Class 8 Mathematics Chapter 13 Direct & Inverse Proportions – Important Topics
A direct and inverse proportion are used to show how the quantities and amount are related to each other. They are also mentioned as directly proportional or inversely proportional. The symbol used to denote the proportionality is ‘∝‘. The proportion is said to be a direct proportion between two values when one is a multiple of the other. The value is said to inversely proportional when one value increases, and the other decreases. The proportionality symbol is used in a different way.
Direct Proportion: Two quantities are said to be in the direct proportion when the value of both the quantities increases or decreases together or when the ratio of the two given values remain constant. It is represented by the symbol ‘∝‘. This means,
a/b = k
Indirect Proportion: When the one quantity increases, the other quantity of the value decreases, it is called inverse proportions.
