question types for quick last-minute revision.
  • Solve previous year papers: At least 10 years of JEE Main papers should be solved before the exam. This helps you understand question patterns and the level of difficulty.
  • Target 99 percentile: Based on 2026 data, you need around 190–220 marks (depending on shift difficulty) to reach the 99th percentile. This corresponds to an AIR of around 10,000–14,000.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Ques. When did JoSAA Counselling 2026 start?

Ans. JoSAA 2026 counselling registration and choice filling started today, on June 2, 2026, at josaa.nic.in. The window is open till June 11, 2026, and the Round 1 seat allotment result is expected on June 13, 2026. JoSAA will conduct 5 rounds of seat allotment for IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs.

Ques. What is the JEE Main 2026 qualifying cutoff for General category?

Ans. The JEE Main 2026 qualifying cutoff for General (UR) category is 93.4123549 percentile. This is the minimum percentile required to be eligible for JEE Advanced 2026. A total of 96,873 General category candidates qualified under this cutoff. The 2026 cutoff is the highest in the last four years.

Ques. Who scored AIR 1 in JEE Main 2026?

Ans. Aarush Singhal from Chandigarh secured AIR 1 in JEE Main 2026 by scoring 100 percentile in Session 2. A total of 26 candidates scored 100 percentile in Session 2, and 12 candidates scored 100 percentile in Session 1. Three candidates — Kabeer Chhillar, Pasala Mohith, and Arnav Gautam — scored a perfect 300/300 in Session 1.

Ques. How many students qualified for JEE Advanced 2026?

Ans. A total of 2,50,182 candidates qualified through JEE Main 2026 to appear for JEE Advanced 2026. After the JEE Advanced 2026 exam on May 17, the result was declared on June 1, 2026, and 56,880 candidates finally qualified out of 1,79,694 who appeared in both papers.

Ques. Is 75% in Class 12 compulsory for JEE Main 2026?

Ans. The 75% criterion (65% for SC/ST) applies to admission to NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs, not to appearing in the JEE Main exam. You can appear in JEE Main without meeting this percentage requirement. However, you must score at least 75% in Class 12 to be eligible for final admission through JoSAA.

Ques. How many attempts are allowed in JEE Main?

Ans. You can appear in JEE Main up to 6 times in total — 2 sessions per year for 3 consecutive years. For example, if you first appear in JEE Main in January 2026, you are eligible through April 2028. There is no restriction on age for JEE Main attempts.

Ques. What is the difference between JEE Main and JEE Advanced?

Ans. JEE Main is conducted by NTA and provides admission to NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. JEE Advanced is organised by an IIT (IIT Roorkee in 2026) and is the only gateway to the 23 IITs. To sit for JEE Advanced, you must first qualify JEE Main and be among the top 2,50,000 scorers. JEE Advanced is significantly more difficult than JEE Main in terms of conceptual depth and question complexity.

Ques. Which NIT can I get with 95 percentile in JEE Main 2026?

Ans. A 95 percentile in JEE Main 2026 corresponds to approximately AIR 65,000–75,000. At this rank, you may get mid-tier NITs such as NIT Allahabad, NIT Bhopal, or NIT Durgapur in non-CSE branches. CSE at top-tier NITs like NIT Trichy requires an AIR below 2,000, which needs 99.8+ percentile. Your home state quota can significantly improve your chances at state NITs.

Ques. How is the JEE Main percentile calculated?

Ans. NTA uses the percentile normalization method. Your NTA score (percentile) = (100 × number of candidates who scored equal to or less than you in that shift) ÷ (total candidates in that shift). Since different shifts have different difficulty levels, NTA normalizes scores across all shifts before computing the final All India Rank. This ensures fairness regardless of which shift you appeared in.

Ques. How many marks are needed to score 99 percentile in JEE Main 2026?

Ans. Based on JEE Main 2026 data, scoring 190–220 marks out of 300 typically places you at the 99th percentile, depending on the difficulty of your shift. In easier shifts, you may need 205–220 marks; in harder shifts, 185–200 marks may suffice for the same percentile. The 99th percentile corresponds to roughly AIR 10,000–14,000.
