Dr. Md. Sultan Haidar Alam, Principal, NERIM Law College, a Ph.D. holder in Law under Gauhati University, has been working since 14th May 2008, with a total of 15 years 3 months standing experience in the Education Sector. He has as many as 32 Publications in Chapter/Edited books, Peer Reviewed/Blind Peer Reviewed Research Refereed Quarterly/Annual Journals, 24 paper presentations in National/International Seminars, participation in 69 Webinars. He was appointed as a Member of the “Committee to Study the Legal Education System in Assam” constituted by Govt. of Assam in the Higher Education Department vide notification no. AHE 190/2016/88 dated 21st May, 2017. He has authored a book titled as "Hindu Law” which is available on Amazon along with two other books.

Being the Principal of NERIM Law College what are your roles and responsibilities towards the students?

As the principal, my roles and responsibilities encompass, providing professional education and training to all students in all aspects related to the legal discipline. Striving for continuous improvement in instructions, methodology of delivery, and course content to ensure updates of a student with the reality of the judicial world. I actively support the growth and quality improvements of a student, to enhance, prepare, and train the student to face the judicial world. 

Also, provide state-of-the-art infrastructure and all facilities to students, to support and propel their career paths may they be managerial, administrative, or entrepreneurial. I also, take the initiative in improving the education level and methodology.

What valuable advice would you like to the students for them to have a prosperous career ahead? 

My advice to the students for having a prosperous career would be to concentrate on their strengths, not be afraid of failure strive for excellence and success will follow. They should neither let go of their dreams nor forget to live their life well. They should have a vision and pursue what they love and must have a desire to succeed. Lastly, they should not wait for opportunities but create them.

What do you see as the department’s/college's greatest strengths and how it can be enhanced?

Our department as well as the college’s greatest strength lies in the fact that we provide individual attention & and responsiveness. We deliver hands-on experience and, make use of a cooperative learning approach such as group discussions in class. We have integrated technology such as slide presentation, PowerPoint, etc. into our learning [process. and retake some tests if required. We aim to develop creativity through exploration (research, notebooks, hands-on). There is an excellent library of training material for in-class and online.

How does the curriculum of NERIM ensure the best practice of the industry?

The curriculum of NERIM ensures the best practice of the industry in the way that we have designed various Curriculum of Specialization Courses such as Marketing, Finance, IT, Operations, etc., as per the Industry Expectations with live Examples, Case Studies, Live Projects, etc. We have started the use of learning recourses, multimedia, and internet recourses for teaching is in place. We have provision of project or research activities in each Specialization such as Moot Court, Legal Aid Camp, Clinic, and Operations to hone practical and Analytical skills.

When you came to the College, what was your vision and how are you trying to achieve the same?

When I first came to the college my vision was to learn, design, develop, and teach courses work as scholars and artists, and make fresh contributions to the program.

I wanted to strive to be a dynamic center of innovation and creativity dedicated to teaching and lifelong learning along with professionalism and research.

Self-development and Learning is a continuous process. I am trying to achieve my visions by believing in myself for achieving the vision by way of systematic and step-by-step implementation of ideas.

What are the challenges you faced/ are facing to uplift the quality of education at your College?

Nowadays in every sector facing high competition and making students employable and industry-ready professionals, NERIM is working continuously and systematically towards the fulfillment of goals successfully.

Do you have any extracurricular activities/ programs to enhance the skills of the students or expose them to real-world challenges?

Different extracurricular activities such as Sports (Game related sessions), Court visits, Moot Court Competitions, and Legal Essay Competition (NGOs related activity) around and Community Development Program

How do you help your student to cope with the competition being so high in the outside world?

We encourage and improve competitive spirit in students so that they can cope with the highly competitive world by making students attentive in class and creating interest in the subject. We try to engage students so that they follow class seriously and also ask students questions in between. We also conduct quizzes, conduct class tests, and give prizes.

What are your views on the placements and higher education about the students from your college or how does the university prepare students for Higher education?

Placement is a decisive factor in the successful completion of any coursework at the graduate or postgraduate level. It is a dream of every student to get placed in top MNCs to achieve their set goals and objectives.

Most of the students in college got placed in different Industries successfully and based on Interest students want to pursue higher studies, Career Counselling is also given by the experts and many good number of students are pursuing higher studies.

How do you strategize the curriculum and how often does it get updated to make it befitting for the students?

Constant internal monitoring and periodic and annual internal review of our Curriculum have been designed and updated as per the standard.

What are the best practices offered by the department to the students that help them gain the necessary skills?

The dedicated faculties of the Department are making continuous and systematic efforts to develop necessary skills among students such as Adaptive thinking, Communication Skills, Collaboration Skills, Critical thinking and problem-solving Skills, Soft Skills, Creativity, and innovation.
