What is GATE Exam Pattern 2024?
As per GATE Exam Pattern 2024, the exam is conducted online for 3 hours. GATE Question Paper includes 65 questions mainly divided into the General Aptitude section and Core Discipline. The General Aptitude section in GATE exam carries a weightage of 15 marks while the remaining 85 marks are for the Core Discipline and related topics. - A new Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (DA) paper has been added to GATE 2024. GATE DA paper will be divided into 2 sections, General Aptitude (15 marks) and Subject Paper (85 marks).
As per GATE Exam Pattern 2025, there are three types of questions asked in GATE Question Paper. These include Multiple Choice Questions(MCQs), Multiple Select Questions (MSQs) and Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions. Each of these questions carries 1 or 2 marks each for a total weightage of 100 marks.

Ques. What is GATE exam pattern?
Ans. As per GATE exam pattern, there are 65 compulsory questions that are to be answered in 180 minutes. 10 questions from General Aptitude and 55 questions from branch specific subjects. GATE Exam Pattern 2025 varies for each paper depending on the sections and the marks distribution.
- General Aptitude is a common section in all GATE papers. The section comprises 15% of the weightage of the total marks. The questions in GA are based on verbal, numerical and quantitative ability. There are a total of 10 questions with 5 questions carrying 1 mark each and 5 questions carrying 2 marks each.

GATE Exam Pattern 2025 for Architecture and Planning (AR)
GATE Exam Pattern for Architecture and Planning paper has been revised this year. According to the revised exam pattern, there will be three sections of the paper- GA (General Aptitude), Part A and Part B. Part A of the paper is a mandatory section for all candidates while Part B is further divided into Section B1 (Architecture) and B2 (Planning). Students need to choose one of the sections during the exam.

GATE XE paper is divided into three sections. General Aptitude and Section A (Engineering Mathematics) are compulsory sections while candidates must choose any TWO from Section B-H of GATE XE paper.

GATE Marking Scheme 2025
For each of the 30 subjects, GATE Question Paper includes a total of 65 questions of a total weightage of 100 marks. Each paper is divided into subsections and on the basis of it, a marking scheme is defined.
- From a total of 100 marks, there will be 10 questions of 15 marks covering the entire General Aptitude section (Language and Analytical Skills).
- General Aptitude- 5 Questions of 2 Marks each and 5 Questions of 1 Marks each.
- Engineering Mathematics will cover approximately 13% weight out of 100 marks for the paper bearing codes AE, AG, BM, BT, CE, CH, CS, EC, EE, ES, IN, ME, MN, MT, PE, PI, TF, and XE
- The remaining 72% weight of total marks is acquired by the subject of the paper.
- For the paper codes – AR, CY, EY, GG, MA, PH, ST, XH and XL, the General Aptitude will cover 15% out of 100 marks, and the other 85% of the total question paper will be covered by the subject of the paper.

Negative Marking in GATE 2025
- There is NO negative marking in NAT and MSQ questions.

GATE Exam Pattern 2025: Types of Questions
Questions in GATE 2025 are broadly divided into three categories:
- Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs)
- In MCQs, candidates are provided with 4 choices out of which one answer is correct.
- A candidate has to mark the correct choice by clicking the button against the option.
- Multiple Select Questions (MSQs)
- These questions are objective in nature and each question has a choice of four answers, out of which, one or more than one choice(s) are correct.
- There is no negative marking for a wrong answer in MSQs.
- However, there is no partial credit for choosing partially correct combinations of choices or any single wrong choice.
- Numerical Answer Type (NAT)
- NAT includes questions with a value of signed real number which needs to be entered by the candidate using the virtual numeric keypad on the monitor.
- There won’t be any choices for these questions.
- The answer can be an integer in decimals
- The questions will be mentioned with up to which decimal places the candidates need to present the answer.
- As correct answers for NATs, an appropriate range will be considered to avoid penalty due to round-offs.

GATE Exam Pattern 2025 FAQs
Ques. Will the questions asked in GATE 2025 be subjective or objective?
Ans. GATE 2025 will contain 3 types of questions- Multiple-choice Questions (MCQ’s), Multiple Select Questions (MSQ), and Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions. In total there will be 65 questions and you will get 3 hours time to complete the exam. There is no sectional time limit so you can attempt the questions as per your preference.
Ques. Can I sit for multiple GATE 2025 papers?
Ans. Yes. In GATE 2025 a candidate can sit for upto 2 papers. Two paper combinations can be chosen from the given list of combinations of papers. The exam is going to be conducted for 29 disciplines. Environmental Science & Engineering (ES) and Humanities and Social Sciences (XH) have been added by the GATE authorities in 2021 while Geomatics Engineering and Naval and Marine Engineering in 2022.
Ques. What is the standard GATE 2025 exam duration?
Ans. The time duration allotted to candidates for GATE 2025 is three hours. There will be no sectional time limit, so all the candidates are free to attempt the questions from any section of their choice. The total number of questions will be 65 and total marks will be 100.
Ques. Is GATE an offline exam or online exam?
Ans. GATE is a computer-based, i.e. online exam. Since the exam is conducted in online mode and in different slots, the normalization process is used while calculating the score. This helps in maintaining equality. Check GATE Score Normalization
Ques. Are the Numerical Answer type (NAT) questions in GATE subjective type?
Ans. No, the Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions are answered as a numerical value that can an integer in decimals.
Ques. Where can I do the rough work for NAT questions during GATE 2025?
Ans. Every candidate will be given a supplement for calculations and rough work at their GATE 2025 Exam Centers.
Ques. Is it compulsory to attempt all questions in GATE 2025?
Ans. Yes, all questions asked in GATE 2025 are compulsory to attempt. There are a few papers where candidates have a choice of choosing one or two of the given sections like in Geology and Geophysics, Architecture and Plannining, etc. However, all questions asked in respective sections are compulsory to attempt. There in no internal choice in GATE Question Paper.
Ques. Will I get any negative marks for answering a question with a wrong answer in GATE 2025?
Ans. Yes, a candidate will get negative marks for every incorrect MCQ. However, there is no provision of negative marking in MSQs and NATs.
Ques. What are the total marks awarded in GATE Paper?
Ans. GATE exam papers are of 100 marks each; consisting of 1 mark and 2 mark questions.
Ques. How many questions are asked in GATE?
Ans. In one GATE Question Paper, there are 65 questions. You will have 3 hours to complete your exam. Also, there will be no sectional time limit.
Ques. Is the negative marking similar for 1-mark and 2-marks questions in GATE?
Ans. No, the negative markings for 1-mark and 2-marks questions in GATE 2025 are not similar. The negative marking for a 1-mark MCQs is ⅓ marks whereas the negative marking for a 2-marks MCQs is ⅔ marks.
Ques. What is common in all the 29 GATE 2025 exam papers?
Ans. Apart from the time duration and other basic similarities, another common feature in GATE 2025 papers is the general aptitude section carrying 15% weightage.
Ques. How many marks are allotted to Engineering Mathematics-based questions in GATE 2025?
Ans. Engineering Mathematics is a compulsory section in GATE papers with codes AE, AG, BM, BT, CE, CH, CS, EC, EE, ES, IN, ME, MN, MT, PE, PI, ST, and TF. The section carries 13% weightage in these papers. As part of the engineering sciences paper, engineering mathematics accounts for 15% of the total weightage.
Ques. Do only MCQ-type questions carry 1 mark in GATE papers?
Ans. No, there are 1-mark questions of all three types- Multiple Choice Questions, Multiple Select Questions as well as Numerical answer type questions in GATE 2025.
Ques. Can I use a calculator during GATE 2025?
