CUET PG Statistics Question Paper Analysis (2024 vs 2023)

The CUET PG 2023 exam was more formula-based and theoretical, focusing on direct concepts and definitions. However, the CUET PG 2024 exam shifted towards application-based questions, requiring students to apply statistical concepts in real-world scenarios.

CUET PG 2023 vs. CUET PG 2024: Topic-Wise Comparison

Topic Category CUET PG 2023 Focus CUET PG 2024 Focus
Sequences & Series Direct questions on convergence, ratio test Application-based questions on convergence
Differential Calculus Definitions & theorems (Taylor, Mean Value) Case-based problems requiring differentiation
Integral Calculus Finding integrals directly Applied problems on area & volume
Matrices Basic properties & definitions Application in eigenvalues & transformations
Probability & Statistics Formula-based probability questions Case-based probability applications
Distributions Standard distributions & their properties Real-world applications of normal & Poisson
Hypothesis Testing Conceptual definitions of tests Application-based testing scenarios
Sampling & Design of Experiments Definitions & standard methods Applied problems on ANOVA, RBD, Factorial Exp.

More Focus on Real-Life Situations

First, there was a big shift towards real-life situations. In 2023, the exam primarily checked whether students had memorized formulas and definitions. But in 2024, it required students to apply statistics to real problems.

For example, rather than simply asking about probability formulas, it asked them to determine the most appropriate probability distribution for actual data.It also required them to apply what they had learned to real-world problems, such as interpreting quality control using confidence intervals or understanding economic linkages through regression. Essentially, it required students to demonstrate that they could apply what they had studied.

Less Theory, More Practice

In 2023, most questions were about recalling the formulas directly. But in 2024, there were more real-world problems that required logical thinking. Instead of asking, "What is the variance of a binomial distribution?", The question was rephrased to ask, "In a manufacturing firm, assuming defective products have a binomial distribution, what is the probability of getting at most two defective products out of ten?"

Such a question combined the formula with a real-scenario context. Similarly, the hypothesis test problems and the problems on regression were framed within practical contexts like factories or business challenges. Therefore, students had to apply concepts instead of memorizing them.

More Questions on Modern Statistical Methods

Finally, there were more questions on modern statistical techniques. While the 2023 paper included more traditional concepts like probability and hypothesis testing, 2024 covered more advanced and modern topics like data science, machine learning, and Bayesian statistics. In particular, Bayesian inference, data science applications, time series analysis, and machine learning basics were asked.

Thus, the students had to study topics such as updating probabilities using previous data, analyzing big data, detecting time series trends, and gaining knowledge of basic machine learning models. Hence, they should have been concentrating on studying these new statistical techniques, as they had become an important part of the exam.
