The Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee is set to host the GATE 2025. The syllabus has been released on the official website of gate2025@iitr.ac.in. The syllabus for GG is based on three different sections, Engineering Mathematics, General Aptitude and Core GG subjects. The question paper includes a total of 65 questions, out of which approximately 45 questions are from the syllabus of GG core subject.

Admission to reputed institutes like IITs for ME/M.Tech and PhD degrees is carried out via this exam every year. Also, several big industries that focus on core skills, consider scores for recruitment. A thorough understanding and practice of the syllabus is important for candidates to be informed about the topic-wise marks weightage.

Important Tips By Toppers

Here are some tips suggested by Exam Toppers over the years.

  • Thoroughly understand the GG Syllabus and study the topics that hold the most importance to begin the preparation.
  • Divide the syllabus into multiple segments, based on difficulty and size of topics. And study accordingly.
  • The syllabus incurs minor changes every year. Make sure to be aware of that, and plan accordingly
  • Make sure to study question papers to get an idea regarding the structure of the paper and the fixed time duration while solving the exam paper.
  • GG Mock tests are very handy in order to manage time and solving. Make a daily or weekly habit of solving them.
  • Referring to GG Books are a must. They provide insightful knowledge, and understanding of the complicated topics of the syllabus.
  • Solve and analyse GG previous year's question papers. This will help in holding the approach that is used to set up the paper, and also in identifying the topics that are repetitively appearing over the years.

Total Weightage In GATE GG 2025

The Geology and Geophysics Paper is divided into two parts - A and B.

  • Part A is mandatory, while Part B comprises two sections – Geology (Section I) and Geophysics (Section II). It will be up to the candidates which section they want to opt for.
  • Part A contains 25 questions carrying 1 mark each. Numerical answer-type questions will also be present in this section.
  • Part B (Sections I and II) contains 30 questions carrying 2 marks each.
  • 1 mark is allotted for a correct answer of 1 mark question and 1/3 mark is deducted for an incorrect answer.
  • 2 marks are allotted for a correct answer to 2 mark questions and 2/3 mark is deducted for an incorrect answer.

Ques. What is the GATE GG Marking scheme?

Ans. Geology and Geophysics consists of two sections - General Aptitude with 15 weightage, and GG questions with 85 Weightage.
