For Engineering Discipline
- Candidates must be a graduate of M. Tech./ equivalent degree OR B. Tech/ equivalent with 60% marks (55% for SC/ ST candidates) or a CGPA of 6.0/ 10 (5.5 for SC/ ST candidates).

For Science Discipline

- If a candidate is unable to meet the graduate requirements, he/ she must have a Valid GATE scorecard or Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) of CSIR/ UGC/ NBHM/ DBT/ ICAR/ ICMR / ICPR or DST INSPIRE Fellowship.
For Humanities Discipline
- Candidate should have M. Phil/ equivalent OR M. A./ equivalent with 55% marks (50% for SC/ ST candidates) or a CGPA of 5.5/ 10 (5.0 for SC/ ST candidates).
- If a candidate is unable to meet the graduate requirements, he/ she must have a Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) of UGC or another equivalent fellowship or UGC-NET Lectureship (LS).
- Candidates who do not have UGC-NET or M.Phil. are also eligible to apply, provided they have a minimum of 2 years of professional experience.

IIT Dharwad PhD Selection Criteria
- The IIT Dharwad Ph.D. selection process is highly competitive and involves two rounds of interviews (Round I and Round II). Only eligible applicants will be permitted to participate in the selection process, which is designed to evaluate the applicant's research potential, academic background, and motivation for pursuing a Ph.D. in Various Disciplines.
- The first round of the interview process will be conducted in online mode and will consist of a detailed discussion of the applicant's research interests and academic background. IIT Dharwad offers financial assistance to its PhD students under categories like Teaching Assistantship, and Visvesraya PhD Fellowship. Given below are the complete details of the financial support provided by IIT Dharwad:
Teaching Assistantship- Under this scheme, for the students with MTech/ ME/ MSc/ MPhil, the assistantship is payable for a maximum duration of 5 years or up to the thesis defense. Currently, the monthly rate of the scholarship is INR 37,000 for the first two years and INR 42,000 and HRA for the remaining years.
Visvesvaraya PhD Fellowship- It is an institutional scheme where PhD seats are allocated to the institutions. Under this scheme, candidates are provided a fellowship of INR 38,750 monthly in 1st and 2nd years, and INR 43,750 every month in the 3rd, the 4th, and 5th years. Students can also get a Research Contingency Grant Support of INR 1.20 Lakhs.
