BITS Goa - One of India’s Premier Institutes

Dislikes

  • Bad grading in math courses and difficult courses in general as compared to other branches
  • Campus too far from the major cities making travel very expensive

Course Curriculum Overview :

I chose MSc. Mathematics dual degree course. It is a 5-year course wherein at the end of the 2nd year, students get their preferred BE degrees based on the CGPA of their 1st year. The faculty at BITS Goa is top class and the curriculum is conforming to the latest industry standards. There is a 0 attendance policy in the college meaning one can choose not to attend classes though it is advisable one attends them. There are mid sem exams and semester-end comprehensive exams. Apart from that, there are quizzes and labs depending on what the course instructor/faculty deems fit for the course. Most courses are moderate. They are neither too easy nor too difficult. One needs to be up to date with whatever is being taught in the class and that should suffice. Grading is relative and different for different courses.

Internships Opportunities :

Had great internship opportunities. Companies that come for internship opportunities: Google - 1.1 lpm Microsoft - 1.25 lpm Uber - 1.6 lpm Nutanix - 1 lpm Atlassian - 1.3 lpk Rubrik - 3 lpm These are mostly IT or software engineering roles. Finance and Core companies also come. Projects depend on companies what they want the interns to do. Most IT companies hire frontend/backend or full-stack developers. The work at these high-paying companies is lastedt industry stuff.

Placement Experience :

Students can sit for placements in their final year. Many companies visit the campus for hiring drives. Companies like Google, Microsoft, Atlassian, Rubrik, Uber etc. These are some of the biggest IT names in the industry. There are companies that come for corre recruitment too. The highest and average packages are kept confidential. But if rumours are to be trusted, the highest package domestic is around 80lpa Atlassian whereas the average is around 24L for IT and 17L overall. More than 90% of the batch gets placed usually. I plan to work in the IT industry for a while. After that, I plan to go for Masters's's in Business Administration. It is all a plan for now, nothing is set in stone.

Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :

There is a fee hike every year. It is usually around 10-15% of the tuition fee. Cost varies from batch to batch. New students (2023) could have a semester fee as high as 275000 per semester. There are two types of scholarships - MCN and Merit. MCN is a merit cum need and can be availed by students who are not from financially able families. Merit scholarships are purely based on merit. There are different slabs of scholarship percentages based on a student's CGPA. One can get on-campus jobs/internships by applying for on-campus drives. The stipend varies from company to company.

Campus Life :

There are three fests: Waves - Cultural fest (November) Quark - Tech fest (February) Spree - Sports fest (March - April) The library has tons of books and journals ranging from textbooks to published research material. All the classes and lecture halls are air conditioned and have a seating space of around 40 per room. Students can play sports like football, volleyball, basketball, cricket etc. as they have their dedicated fields and courts. Apart from that, we also have a student activity center where students can play indoor sports like chess, pool, billiards, carrom etc. We also have gym facilities. We have a bunch of student departments and clubs. These include fest departments like sponsorship, PR, nights etc; technical clubs like robotics, web/app development, competitive programming etc; performing clubs like dance, music, drama, hindi poetry and shaayari etc. There a whole lot of other clubs. It is difficult to list each one of them.

Hostel Facilities :

Every student at BITS has to live in a hostel on campus, even local students. Day scholars are not allowed. Hostels are nice and have all the facilities with clean washrooms, good rooms, and daily staff who perform their duties. There are more than 20 hostels for men and women. Men are not allowed in women's hostels and vice versa. There is no in or out time for hostels. Mess food is good. Every day there is something different for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Students get non veg 3 times a week. The mess fee is around 4000 per month. The hostel is registered during admission. The hostel fee is around 20-30 thousand per semester.

Admission :

To enter BITS, candidates need to take the BITSAT exam. Marked out of a total of 390 marks, candidates get their scores on their computer screens immediately after the exam. The cutoff varies for different branches across the three campuses of BITS. The application form can be found at BITS' online portal. One needs to look out for the application submission deadline. There is a nominal fee for applying for the exam. Other relevant information can be found on the portal. There is no reservation in BITSAT. Branches are allotted purely on merit.

Course Curriculum Overview:

The relevance and comprehensiveness of the curriculum are often evaluated based on factors like practical applications etc. A good curriculum should balance theoretical knowledge with practical skills, preparing students for the real world.

Placement Experience:

Placements are one of the best in the country. There is a good mix of tech and nontech companies coming on campus. The Internship program helps you get immersed in the corporate culture and come out ready for the outer world.

Admission:

A student needs to qualify the entrance exam of CSIR or UGC NET JRF and also a person is having basic qualifications with sufficient training of 2-3 months is necessary. Then one can apply for the application online. I fitted in the first one, so I got selected for the interview round which happens only once in a year. Luckily I cleared that also and got an admission in the institute.

Placement Experience:

The institute gives opportunities for the graduates and post-graduates with internships in which they are allowed to carry out various projects related to oceanography. These internships are really beneficial for us to grow and get well-researched information of our own.

Remarks:

After coming to BITS Pilani, Goa and spending some time over here, I can rarely speak anything bad about this campus. Everyone here is very helpful especially the seniors. The campus is so big and so well maintained that is is the place I am very happy to be at, just to give an example, our Cricket ground is maintained by BCCI, our campus has a tie-up with IEEE, TEDx, Google and any more.
