The curriculum in our college along with most other engineering colleges in the country is a bit primitive in nature and outdated in terms of immediate industry relevance just after getting out of college. But they fulfill the purpose of creating a holistic student who can dive deeper into any field he wants to. We have two exams for semester 1 mid-semester and one and the semester. The mid-semester consists of 30 marks and the end-semester of 50 marks with 20 marks at the discretion of the professors for either attendance or internal matters. Most of our professors follow a slideshow-based teaching approach where they walk into the class and simply teach from slides which I think is not very effective. The curriculum prepares the student well enough in order to autodidact in any field.

The course curriculum for chemcial engineering at IIT kharaagpur is good. Courses are similar to most government engineering colleges in India but facilities and faculties are the best here in IITs. Most faculties are highly experienced and research oriented in their field. Overall curriculum is very good here.

I got chemical engineering dual in IIT Kharagpur. I chose this branch after getting views from seniors about the advantages of the same. There are ample number of faculty always ready to help students . Exams are frequent and the difficulty is decent, but its easy to get through if you are well versed with the topics.

I chose this course as this was the best course I was getting according to the last year cut-offs. For theory classes, two sections each of 90 capacity are taught by a one professor. Tutorial classes are taken by Teaching Assistans who are M.Tech or PhD students and the ratio is 1:45 in tutorial classes. In Laboratories, the ratio is far better, which is 1:10. Theory classes are taken by Professors who are PhD holders with many years of teaching experience and sometimes have many research publications in their name. Term exams were conducted timely and for a candidate who has cracked highly competitive exams like JEE Main and Advanced, the exams are fairly moderate. If one studies atleast 2 hours daily with dedication then he can easily pass the exams with good grades. Also some courses follow continous grading system during the entire semester so each classes' performance counts in such courses.

Faculty is very well experienced. They really teach us nicely. Sem exams are also really tough, and only the students who listen to classes attentively can answer the questions. And the evaluation is also very strict.
Choosing Chemical Engineering at IIT Kharagpur is a better option as compared to CS at IIT Mandi. IIT KGP is a much older institution with a rich legacy and a stronger alumni network. Other than that, Chemical Engineering at IIT Kharagpur has an active research culture.
On the other hand, IIT Mandi may not be the best option because of its recent establishment. Although the IIT Mandi placements seem promising, they are nowhere near IIT KGP placements.
Here is a general comparison of the 2 institutes based on several factors-
Particulars | IIT Mandi | IIT KGP |
---|---|---|
B.Tech Fees | 2.85 Lakhs (1st Year Fees) | 2.24 Lakhs (1st Year Fees) |
NIRF Ranking 2023 (Engineering) | 73 | 6 |
Highest CTC (2023) | INR 60 LPA | INR 2.68 CPA |
Average CTC (2023) | INR 21.50 LPA | INR 50 LPA |
Top Recruiters | Flipkart, 1mg, Microsoft, Uber, Amazon | Microsoft, Google, EXL Services |
Based on these factors, I would suggest you choose Chemical Engineering at IIT KGP over CS at IIT Mandi.
