After graduation from Jabalpur University, I had two options: 1) to try and get selected to BARC Graduate training engineer (first choice) or 2) Get admitted to a Postgraduate course in Electrical Engineering at IIT B. IIT had the process of entrance examination followed by an interview. Unfortunately, the date and timing of both the BARC interview and IIT test were on the same day same time. Went to BARC as it was the first choice. After the BARC interview visited IIT but the entrance tests and interviews were already completed. Contacted the head of the electrical engineering department (Late Prof C Balakrishnan), who was kind enough to give the test and called me on the following day for an interview. Got selected and joined the program on schedule in July 1967.

Our college has an elaborate entrance exam called IIT-JEE which is a countrywide exam and the score makes you eligible for all the IITs. The exam is of two stages, one around the first week of April and another on the last week of May. The entrance exam is pretty elaborate and hence people undergo preparation in their classes 11 and 12 in multiple coaching centres across the country. The exam is primarily on 3 subjects: Maths, Physics, and Chemistry. It's highly recommended that people only choose this college entrance if they are already good at it because the actual exam paper is world-renowned to be the toughest of all. Choosing a branch and college are highly biased on the rank you get in the exam.

Good placements after college are also one of the reasons for selecting IITs. IIT Bombay is considered to be the best of them, especially for Computer Science and Technology.
It's the best engineering college in India and has been my dream college ever since I came to know more about it. The college is full of activities and the on campus education experience is really good.
