- Being a top notch institute of India, IIT Bombay stands for producing one of the best engineers of the world.
- The intelligent peer group in the institute makes a healthy environment to learn and develop skills.
Dislikes
- Because of relative grading in exams, there is some sort of unhealthy competition among batchmates and friends to score more than other.
- The infrastructure of newly built buildings are much good, but some old hostels are not in a proper condition.
Course Curriculum Overview :
The interest to learn about civil engineering, structures, infrastructures attracts me to choose the course. The curriculum is designed so that one can get knowledge of their respective fields. There are also courses of management, economics other than core so that one can understand about these crucial fields too. The courses are well designed and makes one prepare for real world applications also, but the delieveing of lectures by some professors can be improved. Also the lecture questions and practice questions are way too easy than those that are asked in exams which makes exams a bit difficult. Exams are held two times in a semester that are mid-sem and end-sem and also there are two quizzes. So, in total there are 4 exams -2 quizzes (generally 10% each weightage) and 2 exams (40% each).
Internships Opportunities :
Various internship opportunities are being offered in campus durung 3rd year, while some of these companies further gets converted to job offers. Most of the in campus internship opportunities offered in campus are with stipened. Some of the top intern companies that offer roles for IIT BOMBAY students are Bain &Co., Amazon, Google, etc. In the intern 2022-23 a total of 1104 internship offers were made in different sectors like IoT, AI and ML, R&D, consulting, etc.
Placement Experience :
The campus placements in the college is amazing. Students from 7th and 8th semester become eligible for campus placement however some gets PPO(pre placement offers) from 6th semester itself. All the renowned companies from all sector be it coding, finance , consultancy, civil, mechanical, electrical visit the company to recruit students. For civil department, the top recruiters are L&T, TATA, RAMBOLL, etc. College Placement 2023 record: Highest : 3.67 crores per annum (internationally) and 1.68 crores per annum (domestically). Average: 21.2 lakhs per annum Median: 19 lakhs per annum. In civil department the percentage of students placed in campus are about 84% (in 2023). People get revruited in core fields(engineering specialisation) or in non-core too. Now , I have not planned much about, but I will sit in campus placement offers as they are really jackpot for one.
Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :
The fee structure is as follows (for 1 semester): Tuition fees: ?1,00,000 Service charges: ?6,950 Hostel fees: ?12,350 Mess fees: ?22,500 There are various Scholarship schemes being offered for students: 1- Institue-Merit -Cum-Means : For different financial categories for students having gross parental income less than ?5 lakhs per annum and meritious performance in campus. 2-Remission of tutition fees for all SC/ST reserved categories students. 3- Free messing facilities for SC/ST students with net income under ?5lakhs per annum. 4- Other Govt./Private Scholarship schemes. The campus employment opportunities in IIT BOMBAY are amazing. There is TA role (Teaching Assistant) in institute where students can earn income. There are opportunities to apply for TAs of different courses under professors and this TA ship is stipened with varying amount (around ? 25K/ semester course). Also students can apply for research work under professors, where also a stipened is given to them.
Campus Life :
Various social, cultural, technical fests and events are being conducted regularly in the institute. Mood Indigo: The Asia's biggest cultural fest is organised in IIT BOMBAY in the month of December. Prople from different places come to attend this event. Various programs, performances, competitions are being organised in MOODI. Techfest : The flagship tevhnical fest of IIT BOMBAY is organised also in late December, where participants from different universities come to participate in the Robo wars. There are various clubs like Drama Club, Acting Club, Comedy Cons, Technical clubs, etc. and team like NSS, NCC rhat serves asa way for one to explore his/her passion. The sports facilities too are amazing in the campus. There are grounds and courts for numerous games lime cricket, football, basketball , badminton, kho-kho, etc. Also there is gym facilities available in the campus. The classrooms are also well furnished with centralised ACs and projectors.
Hostel Facilities :
The hostel facilities provided us not so good in the campus. The hostels given to freshers are good, but from 2nd year onwards the hostels alloted are older hostels. The older hostels are not in good condition and are not too spacious to accomodate two students. The space is congested within hostels , which is a problem. The mess menu is great with all types of food, but sometimes the quality degrades which should also be improved. The hostels are allotted during admission time only and the process of registration for hostels is also easy and simple. However, in a high rented place like Mumbai, the hostels are affordable and value for money. The rents in PGs are way too high, thus taking hostel inside campus is a good option
Admission :
The admiission into IITs is not too easy, one has to clear JEE ADVANCE exam witha commendable rank to get into the college. Eligibility: 1- Passed class 12th PCM with 75% or above. 2-cleared JEE ADVANCE exam with above cutoff rank for the course. For Civil Engineering IIT BOMBAY, the cutoff rank this year was 4300 for general category. However, the data differs for other categories as there are reservation for SC/ST, OBCs and female categories. The exam level difficulty is much high making it one of the toughest exams of the world, but with regular study and practice the exam can be cracked. The exam journey starts from clearing JEE MAINS(whhich occurs two times ina year- Jan and April) and those who cleared the MAINS exam get chance to sit for JEE ADVANCE (once in a year).
Faculty :
The Civil Engineering department in IIT Bombay has around 50 professors of different specialisations like transportation engineering, water resources engineering, structural engineering, etc. The student to faculty ratio in pour department is about 3.0. All the faculties are well qualified and completed their research, P.H.D from premier institutes. All the faculties have immense knowledge of their field and are a great resource of knowledge for someone who want to learn deeper in their field. Most of the professors explain well and make the classes interactive , so that students can get maximum out of the lecture and learn the application of the concepts. Professors are also approachable via mails or by visiting their offices during office hours. Questions an doubts can be asked in classes too, but if someone wants more clarification, can approach them by sending mails or visiting their offices.
