My brother had offers from IITs to choose any branch except CSE and chose Electrical Engineering in IIT KGP. To date, he does not regret his decision. There are ups and downs in every Institute; it just takes time to adapt yourself to such situations. It is true that some professors overdo it and push you to the extreme, but if you look at this in a positive manner, it’s their pushing that eventually helps you succeed. There are many seniors who might make fun of your tiny efforts in the labs but trust me, today when they will look back, they will surely be regretting the time they wasted watching movies or series. My brother told me that Electrical Engineering gave him so many friends and experiences that make him yearn for college life today. The labs are old-fashioned and lack much activity in contrast to a SigNet lab/ Power Systems lab. Curriculum: The primary aim of the course curriculum offered in Electrical Engineering at IIT KGP is to impart to students tools and skills that will make it possible for them to excel in departments such as Electronics, Communication, Computers, Aerospace, and Energy. Job prospects: An important point to note is that Electrical Engineering does not prepare you for a job but for higher education in the respective areas. Many people from the department pursue M.S. in Aerospace and Material Sciences. Faculty: While many may not agree, the faculty is excellent except for a few. The cream faculty include Prof. D Das, Prof TKB, Prof S Patra, and Prof S Chattopadhyay among others. Interacting with them might change your opinion regarding the IIT KGP faculty. Research: The research is obviously not at par with that conducted in CS or EC, but it surely does justice to the department itself. The fees for a semester is approximately 1.56lakh. This consists of a tution fee of 1 lakh and all other hostel, mess, exam, lab fee combinedly totald other 56000/- . This fee is approximately same for all the branches. The total fee per year will be approximately 3 lakhs including every aspect. SCHOLARSHIP: If none of your parents works in givernment sector and your parenta total yealy income lies less than one lakh rupees, tgen you will get a scholarship amount of 1 lakh rupees for your tution fee into your college account every semester. If your income lies between 1 lakh to 3 lakhs, tgen you need to pay 33000 from tge tution fees and tge remaininv amoung will be given by government. You will get a scholarship of 66000 per semester. If you annual income lies between 3 to 5 laks, you will get 33000 scholarship per semester from the government.

If i break down the overall fee stucture then we pay a tution fee for INR 100000 and around 14000 as mess charges and 32000 for Hostels in every semester. Institute provides tution fee wavier for SC/ST and students with less income. institute also provides financial suppport through various scholarship.

IIT KGP is the onlh college that has these many branches. Jharkhand anr Orissa are mining states of India and therefore strategically too IIT Kgp becomes an out and out choice. The feed is 3.5 lakhs a year and even the lower caste students gets just 20% scholarships. Merit and sports based scholarships are also there and that again is something which is something not meant for average students like me.

The total fee for first year is 273500 Rupees.For the first sem fee is 126750 Rupees and 146750 for the second. In each semester 100000 Rupees is tution fee and the remaining for others like regestration, lab, exam, books. I am currently not aware of 2nd, 3rd, and 4th year fee as I am a first year student. My brother had offers from IITs to choose any branch except CSE and chose Electrical Engineering in IIT KGP. To date, he does not regret his decision. There are ups and downs in every Institute; it just takes time to adapt yourself to such situations.

It is true that some professors overdo it and push you to the extreme, but if you look at this in a positive manner, it’s their pushing that eventually helps you succeed. There are many seniors who might make fun of your tiny efforts in the labs but trust me, today when they will look back, they will surely be regretting the time they wasted watching movies or series.

My brother told me that Electrical Engineering gave him so many friends and experiences that make him yearn for college life today. The labs are old-fashioned and lack much activity in contrast to a SigNet lab/ Power Systems lab.

Curriculum: The primary aim of the course curriculum offered in Electrical Engineering at IIT KGP is to impart to students tools and skills that will make it possible for them to excel in departments such as Electronics, Communication, Computers, Aerospace, and Energy.
Job prospects: An important point to note is that Electrical Engineering does not prepare you for a job but for higher education in the respective areas. Many people from the department pursue M.S. in Aerospace and Material Sciences.
Faculty: While many may not agree, the faculty is excellent except for a few. The cream faculty include Prof. D Das, Prof TKB, Prof S Patra, and Prof S Chattopadhyay among others. Interacting with them might change your opinion regarding the IIT KGP faculty.
Research: The research is obviously not at par with that conducted in CS or EC, but it surely does justice to the department itself.

I think it’s high time people clear misconceptions about Electrical Engineering and develop a positive opinion about it. We should stop running after jobs and companies and in turn let companies seek us.

The Economics branch is slowly becoming one of the best branches of IIT Kharagpur. Integrated M.Sc. (5 years) in Economics opens with JEE rank 3615 and closes at 5439 as per JoSAA 2022. However, it’s not necessary to evaluate a course on the basis of its opening and closing rank because you can get your branch changed on the basis of your performance in the first year.

A student has to obtain around 8.73 CGPA in order to get their branch changed to Economics. You will have to work very hard to get a high CGPA for branch change.
