Q: How do toppers at IIT, especially IIT-Kharagpur study?

A few of my friends were Institute toppers and I asked them about their study method. Most of my topper friends study just 2 days before exams in the library and then teach their friends and clear their doubts. Another topper friend solved all the previous year question papers of the subject and uploads the solutions on the Facebook group a day before the exam. She never missed any class, had great handwriting and prepared great notes. So basically, toppers , prepare for the exams way before most of us even begin. They are kind, selfless and are ready to help anyone who is unable to cope up. Ultimately, every student has his unique way of studying.

Q: How easy is it to change branch in IIT Kharagpur?

My cousin had got a branch change from Mechanical engineering to Electronics engineering (ECE). He shared his experience with me of how easy it was to get a branch change. The primary and most important thing is to be regular and give equal attention to all subjects. You have to focus on your studies only and not let any distractions take the better of you. Be firm on your goal and give up all time-wasting activities. You need to be rightly motivated and determined to achieve these goals. Not losing hope is the key as one or two exams do not define you. You will get ample opportunities to prove yourself so just keep working hard. My cousin scored below average in the middle of the 2nd semester. However, she got this sudden motivation and studied hard and was able to score an overall CGPA of 9.64. She studied consistently every day and was able to change her branch eventually.

Q: Why is IIT Kharagpur Electrical Engineering department so deadly? How do they differ from others' IIT Electrical Department?

My brother had offers from IITs to choose any branch except CSE and chose Electrical Engineering in IIT KGP. To date, he does not regret his decision. There are ups and downs in every Institute; it just takes time to adapt yourself to such situations. It is true that some professors overdo it and push you to the extreme, but if you look at this in a positive manner, it’s their pushing that eventually helps you succeed. There are many seniors who might make fun of your tiny efforts in the labs but trust me, today when they will look back, they will surely be regretting the time they wasted watching movies or series. My brother told me that Electrical Engineering gave him so many friends and experiences that make him yearn for college life today. The labs are old-fashioned and lack much activity in contrast to a SigNet lab/ Power Systems lab. Curriculum: The primary aim of the course curriculum offered in Electrical Engineering at IIT KGP is to impart to students tools and skills that will make it possible for them to excel in departments such as Electronics, Communication, Computers, Aerospace, and Energy. Job prospects: An important point to note is that Electrical Engineering does not prepare you for a job but for higher education in the respective areas. Many people from the department pursue M.S. in Aerospace and Material Sciences. Faculty: While many may not agree, the faculty is excellent except for a few. The cream faculty include Prof. D Das, Prof TKB, Prof S Patra, and Prof S Chattopadhyay among others. Interacting with them might change your opinion regarding the IIT KGP faculty. Research: The research is obviously not at par with that conducted in CS or EC, but it surely does justice to the department itself. I think it’s high time people clear misconceptions about Electrical Engineering and develop a positive opinion about it. We should stop running after jobs and companies and in turn let companies seek us.

Q: What advice would you give to a fresher at IIT Kharagpur?

Every person will have a different opinion on what advice work best for freshers. Instead of giving you a list of things to follow, I will suggest you just focus on 3 key points Maintain your academics: The primary focus should be your academics and staying at the top of your class. Don’t let your CGP fall below 8 throughout your life at KGP. Learn new things: This does not include just DC++, Counter-Strike, or FIFA. Explore new things such as workshops, society interviews, and sports, or take part in different inter-halls. Make friends: Surviving in an IIT can be much easier with the right set of friends. To interact with your hostel buddies and make new friends that will stay with you for the rest of your life. Overall, you need a highly positive mindset before joining IIT. You need to be passionate about things and be ready to work hard and achieve them.

Q: I am a first year student of IIT Kharagpur. I am not in any society. I have a bad CGPA. Is there anything I can do?

This is a common problem among freshers at IIT Kharagpur. Their CGPA is initially very low and they fail to become a part of any society. While this certainly is a crucial issue, it can be addressed so you don’t have to worry too much and demotivate yourself. Here are 3 simple ways to overcome this problem Academics: Before anything comes academics. So the first thing you should do to come out of such an issue is to improve your CGPA. This isn’t that difficult since one can easily score well by just studying 1-2 weeks prior to exams in IITs. Attend all classes and find the subject that is your strength and work on it. Focus on skills not resume: Shift the focus from building a sound resume to inculcating sound skills. For instance, the dramatics society will add to your speaking skills and confidence. The same can be achieved by just interacting more with people and attending inter-halls. One does not have to build their resume but their skill only. Hosting your department festival will provide you with managerial skills. So work on such activities and don’t run after societies. Take things lightly: Like Steve Jobs once said, “The best resumes never change the world.”, he literally proved it. Neither did he have a good GPA nor was he part of a good society, yet today he is among the richest and most successful people on Earth. Not being a part of society can be taken positively. One has a lot of free time on his hands and can invest the same in interesting things and learn new things. So the key is to work on your academics, develop skills and take it easy.

Q: What should be the preference order between: IIT KGP, IITR, IITG and IIT BHU? Why?

IIT KGP has been ranking among the top IITs for over a decade now. It is widely recognized globally. If you are planning on pursuing higher education overseas, doing your degree from IIT KGP can help you a lot. In fact, having a degree from IIT KGP gives you maximum leverage to choose whatever career path you want in engineering. Although IIT BHU and IIT Roorkee became IITs later, there are very old institutes. Both BHU and Roorkee have immense respect in the academic world, all across the globe. But these two aren’t considered among the top 5 IITs when it comes to international reputation and career opportunities. IIT Guwahati was established quite recently. But it has made an immense stride in this limited time period. The only downside for the institute is the limited alumni network and industry recognition. When compared generally, the preference order of these institutes will be - IIT KGP>IIT BHU=IITR>IITG However, before choosing any of these institutes, you should consider your interest. Choose the best institute that you are getting for your branch of choice.

IIT Kharagpur Campus

The campus of IIT Kharagpur is located 120 kilometres west of Kolkata. The campus is located five kilometres away from Kharagpur Railway Station in the west Midnapore district. One might experience difficulties in the beginning as there is problems with hostel allocation and also the hostels are not very good.
The pressure is huge as compared to other institutes. Therefore it is suggested to manage it from the beginning.

Admission:

For the course, one must have a bachelor of science degree in physics and must have a CGPA over 6. They need to appear for a joint entrance test for MSc (JAM) conducted by various IIT and IISc. This examination is conducted in the 2nd week of February every year. The forms of the examination are released in October every year. The application fee is around 1800. The exam is conducted once every year and it the difficulty level is a bit greater than average. It requires a preparation of around 6-8 months to qualify with good marks. For the entrance, there is all possible reservations allowed by the government of India such as OBC, EWS, SC/ST, PWD, etc.

You've to Qualify JEE ADVANCED to get into IIT Kharagpur. For Chemical Engineering you need a rank < 6000 in the exam. It's not an easy exam out of 1200000 JEE main Test takers only 8000 get an good IIT.

Eligibility for this course is through jee advanced exam. After which we have to go through a josaa counselling part where we select the colleges and we get one according to our rank. The reservation plays a very vital role to get into one course. After this we get a link portal of college ERP. This portal should be improved that is the only drawback.

Campus of IIT - KGP is literally insane. IIT KGP has the largest campus with 2200 acres any college Indian ever has.

Nothing, i like everything about this college.

Admission:

To get admission in this course firstly we need to secure atleast 75% in our respective boards and then we have to clear JEE Mains exam with a better percentile to appear in JEE Advanced exam then we have to clear it with a good marks.

Institute Scholarships

Institute scholarships are the type of fee waiver programs that are awarded from the Institute funds. There are awarded on the basis of merit-cum-means to all eligible students. The students eligible for the Institute scholarship at IIT Kharagpur are 4-year BTech (Hons), 5-year Dual Degree, 5-year BArch (Hons.) and 5-year Integrated MSc courses and 4-year BS program, except the students belonging to SC and ST (who are eligible for Post-Matric Scholarship). The students who fulfill the conditions after this appearance shall be eligible for the award of the Merit-Cum-Means (MCM) scholarship. These scholarships will be offered to no more than 25% of students admitted to Undergraduate and Dual Degree programs each year. The Board of Governors will decide on the monetary worth of these scholarships from time to time. There will be an exemption from paying Institute tuition for all recipients of the MCM scholarship.

Endowment and Alumni-Funded Scholarships

Endowments and Alumni Funded scholarships are the scholarships that are awarded through endowment funds. To be eligible for this scholarship the term best student or the student who has secured the highest CGPA in the immediately preceding semester amongst all the students of the same batch.

IIT Kharagpur Foundation (IITKGPF) of USA Award Program for International Internships

Under the IIT Kharagpur Foundation (IITKGPF) of USA offers an Award Program for International Internships, supporting meritorious students across Bachelor's and Master's levels as well as various Departments/Schools/Centers each year. Awardees are chosen based on factors such as the quality of the host institution/company, the proposed research, and the academic standing of the applicant. The award ranges from USD 3000-5000 and is managed directly by IITKGPF. However, awardees may need to secure additional funding if necessary.

The final approval for the award is subject to completion of the internship and return to the Institute before the start of the Autumn Semester. It also includes the approvals from the faculty advisor and Head of Department (HoD). The application process involves waiting for the call, logging into the Foreign Training Portal, and providing the necessary details. IIT Kharagpur Foundation (IITKGPF) of USA: Award Program for Students Participation in International

IIT Kharagpur Foundation supports meritorious students across Bachelor's and Master's levels and various Departments/ Schools/ Centers each year to pursue high-quality international research and professional internships. Awardees are selected based on the quality of the host institution/company, the proposed research, and the applicant's academic standing. The award ranges from US Dollars 3000-5000 and is administered directly by IITKGPF, with awardees responsible for securing additional funding if necessary. Upon completing the internship and returning to the Institute before the Autumn Semester, obtaining approvals from faculty advisors and HoDs, and submitting approvals to the Office of International Relations, the IITKGPF scholarships are awarded.

Guru Krupa Foundation (GKF) USA

The GKF is a postgraduate Scholarship for International Students, under which they support meritorious self-funded international students of Postgraduate level across all disciplines in the form of awarding scholarships. They offer a scholarship amount worth INR 25,000 per month to cover tuition fees, hostel/accommodation charges, mess charges, and living expenses. The award is based on the academic excellence of the candidate and should not have any disciplinary action taken against him/her during a stay at IIT Kharagpur. The CGPA must be at least 8.5 with no backlog in any subject. The student is not a recipient of any financial support from the Institute or outside sponsor. Bonafide students who wish to avail of the scholarship should apply against the call released by the Office of International Relations by filling up the form. The call is released normally in January every year.

Shri Gopal Rajgarhia International Program

The objective of the SGRIP endowment fund, which was established primarily as a donation from Shri Gopal Rajgarhia (68/BTech/CH/NH), is to support different initiatives that would increase IIT Kharagpur's international participation. IIT Kharagpur aims to enhance its global standing and bring about major change by utilizing these initiatives, with a particular focus on supporting and facilitating overseas programs.

Australian National University Future Research Talent (FRT) Award: The FRT is a competitive and prestigious program attracting the most meritorious students from the best and top Indian institutions. The program allows India’s emerging research talent to form international connections and develop research skills at Australia’s best university. The FRT program provides selected Indian students with an opportunity to pursue a collaborative research project remotely or in the presence of supervisors from The Australian National University (ANU), for a period of 10-12 weeks, in a range of Science, Health and Medicine disciplines.

Warwick Manufacturing Group: WMG annually invites the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur to select a small number of students to attend a short course for 8 weeks (UG) and 11 weeks (PG) at the University of Warwick. Events take place either virtually or on-site. Participants will carry out an individual research project that is related to the degree course for which they are registered. Raman-Charpak Fellowship Programme: The Raman-Charpak Fellowship is a flagship program for Indo-French researcher's mobility implemented by the Indo-French Centre for Promotion of Advanced Research and is jointly funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India and the French Institute in India (IFI), French Embassy in India, Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Government of France. A few of my friends were Institute toppers and I asked them about their study method. Most of my topper friends study just 2 days before exams in the library and then teach their friends and clear their doubts.

Another topper friend solved all the previous year question papers of the subject and uploads the solutions on the Facebook group a day before the exam. She never missed any class, had great handwriting and prepared great notes.

So basically, toppers , prepare for the exams way before most of us even begin. They are kind, selfless and are ready to help anyone who is unable to cope up.

How easy is it to change branch in IIT Kharagpur?

The primary and most important thing is to be regular and give equal attention to all subjects. You have to focus on your studies only and not let any distractions take the better of you. Be firm on your goal and give up all time-wasting activities.

You need to be rightly motivated and determined to achieve these goals. Not losing hope is the key as one or two exams do not define you. You will get ample opportunities to prove yourself so just keep working hard.

My cousin scored below average in the middle of the 2nd semester. However, she got this sudden motivation and studied hard and was able to score an overall CGPA of 9.64. She studied consistently every day and was able to change her branch eventually.

Why is IIT Kharagpur Electrical Engineering department so deadly? How do they differ from others' IIT Electrical Department?

My brother had offers from IITs to choose any branch except CSE and chose Electrical Engineering in IIT KGP. To date, he does not regret his decision. There are ups and downs in every Institute; it just takes time to adapt yourself to such situations.

It is true that some professors overdo it and push you to the extreme, but if you look at this in a positive manner, it’s their pushing that eventually helps you succeed. There are many seniors who might make fun of your tiny efforts in the labs but trust me, today when they will look back, they will surely be regretting the time they wasted watching movies or series.

My brother told me that Electrical Engineering gave him so many friends and experiences that make him yearn for college life today. The labs are old-fashioned and lack much activity in contrast to a SigNet lab/ Power Systems lab.

Curriculum: The primary aim of the course curriculum offered in Electrical Engineering at IIT KGP is to impart to students tools and skills that will make it possible for them to excel in departments such as Electronics, Communication, Computers, Aerospace, and Energy.
Job prospects: An important point to note is that Electrical Engineering does not prepare you for a job but for higher education in the respective areas. Many people from the department pursue M.S. in Aerospace and Material Sciences.
Faculty: While many may not agree, the faculty is excellent except for a few. The cream faculty include Prof. D Das, Prof TKB, Prof S Patra, and Prof S Chattopadhyay among others. Interacting with them might change your opinion regarding the IIT KGP faculty.
Research: The research is obviously not at par with that conducted in CS or EC, but it surely does justice to the department itself.

I think it’s high time people clear misconceptions about Electrical Engineering and develop a positive opinion about it. We should stop running after jobs and companies and in turn let companies seek us.

Every person will have a different opinion on what advice work best for freshers. Instead of giving you a list of things to follow, I will suggest you just focus on 3 key points

Maintain your academics: The primary focus should be your academics and staying at the top of your class. Don’t let your CGP fall below 8 throughout your life at KGP.
Learn new things: This does not include just DC++, Counter-Strike, or FIFA. Explore new things such as workshops, society interviews, and sports, or take part in different inter-halls.
Make friends: Surviving in an IIT can be much easier with the right set of friends. To interact with your hostel buddies and make new friends that will stay with you for the rest of your life.

Overall, you need a highly positive mindset before joining IIT. You need to be passionate about things and be ready to work hard and achieve them.

While this certainly is a crucial issue, it can be addressed so you don’t have to worry too much and demotivate yourself. Here are 3 simple ways to overcome this problem

Academics: Before anything comes academics. So the first thing you should do to come out of such an issue is to improve your CGPA. This isn’t that difficult since one can easily score well by just studying 1-2 weeks prior to exams in IITs. Attend all classes and find the subject that is your strength and work on it.
Focus on skills not resume: Shift the focus from building a sound resume to inculcating sound skills. For instance, the dramatics society will add to your speaking skills and confidence. The same can be achieved by just interacting more with people and attending inter-halls. One does not have to build their resume but their skill only. Hosting your department festival will provide you with managerial skills. So work on such activities and don’t run after societies.
Take things lightly: Like Steve Jobs once said, “The best resumes never change the world.”, he literally proved it. Neither did he have a good GPA nor was he part of a good society, yet today he is among the richest and most successful people on Earth. Not being a part of society can be taken positively. One has a lot of free time on his hands and can invest the same in interesting things and learn new things.

So the key is to work on your academics, develop skills and take it easy.

Although IIT BHU and IIT Roorkee became IITs later, there are very old institutes. Both BHU and Roorkee have immense respect in the academic world, all across the globe. But these two aren’t considered among the top 5 IITs when it comes to international reputation and career opportunities.

IIT Guwahati was established quite recently. But it has made an immense stride in this limited time period. The only downside for the institute is the limited alumni network and industry recognition.

ROI: IIT KGP MBA fees are around 9 Lakhs and are lesser in comparison to top B Schools. Therefore the ROI is also higher.

Infrastructure: IIT Kharagpur boasts top-notch infrastructure, with excellent amenities like sports facilities, a gymnasium, a big library, and a huge campus.

Industry relevance: Most professors conduct research/ consulting work for corporations, so you can get their help during live projects or Internship hunting.

I wouldn’t say that securing an above 9.0 CGPA at IIT Kharagpur is very tough. With the right motivation, even an average student can get a 9+ CGPA. When it comes to grading, IIT KGP has two methods

Relative Grading: Under this, professors are required to give a 9+ CGPA to 25% of the batch which comprises roughly 100 students. Now it’s up to the professor to decide who is worthy of such high grades. While some professors give a 10 CGPA to only the deserving students, many professors casually grade the students without much thought.
Absolute Grading: This is a rather rigid grading system wherein grading is done on the basis of cumulative marks. Students scoring 90–100 get a 10 while those 80–90 get a 9 and so on. The upper and lower limits are not fixed and the cutoff is decided by the professor itself. This grading system is usually followed in the Maths Department.

So we can conclude that getting a 9+ CGPA becomes a lot easier if you have no other distractions such as research or social work and you have been attending classes regularly.

Lastly, I would like to say that CGPA is not the only deciding factor. There are many students with a decent CGPA of 8+ who have made decent accomplishments and done high-level research or wonders in startups. The main agenda is to gain maximum exposure and then plan your future.

IIT Kharagpur MTech program is offered at the PG in 50 different specialisations. The institute accepts GATE scores to allow admission to this program. Also, candidates are required to register themselves for the COAP counselling for the seat allocation process. You must have done Bachelor's Degree in Engineering/ Technology/ Architecture/ M.Sc or equivalent professional degrees (AMIE etc.) with minimum aggregate marks of 60%. GATE qualified need to apply via COAP; Self-sponsored candidates need to apply via an online application form released on the official website.

As per the analysis of the previous year's cutoff, you may not get the IIT Kharagpur with the 300 scores, however, you can get admission into the DTU(Information system, Geoinformatics, etc.), IIT Ropra(Chemical Engineering), IIT Jodhpur(Research), IISc(instrumentation). Candidates applying for the IIT Kharagpur MTech program must appear for the GATE examination followed by COAP counselling. Candidates acquiring the set cutoff scores will be eligible to participate in the counseling session. Once the candidate gets into IIT Kharagpur through counseling, the institute then conducts interview rounds for the final selections. Weightage in the IIT Kharagpur MTech selection process is 70% (GATE score) and 30% (Interview) round.
