The admission process is through the CAT exam conducted by the university. An application along with 1500 has to submitted before the preferred date announced by the university. The last rank details changed in terms of reservation. In general it's 2000-3000 for OBC it's 7000 for SC & ST 15000. Exams and competition for the exam are difficult

I had been admission to the merit quota. Which was based on my keam rank which was 33000. This rank is calculated by averaging 12th marks and keam entrance exam marks in pcb subjects. The application process is a very lag tedious process. We need to gather many documents and reach out to separate counters for confirmation which is very lagging. I think half of the process could be done through online

Whether you should take admitted to CUSAT or not depends on your personal goals and what you are looking for in a university. CUSAT is highly-regarded in India, known for its strong programs in engineering, technology, and science. Its credibility can further be assessed through the ratio of North and South Indian students on the campus which is almost 50:50. This means CUSAT is well known only among South Indians but also among North Indians.
CUSAT has two campuses, one in Cochin SOE and another in Alleppey - CUCEK. The placement scenario is somewhat similar on both campuses.
Before getting admission here, you need to know that the only key to getting placed is good grades and no backs. You won’t be spoon-fed the professor's notes here and will have to survive on your own. If you are enthusiastic, then only come here.
However, you should research more about its program offerings to determine if they align with your interests and career goals.
In the context of CUSAT "spot admission" and "real-time admission" are terms that are sometimes used interchangeably, but they can have slightly different meanings depending on the specific context. Both the terms are explained below:
Spot Admission :
Real-Time Admission :
Depending on the unique policies and practices of the institution, these phrases may be used differently in the context of CUSAT or other universities. While real-time and spot admission both attempt to speed up the admissions process, there may be differences in the specific steps and lead times.
The closing ranks for CUSAT CAT 2022 for general category in different branches in B.Tech are as follows-
Course |
Closing Rank |
Computer Science and Engineering |
1651 |
Naval Architecture and Ship Building |
618 |
Electronics and Communication Engineering |
2662 |
Electrical and Electronics Engineering |
2970 |
Information Engineering |
2617 |
Safety and Fire Engineering |
1855 |
Polymer Science and Engineering |
2330 |
Instrumentation Technology |
2498 |
Mechanical Engineering |
2321 |
Civil Engineering |
3151 |
As you can see, for a general category candidate, the closing ranks did not go beyond 3000 in the previous year. However, for an SC/ST candidate, the closing ranks are more relaxed. Also, if you are from some other state, 50% seats are reserved for Keralite students.
During CUSAT spot allotment, you can get the seats that are left or not filled up. These seats are filled rank-wise. Speaking statistically, a lot of students who are above you rank-wise will show up during the spot allotment. So, your chances depend upon the number of candidates above you who show up on that day.
Unless you have some special reservation, your chances of getting admission into the MSc. integrated courses in CUSAT with rank 930 are quite low. The integrated MSc. program was started by CUSAT in 2018. Even with minimum advertising, almost all the seats were filled by students within rank 500 that year.
Only 60 seats are available for this program and each student has to study Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Statistics during the first four semesters. You can choose your specialization for the 5th sem based on your marks in these subjects. If you are planning on appearing for the exam again, I would recommend you to work really hard. In 2018, within rank 200, around 29-30 seats got filled and within rank 500, more than 55 seats got filled. The seats are expected to be filled within rank 200 in the coming years. The exam for B.Tech and integrated MSc. is the same, but you need to register separately for both the programs and the rank list for both is also separate.
Basically, with rank 930 you can not get admission into CUSAT for an integrated MSc. You must maintain a rank lesser than or equal to 200-500 to get an admission without any difficulty.
For non-Keralite candidates, to get into CUSAT, you need to secure a minimum of 60%. CUSAT has campuses in Kochi and a remote area of Alappuzha district. For a rank under 2000, you will get admission to the Kochi campus, otherwise, you will get into the Alappuzha campus. I would suggest you work hard and get into the Kochi campus. To get into the Kochi campus, you will have to score a minimum of 60%, and to get a good branch like CSE and Safety, you will have to get more than 75%.
After the CUSAT CAT result declaration, a rank list is prepared and enlisted. This is followed by the online option registration for the desired Engineering courses at SOE, CUCEK and Kunjali Marakkar School of Marine Engineering. For seat allotment, the CAT ranks are considered. Out of the total seats for B.Tech program, 50% are reserved for Keralite students, 40% are All India Merit seats, and 10% are reserved for NRI students. There is also category based reservation.
In Naval Architecture & Ship Building, Instrumentation Technology and Polymer Science & Engineering, 90% seats are reserved for Keralite students while only 10% are All India Merit seats. After online option registration, you have to download the CUSAT CAT Seat Allotment Letter. You have to report at the venue on the allotted date and time for the counseling rounds. At the venue, you have to pay the admission fee and your seat will be confirmed. If you do not turn up at the venue or do not pay the admission fee, your candidature will stand canceled.
Even after paying the admission fee, you can attend the further rounds to see if the option which you gave higher preference to is allotted to you. Then you need to confirm the seat by paying the fees in case the seat is changed from state merit to payment. If you do not get your desired seat, you can attend the real time admission and spot admission round to check for the remaining/available seats which will be alloted on the basis of rank. During the spot admissions, all category seats are dissolved into general seats, except for SC/ST seats.
This is the procedure for allotment of Engineering seats at CUSAT.
The CUSAT Common Admission Test does not follow any percentage system. You won’t be shown your CAT score either.
The answer key is released 2-3 weeks after the exam, and sent to the candidates’ emails. You can use it to calculate your approximate score in the exam. But that won’t be of much use either. I would suggest you wait till the declaration of your rank.
You can expect a seat in the main campus with a rank >= 4000. A rank higher than that will get you a seat at the CUSEK campus only. Naval Architecture, Safety and Fire and CS are the best branches of SOE. The first two are its flagship programs. For these three branches, you need a rank below 1200.
This is all the necessary information about the engineering admissions in CUSAT based on your CAT rank.
Admissions at CUSAT are based on the candidates CAT ranks. A certain number of seats are reserved for students from different communities like KSC, KST, etc. There is a state merit list specifically in place for Keralite students. This is because a certain number of seats are exclusively reserved for locals. The community based reservations are a part of this state merit list. It is not a part of the All India merit list.
If you belong to Kerala, you have high chances of getting a top branch even with a below par rank. After filling the general seats, the community seats are filled for different category students. There is also an NRI quota in place.
