What is spinal cord ? How does it's work and describe the spinal cord
R
rency daniel

The spinal cord is a column of nerve tissue that connects the brain to the lower back. It's a key part of the central nervous system (CNS) and is protected by the vertebrae.

The spinal cord's functions include:

  • Motor functions: Directing voluntary muscle movements
  • Sensory functions: Monitoring sensation of touch, pressure, temperature, and pain
  • Autonomic functions: Regulating digestion, urination, body temperature, heart rate, and blood pressure
  • Relaying motor and sensory signals between the brain and periphery
  • Providing separate neural circuits for many reflexes

The spinal cord receives messages from the skin, muscles, joints, and internal organs about pain, temperature, touch, vibration, and proprioception. These messages are then relayed to the brain along one of two pathways: the spinothalmic tract and the lemniscal pathway.
