For M.Sc. Chemistry at ICT Mumbai, I had to appear for an entrance test. The questions were ranging from medium to tough and required lengthy calculations. The application fee was Rs. 1000. After admission, students were asked to choose whether they want to pursue a Ph.D. or sit for placements. The institute offers a year-long research project besides the normal courses. The professors are highly learned and always ready to help out any enthusiastic student.

ICT Mumbai: 2 Answered Questions

Which branch has a better scope; foods, dyes, oils, surface coating, polymers, fibres? If the candidate studies in ICT Mumbai.?

Sahil Sachdeva
Ravi BatraStudied at Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai

If you are interested in specialized branches i,e; Food, Dyes, Oils, Surface coating, Polymers, and Fibers at ICT(Institute of Chemical Technology) Mumbai, then you should not worry about the scope. There is enough scope for all branches and one should also know that the number of seats in each and every branch is limited. Below stated are some points that may help you in choosing any of these branches

Eligibility:

  • For a Bachelor's degree, one must pass 10+2 with a minimum of 60% from a recognized board or Institute recognized by the UGC/ AICTE. JEE Mains scores are considered for BTech admission.

  • For specialized courses under the M. Tech course, for which the eligibility criteria is to fulfill a B. Tech degree with 60% marks. A further selection is done based on GATE /GPAT score.

Fee Structure:

  • For the 4years course (B. Tech) in any of the specialized courses, the fee structure is estimated to be 3.41 Lakhs with rupees 85,350 as the first-year tuition fee.

  • For the 2years course (M. Tech) in any of the specialized courses, the fee structure is estimated to be 1.42 Lakhs with rupees 70,750 as the first-year tuition fee.

Placement Records:

Food:

  • As per the recent stats, the highest package offered is 9 LPA and the average package is 1.2 LPA.

  • Companies that visit for food technology are General Mills, PepsiCo, Kraft Heinz, and some B2B companies like VKL, PD Navkar, etc.

Dyes:

  • The Average package was noted to be 4.8 Lakhs.

  • Companies like Asian Paints, Black & Veatch, Cipla, DSM SOFT, Galaxy Surfactants, Jacobs, and Nerolac, etc visit the campus.

Oils:

  • 90% of students got placed in top companies.

  • The Highest package was 6 LPA and the average was between 3-4 LPA.

Surface coating:

  • The Average package was noted to be 4.8 Lakhs.

  • Companies like Asian Paints, Cipla, DSM SOFT, Galaxy Surfactants, Jacobs, and Nerolac, etc visit the campus.

Polymers:

  • The average package was noted to be between 2.5 to 3 Lakhs.

  • Not many companies visit the campus and therefore students opt for off-campus placement.

Fibers:

  • Companies like Sterlite Technologies Limited, Himachal Futuristic Communications Ltd., etc visit the campus.

  • The majority of students opt for Higher studies and there are no such placement stats present.

These are the career opportunities offered for the branches. However, you should choose the course you are more passionate about.

Why is ICT, Mumbai not converted to IIEST whereas other colleges like CUSAT are?

Uzma ZarinStudied at Cochin University of Science and Technology (2019)

CUSAT has yet to receive an IIEST upgrade. The work is still on, and funds have been allocated to strengthen the infrastructure in the next few years. Being an ex-student of the college, I'm not sure when it'll be upgraded.

  • Many people at the college, as far as I know, do not want it to be upgraded to an IIEST.
  • There's a lot of politics involved there.
  • Also not sure why certain people at the institute don't want to take advantage of it because being an IIEST has a lot of advantages.

To answer your question, despite being an excellent college, the Ananda Krishnan committee has not recommended ICT Mumbai for conversion to an IIEST. Let me give you a list of potential causes:

  • It is a modest institute in terms of campus size (16 acres), however, there is a need for more space for future expansion.
  • This is one of IIEST's requirements (a lot of space for further improvement of infrastructure and expansion).
  • Standard engineering courses such as CSE, Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, Metallurgy, and Mining are not offered.
  • The institute is known for Chemical Engineering.

The institute offers Bachelor’s degrees in B. Pharma, Food Engineering and Technology, Chemical Engineering, Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technology, Polymer Engineering and Technology, Surface Coating Technology, Oils, Oleochemicals and Surfactants Technology, etc.
