What's New in NIT Calicut?
NIT Calicut admission 2024 is now closed. The dates for GATE and IIT JAM 2025 have already been released.
- For M.Tech admission, GATE 2025 exam date is Feb 1, 2, 15, and 16, 2025. The registrations for the same will remain open from Aug 24 to Sept 26, 2024.
- IIT JAM 2025 exam date is Feb 2, 2025 for MSc courses. The registrations will be open from Sept 3 to Oct 11, 2024.

- NIT Calicut BTech admissions are based on the JEE Mains exam. The JEE Mains session 2 results have been declared. The BTech cutoff for the general category ranges from 8657-21277 rank.
- NIT Calicut PhD admissions are currently going on and the dates have been extended till April 28th, 2024.
- MTech/ MPlan/ MSc & MBA programs under the Self-Sponsored Category and MTech/ MPlan programs under the Sponsored1 Category admissions are ongoing. The last online application submission date is May 05th, 2024.
NIT Calicut UG students are admitted via JEE Main rank and have to participate in JoSAA counselling. NITC BTech's overall cutoff ranged from 8657 to 21277 rank and 4455 to 5256 rank for the CSE program for the general category students. NITC PG student admissions are done through CCMT to MTech Programs based on GATE scores and by CCMN to MSc programs based on JAM scores. Additionally, admission to MBA programs is done via CAT scores. The MTech cutoff ranged from 352 to 622 marks and 889 - 975 rank for the MSc program.
NIT Calicut's 2023 placement rate was 83.65%, with students receiving the highest package of INR 50 LPA and an average package of INR 13.77 LPA. NIT Calicut, an autonomous institute is one of the 31 institutions of national importance, funded by the Government of India. With 7,300+ students and 15 departments, this institute was established in 1961 as a Regional Engineering College (REC), NIT Calicut was transformed into an NIT in 2002. Other colleges i got were cusat, cet, tkm kollam. I chose nit calicut, since it is included in top tier colleges in India. It is included in top 5 nits. Nit Calicut has placement records with average annual package of 20 lakh. I could not apply for iits since i didn't qualify jee advanced. I got admission to nit calicut through josaa counselling after clearing jee mains. There is also csab counselling if needed after josaa.overall admission procedure was smooth.

You can enter NIT Calicut through JEE Mains but scoring above 98%ile for a general male category student.The admission process is first you need to go through jossa counselling where you put your choices and then you can apply for a spot round through CSAB.Both the counselling has quite low fees and they tend to go for a week or so. There are reservation benefits that the students can avail.There are options for home state vs other state students along with GEN,OBC,SC/ST,EWS, and PWD students.Females also get reservation for there admission. JEE Mains is the exam you need to qualify to get entrance in this prestigious college.

Admission to the college is through an all india based entrance exam called joint entrance examination(JEE). After the exam the courses are allotted based on the cutoff and the percentile of the students through JOSAA portal. In addition to that if there are excess seats left spot admission also takes place. Reservation plays an important role in admission. Merit Cum Means Scholarship:
- The Merit Cum Means (MCM) Scholarship is awarded to the needy and meritorious students belonging from the minorities.
- In order to be eligible for MCM Scholarship, candidates should have scored a minimum of 50% marks in their last qualifying examinations.
- Also, the students should have an annual family income of not more than INR 2,50,000 from all the sources.

My best friend is studying EEE at NITK and he is quite happy with the department. The teachers in the department are a bit strict. But if you bring up a good project idea and stay attentive in their class, you’ll be in a good position. Also, scoring good grades can be a bit tough, but with hardwork and good preparation, you will surely ace your exams.
In terms of EEE placements, NITK, NIT Trichy, and NITW are all equally good options.
As a NITK student, you will get certain benefits. These are-

- Among the three institutes that I have listed, NITK is the most suitable for people from other parts of India. Is NIT Calicut good for girls (I have heard there are a lot of restrictions for girls). I plan to join EP and I live in Kolkata. Will it be a good choice?
NIT Calicut is safe for girls but most of its rules are very regressive and gender biased. In the girls' hostel, first-year students have to seek multiple permissions for something as simple as going out to get paracetamol. The NIT Calicut girls hostel curfew starts at 7 PM for first year girls and is relaxed to 9 p.m. for seniors. The exit timings are 6 AM onwards. Everyone has to attend the daily roll calls.
To travel home, you must submit your permission form two days in advance and exit/enter the hostel between 7 PM to 6 AM. This causes a lot of inconvenience, especially if your train is scheduled at odd hours.
Hostel amenities are quite average, and just enough for survival.Traveling from Kolkata to Kozhikode is not easy, even by flight. You will get to visit home only during the summer breaks. Also, take up EP only if you are really passionate about Physics and are planning to go for higher studies. If you plan to work in the industry, the placements for EP are quite low. If you can manage with its policies and far-off location, NIT Calicut has a great learning environment and quality of education. Its campus is also really good. NIT Calicut enhances your personality and aids your growth.

How is Civil Engineering at NIT Calicut? Is it worth studying? What is its package?
As a Civil Engineering student, I will dissuade you from pursuing this branch. You might be considering Civil for the tag of IITs, NITs or BITS. The campus placement scenario is not good for Civil and you will be left to either pursue an MS abroad or prepare for GATE/ESE. Both these options have nothing to do with the college tag. You can get an IT job through campus placements, but core jobs are highly difficult to grab. Also, the salary you will be offered in core jobs will not be at par with your NITian tag. Practically speaking, to crack GATE and ESE is more difficult than to crack JEE Mains because of one’s age group at this point. Other government exams are highly irregular and can not be depended upon.
For an average student, it is better to go for CSE or Electronics at an average NIT/ other college. The scenario is not pleasant for Core branches, especially Civil, in India. However, if you are passionate about pursuing Civil, its official placement figures for 2022 are provided by NIT Calicut.

The course structure is such that you will have plenty of free time at your disposal. There is less workload and fewer classes in CSE. The faculty is filled with experienced and supportive teachers.

Here are some things you can do at NIT Calicut to make the most of your free time-
To keep yourself busy, you can join karate classes. This will keep you active. If you are into video games, you will always find others to join you. You can watch late night movies and tv series with friends. You will surely end up cooking some maggie in your kettle when late night hunger strikes. You can go cycling during the weekends, in the morning. But make sure to take proper care and use proper bicycles because the roads in Kattangal are very steep. Apart from all this, if you wish to explore a bit, you can visit IIM Kozhikode or Munnar/ Kochi.
All that I listed up till now are fun activities. But for a more productive weekend, you can read novels or take part in quizzes and prepare for those. You can also be a member of a club at NIT Calicut. By organizing club events, you can connect with various people and learn management skills.
If you are a CSE student, your workload will be quite less at NIT Calicut. Thus, you will get plenty of free time. You can use this leisure time by participating in extracurriculars, learning a new skill and making memories with your friends.
How was your experience in NIT Calicut if you are a North Indian?
Here is my experience of staying at NIT Calicut as a North Indian-
- Climate- Kozhikode experiences extreme showers during monsoon season. If you belong to a place where it rarely rains, you will find it even more difficult to adjust to the climate. During summers, scorching heat is accompanied by humidity. Standing under direct sunlight will drench you in sweat.
- Food- The mess food is not good but the vicinity has some restaurants that serve decent food. However, their North Indian meals are not good. The city does have some Punjabi restaurants which will not disappoint you.Non-vegetarians have plenty of mouth-watering delicacies to choose from, but vegetarians have limited food options. I highly recommend shakes from the mini canteen.
- Language- The localities, especially auto drivers, speak only Malayali. Therefore, you will face some inconvenience. Inside the campus, however, people speak and understand English clearly. They can also understand (but not speak) Hindi.
You will feel culture shock when you first arrive at NIT Calicut. But as time goes by, you will start loving this place and your college.
Is it possible to change branches after the first year at NIT Calicut?
NIT Calicut has some of the most illogical rules regarding branch change, some of these include:
- To be eligible for branch change at NIT Calicut, one needs to score CGPA of 8+
- Only 2 2 people are eligible to transfer to another branch from a specific branch.
- Only two incoming transfers are allowed per branch.
As a result of this ridiculous policy, a more deserving candidate fails to change his branch. For example, someone with CGPA 9 could not change his branch because he was the 3rd topper of his branch while someone with a CGPA 8.8 can change his branch if he is the topper of his branch.
So, branch change at NIT Calicut depends a lot on your CGPA and obviously your luck!

- The ECE department of NIT Calicut is one of the oldest and most well-established departments of the institute and is also accredited by NBA. It's second only to the CSE department and the competition here is intense.
- The standards of examination papers setting and vivas conducted are excellent and evaluate the students' performances pretty well.
- The department is well-known for its high-tech embedded systems lab. The lab mechanic as well as the facilities offered help the students conduct cutting-edge research under the guidance of the lab assistants and mechanics.
- The faculty of the department is highly experienced and learned with thorough knowledge of their respective fields. They have a knack for delivering concepts in a well-organized manner.
Cons
- Being one of the oldest departments, its buildings and overall infrastructure is deteriorating. The entire department is spread across various buildings and it takes time to visit faculties.
