IIT Kanpur (IITK): Admission 2024, Cutoff, Courses, Fees, Placement, Ranking

Both IIT Delhi and IIT Kanpur are renowned institutions in India, well known for their academic curriculums and research programs. IIT Kanpur holds the 4th rank in NIRF Engineering 2023 ranking. Both IIT Delhi and IIT Kanpur offer a variety of graduate, undergraduate, and doctorate programs to students.

However, choosing the right IIT depends on your personal preference. Here is a list of fees and eligibility criteria for getting admission to IIT Kanpur.

IIT Kanpur is known for providing some of the highest packages in the industry to its students.

• This is mainly because of the institution’s vast industry connection as only the best companies visit the institute to recruit students.
• Electrical and electronics engineers are highly valued by the industry.
• The course curriculum at IIT Kanpur has also been designed to make the students industry-ready.
• The average package offered to electrical and electronics engineers from IIT Kanpur is around 10 LPA to 15 LPA.
• The highest package offered in 2023 stood at 40 LPA. There have also been instances of students getting high packages of around 63 LPA.

All the 3 IITs, IIT Kanpur, IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi, follow the relative grading. Under this, your grades are calculated after your GPA is generated with respect to the highest scorer's marks. This system is quite similar to that in the US except that the parameters considered while calculating grades are way different.

Grades are calculated by giving weightage to such parameters 

• Tests
• Assignments
• Projects
• Quizzes
• Group projects
• Class participation

IIT Kanpur has an even grading system which looks like this 

Contrastingly, AP in IIT Bombay means excellent performance where AP in IIT Kanpur means Academic Probation. But still, I think IIT Kanpur is good to go with.

The general preference order is 

• College wise - IIT Bombay > IIT Kanpur > IIT Roorkee
• Branch wise - CS > Mechanical ~ Electrical.

However, this is a popular trend, and you don't have to follow it. It is best to make a decision based on your individual preferences.

Doing something that interests you is considerably superior in the long run to doing something you dislike solely for money since, after a few years, money no longer motivates you.

Here are some information to make your decision easier:-

• The placement scenario for EE in IIT Kanpur is good and stands next to the CS department in the table.
• Though EE is the largest department when compared with others it still maintains its record well in placements.
• The NIRF Ranking of IIT Bombay is 3, IIT Kanpur is 4 and IIT Roorkee is 5.
• The Average placement at IIT Bombay Mechanical is 21.82 LPA with IIT Kanpur Electrical is 26.27 LPA and IIT Roorkee CSE is 22 LPA.
• More than 250 companies visited IIT Kanpur campus in 2023.
• EE offers specialisations like VLSI, SPCom, RF & Microwave, Power Engineering, Control & Automation. Placements for some of these specializations are 100 %, especially for VLSI, SPCom & RF.

Keeping aside the public’s opinion, my preference order is

 IIT Kanpur Electrical > IIT Roorkee CS > IIT Bombay Mechanical 

First of all you need to lose this ideology that ECE has more scope and mechanical or aerospace engineering has less scope. Every field has top notch research going in it and provides dynamic and challenging work opportunities. 

I also had the same dilemma and I chose Aerospace engineering at IIT Madras over other departments due to following reasons:-

• IIT Madras has state of the art facilities that focus on practical and industry oriented knowledge.
• The syllabus of Aerospace follows the latest curriculum and incorporates the latest industry trends such as Structures, Aerodynamics, Propulsion, Controls, and System Design.
• IIT Madras is in the heart of the city with a lot of entertainment hubs nearby.
• IIT Kanpur has a NIRF ranking of 4th with IIT Madras at 1st and IIT BHU at 15th.
• The Average salary for IIT BHU Mechanical and ECE is 12.5 LPA and 22.85 LPA.
• The Average package for IIT Madras Aerospace Engineering is 21 LPA.
• The Average package for IIT Kanpur Aerospace Engineering is 20 LPA.

Both IIT Kanpur and IIT Madras are esteemed institutes in India. Choosing the correct IIT depends on your preference and also the course that you want to pursue.

• In 2023, IIT Kanpur ranked 4th in the Engineering category under the NIRF Ranking.
• IIT Kanpur offers a broad variety of courses which include undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctorate programs.
• IIT Kanpur also holds good placement records. Most of the students who register for placements get placed at top companies.
• In 2023, the highest package was INR1.9 CPA.
• Students also received 74 PPOs and 74 international offers. Phase 1 of the placement season in 2024 has also shown bright prospects.
• A total of 22 international offers were made with an average package of around INR 26.27 LPA.
• The top recruiters were Texas Instruments, Goldman Sachs, Samsung, Reliance, Qualcomm, Reliance, etc.
