NEET full form is National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test. The test is also referred to as NEET UG 2024 examination. NEET UG 2024 is a national level entrance test conducted by National Testing Agency (NTA). The test is been conducted for students seeking to take admission in undergraduate medical (MBBS), dental (BDS) and AYUSH (BAMS, BUMS, BHMS, etc.) courses.

It is considered as one of the largest entrance examinations. On July 18, 2013, the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for admissions into all medical and dentistry colleges was declared unlawful by the Supreme Court of India. The high court declared that a unified examination by the Medical Council of India was unconstitutional.

Nevertheless, on April 11, 2016, it was reinstated as a five-judge Constitution bench overturned the previous ruling. It also lets the Central Government and the Medical Council of India (MCI) continue using the common entrance exam until a new court decision is made regarding its legitimacy. Now that we have discussed the history of exams, let’s move toward the examination pattern.

NEET 2024 exam date has been scheduled for May 05, 2024. The test will be conducted in a single shift. The registration process for NEET 2024 has been started and it will continue till March 16, 2024. NEET 2024 exam pattern is an online OMR sheet-based exam. You will be asked questions from Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. The biology paper is again sub-categorized into two parts, Botany and Zoology. The question paper is divided into Sections A and B for each subject.

According to NEET 2024 exam pattern, each right answer dwells +4 marks, while incorrect answers deduct marks as -1. All unattended questions are marked as 0. The total duration of NEET 2024 exam is 3 hours and 20 minutes, and questions have been set into 13 languages. Candidates can opt for a Question Paper in any one of the 13 languages. NEET Brief History

NEET Full Form: A Brief History

In December 2010, the Gazette of India published by the Medical Council of India (MCI) spoke about enhancing the methods for the admission of students who wish to pursue MBBS degrees. The “Regulations on Graduate Medical Education, 2010” further called for the introduction of a single eligibility cum entrance exam for the admission to MBBS course, i.e., National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (full form of NEET).

It specified the qualifications and eligibility criteria to appear for this examination. The Supreme Court also approved the change brought out by MCI to hold a common entrance examination for MBBS and PG courses. It was announced on May 5, 2013, that the Government of India is conducting NEET for admission to both undergraduate and postgraduate medical courses.

However, on July 18, 2013, the Supreme Court of India canceled the examination due to 115 petitions filed against the exam by various states due to the difference in the syllabus proposed by MCI and the one followed by the respective state boards. The MCI was persistent in conducting this examination and ultimately won the case in 2016.

In 2016, NEET exam was conducted in two phases i.e., NEET-I and NEET-II. The pattern and syllabus were the same as that of the AIPMT 2015 examination.

Before NEET, states conducted their own entrance tests. NEET replaced AIPMT (All India Pre Medical Test) and other state-level examinations.
