What is a good score in IIT JAM?

A good score in IIT JAM 2025 depends on the subject, competition, and category-wise cut-offs. Generally, a score above 70+ marks is considered strong for admission into IITs.

  • A score of 75+ marks is likely to be a better prospect for getting into core MSc programs at top IITs, whereas scores below that might limit options to interdisciplinary or self-sponsored programs.
  • As compared to other subjects, competition in Mathematics and Physics is higher; therefore, the threshold for good scores in those subjects is much higher than for subjects like Biotechnology or Geology.
  • Reservation categories (OBC-NCL, SC/ST, PwD) have less cut-off values, so 50-60 marks are also enough for IIT admission for candidates under reserved categories.
Marks Range (Out of 100) Good Score Category Possible Institute
85+ Excellent Score IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur
75 – 85 Very Good Score IIT Madras, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Roorkee
65 – 75 Good Score IIT Guwahati, IIT BHU, IIT Hyderabad
55 – 65 Decent Score IIT Indore, IIT Gandhinagar, NITs
45 – 55 Average Score IIITs, IISERs, Other Institutes
Below 45 Low Score State Universities, Private Institutes

IIT JAM 2025: Tie-Breaking Criteria

If the marks obtained by two or more candidates are the same in IIT JAM 2025, then tie-breaking criteria shall be applied to declare their ranks. This will ensure that each candidate gets a unique rank for admissions. The process for tie-breaking is as follows:

  • Preference to Higher Marks in the Subject: A candidate with a higher mark in the core subject of the examination will be given preference.
  • If the tie still exists, marks from the General Ability section will be considered. In this case, the better rank will be the one with more marks.
  • Age Criterion: If there is still a tie, the older person will be placed at a higher rank.

Example of IIT JAM 2025 Tie-Breaking Process

Through the example of 3 candidates, Amit, Rahul, and Neha we have explained the tie-breaking criteria of IIT JAM 2025.

Candidate Total Marks (Out of 100) Subject Marks General Ability Marks Age (Date of Birth) Final Rank
Amit 75 60 15 12 Aug 2000 2
Rahul 75 58 17 20 June 2001 3
Neha 75 60 15 05 Jan 2000 1
  • Marks obtained in subjects: Candidates scoring more marks in subjects are ranked at higher ranks. Neha and Amit have scored 60 while Rahul has 58, therefore, a lower ranking.
  • General Ability Marks Consideration: Neha and Amit share the same 15 marks in General Ability, so the tie is still unbroken.
  • Age-Based Ranking: Neha is more mature (born 05 Jan 2000) than Amit, who was born 12 August 2000. Therefore, she enjoys a higher ranking.
  • Final Ranking Outcome: Neha at Rank 1, Amit at Rank 2, and Rahul ranked at Rank 3 since Rahul has subject-wise marks lower than both others.
