Ques. What are the various categories cutoff for the BTech CSE program?
Ans. Given below are the various categories cutoff for the BTech CSE program at NIT Rourkela:
Courses | General | General PwD | SC | ST | OBC-NCL | OBC-NCL PwD | EWS |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
BTech Computer Science Engineering | 3369 | 8 | 490 | 131 | 1037 | 37 | 432 |
Ques. Can I secure a seat in both JoSAA and CSAB in NIT Rourkela?
Ans. No, if the candidate is allotted a new seat in the CSAB counselling then the seats that he/she had reserved in the previous JoSAA rounds will automatically get cancelled. A candidate cannot get both seats from JoSAA and CSAB Special Rounds. If he/she already accepted the seat and paid the fees for CSAB, they will have to accept it and cannot switch to JoSAA. Thus, the applicant must carefully review their preferences if they're interested in a different seat than JoSAA. The JoSAA seats cancellation ensures that students who are no longer interested don't block seats for other candidates and makes a more efficient allocation process. Since, the CSAB round takes place after the JoSAA round, it would be more difficult to organise a scenario where students can hold seats in both rounds.
Ques. What is the difference between JEE Mains rank and percentile?
Ans. JEE Main Rank is the absolute position where the candidate with the highest score gets Rank 1 and is a direct competition for a specific ranking. However, the JEE Main Percentile is the percentage of students who scored equal to or lower than other candidates in the exam. The major difference is that it indicates how well a candidate performed relative to the competition which means higher rank is better and percentile compared to the overall performance which means higher percentile is better. For predicting admission chances in competitive colleges lower rank is generally preferred. Given below is the percentile, marks, and rank table:
Percentile | Marks | Rank |
---|---|---|
99 | 236-151 | 10581-11750 |
98.5 | 223-139 | 11751-17477 |

Ques. Why should I check the year wise cutoff for the BTech cutoff?
Ans. The cutoff scores vary every year and by comparing cutoffs from previous years, the trends can be identified. The difficulty level of the JEE Main exam can vary slightly from year to year and comparing cutoffs helps you adjust for this variation. The number of candidate's and the overall performance of the test-takers can also influence cutoffs and can help estimate the level of competition. By analysing past cutoff trends, the candidate can develop a more effective preparation strategy. The JEE Main opening ranks for BTech Computer Science Engineering at NIT Rourkela have been steadily decreasing over the past four years. This might be due to an increase in the number of seats available or a slight decrease in the overall difficulty level of the exam. Thus, it is important to consider the four-year trend which can still be helpful.

To get admission in NIT/IIT you have to go through JEE MAINS/ADVANCE exam. After securing a rank in these exam you have to apply for JOSAA Councelling through which you will be allotted a college and a department as per your preference and rank. You can get admission through your jee mains rank. Josaa provides a platform through which you can get admission in any nit/ iit. Based on yearly cut- off of your respective branches, you will get the required seat. You just need to fill your priority list by seeing the previous year cut- off. The cut- off hardly varies. So, there are high chances of you getting your desired branch if you have filled according to the previous year cut - off. Then you can directly come to the campus berify your documents and you will be admitted. It's quite simple process.

Here is what the institute has officially declared regarding branch change:
All B. Tech, Int. MSc and BTech- MTech dual degree students who have secured a GPA of 8.5 or more (without any backlog) at the end of the first year are eligible for a branch change given they fulfill the following criteria
Additionally, students may also be required to participate in an interview or other selection process.
One of my cousins is currently studying at NIT Rourkela and shared a few worrisome things about the institute that affected her learning experience
However, the above-mentioned points aren’t very crucial and don’t affect the learning process directly. So it’s better to overlook them and focus on the bright side of the institute.
Campus life at NIT Rourkela is one of the best you can experience in India. The infrastructure is amazing and the college spreads across a whopping 1200 acres.
In addition to all the fun activities, you will have to maintain a good CGPA for better placements.
I am well aware of the situation of NIT Rourkela Integrated MSc in Physics since my sister is a student there. She shared her horrible experience and does not recommend it to anyone at all.
My sister regrets wasting 5 precious years on this course and advises everyone to refrain from joining it.
I don't think there is a single useless branch at NIT Rourkela or at any institute. The diverse branches aim at catering to the needs of all kinds of students. So a branch that is useless for you might be useful for someone else and vice versa. Moreover, if a branch seems to be useless then it's because its students are not passionate enough to make the most out of it. Comparing branches can also result in this preconceived notion of a rank being inferior to the other.
It's always better to find solutions than to complain. Rather than declaring a specific branch to be useless, we should identify its weaknesses and work on them for instance, one of my friends found his branch to be below average and he along with his batchmates used to sit and single out companies that could hire them they even talked to the professors regarding the changes that coil be made in the curriculum to make the course more appealing and informative.
I believe once you start focusing on gaining knowledge rather than earning money, you won't find a single branch useless. Yes, a branch can provide lesser job opportunities than other branches but that does not make it useless.
Currently, NIT Rourkela is ranked as the 3rd best NIT after NIT Trichy and NIT Karnataka as per the MHRD rankings 2023. Now, before determining if NIT Rourkela is worth being ranked so highly, we need to know what criteria make up an MHRD ranking
So yes, NIT Rourkela very much deserves the high ranking it gets considering its excellent infrastructure, curriculum, and research opportunities.
One of my friends recently completed Biotechnology at NIT Rourkela and shared his experience of the same.
Overall, the branch should be considered unless you are specifically inclined towards it and have no expectations of high packages.
My brother is pursuing his B.Tech Electrical from NIT Rourkela. Sometimes he feels that he made a mistake by choosing Electrical over CSE because of the popularity of the latter.
However, he soon overcomes these thoughts. This is because Electrical has a really good scope on a global scale. Even if he doesn’t land a dream job through placements, the option of higher studies is always open for him. The curriculum of Electrical includes topics from allied branches- ECE and CSE. Unlike the popular belief among NIT Rourkela students, Electrical is not just about electrical machines and power systems. Microprocessors, Embedded Systems, Signal Processing, Communication Engineering, Measurements and Instrumentation are all included in the Electrical curriculum.
B.Tech Electrical has a very interdisciplinary nature wherein you will not learn about one specific arena, but, the curriculum will allow you to understand what really interests you. You can then pursue your higher studies in your field of interest. B.Tech Electrical is so flexible that it allows you to migrate to almost any other engineering field that you want.
I would highly recommend B.Tech Electrical if you have a passionate interest in Maths and Physics. Also, a PG in this branch will allow you to truly understand its nuances and become a specialist in this field. Thus, Electrical is the best department at NIT Rourkela according to me.
NIT Rourkela's newly launched branch Food Processing has a wide scope for development and research and its worth cannot simply be judged through its placements. It caters to the ones interested in the production and processing of food and maintaining its quality.
The branch covers all arenas of food marketing from developing food and machines to keeping the food safe. It comprises concepts from various other branches too like mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, and Food Science and Engineering.
As there is growth and development in India with respect to Food and Beverage Processing, there has opened up a gate for great research and job opportunities, as well, in the near future or I would say it has already started.
I asked a friend about the placement scenario of the branch and he told me that around 80-85% of students are placed. The highest salary package offered is 17 LPA. Most of the students receive internship opportunities while some prefer going to top foreign universities to pursue higher studies or research.
Some of the core companies visiting the campus for placement are Milk Mantra, IDMC, Tetra Pak, etc. Some of the non-core companies visiting the campus for placement are ZS Associates, TCS, EXL Services, Tredence, Affine Analytics, etc.
Other programs that students of this branch end up going to include Management programs in IIM-A, XIMB, NIBM, BITS Pilani, and direct Ph.D. in foreign universities. Some even go for M.Tech Program in NIFTEM.
So, the B.Tech program in Food Process Engineering is a great choice for interested students considering its increasing demand and scope.
