Birla Institute of Technology and Science - [BITS], MSc in Phy + B.E in Electronics and Electrical

Remarks

BITS is one the top engg colleges in the country. It deveops the student as a whole. I already mentioned all the goods and the bads. One thing i would like to focus is regarsing our education system. Our system doesnt allow us to think logically and with our free mind. Our career decision are influenced by our parents and the amount of pay the career offers. Its only during our college life we finds our interests and passion. And sometimes its gets a little late.BITS although being the top engg. college, doesnt promote true knowledge and learning. Resulting in students to more worry about their grades than actually what they learned.

Entrance Preview

BITSAT, JEE mains and adv.Among the courses studies during +2 (phy, chemistry and maths) really enjoy doing phy problems. Scored well in mains, but not in advance and boards. So, coudnt get a good IIT or NIT. Had a decent score in BITSAT. Therefore, went for MSc in phy.

Course Curriculum Overview

4

We had basics courses from all branches and streams in our first year. Most of these courses had advanced concepts of the courses done in +2. All these courses gave us further understanding and real life applications. I was yet to get my B.E. degree based on my performance. All these basic courses help me alot to find my interests and finally decide which B.E. i should aim for.

Internships Opportunities

Havent done yet.But every student does 2 compulsary internship in our college.1. After its 4th sem in summer break for two months.2. In its either of sem in last year.College gives freedom to chose one own internahip company and location. The first 2month intership rarely offer any stipened and is more sort of first real life experience of profressional world. The second one though offer a decent stipen. Many students are offered PPO after this internship. Since i havent done one, no idea about the companies.

Placement Experience

4

Regarding the name of companies, you can refer to our college website.More than 90percent of the student got placed. The one who didnt had cgpa less than 5.The amount of pay offered differed branch to branch and company to company.Following are the avg. packages of each stream last sem (approx)-CS- 11 lpaElectronics- 7lpaMechanical- 6lpaChemical- 8lpa

College Events

5

We have 3 big festivals each year-Waves-CulturalQuark-TechnicalSpree- Sports.Waves is India's top 5 cultural festivals among all engg. Colleges in India. The 3 day festival invites some really popular celebrities and artists. Colleges from all over the country majorly Mumbai, Banglore, Delhi, and Hyderabad participates.Quark is also a 3day festival held in the first week of Feb each year. It consists of Robotics, Coding, Graphic, etc events. The festivals although progessing every year, finds some participation issues due its location (Goa).BITS Goa has one of the best sports infrastucture and facilites, which makes Spree India'a best Sports Festival. All popular and even less popular games are played during the fest. Most popular ones are Footbal and Basketball.

Fee Structure And Facilities

Since the institute is private and we get a better facilites as compaired to govt. Collges, the fees is also slightly expensive.Whether its feasibld or expensive depends on the standards of student's family. Its managable for us.

Fees and Financial Aid

Institute offers 2 type of scholarships-One is Merit - which is based on only merit Second, Merit cum Need which is based on both merit and child' parents annual income.Institue also have loans facility.

Campus Life

4.5

BITS Goa has the best club and sports culture. Right from the beginning students gets involved into various clubs, departments depending in his/her interests and skills. Club and Departments work very enthusiastically, holding regual meetings among its member to analyse and plan work.Apart from the 3 big festivals, there are regular Music, Dance, Drama and Sports events/competitions. There is a inter-hostel competition also held each year, which all kind of events ranging from cultural, technical to sports. The College doesnt entertains any kind of Reservations or Quotas. Hence we have students from every corner of the country, bringing a huge diversity in both religion and economy. Since all the students are nearly equally worked hard to get into college, they respect each other. Bringing a great unity among them irrespective of the diversity.Sex ratio is very poor and is getting poorer each year. Current batch has approx boy 11:1 girl ratio.

Hostel Facilities

4.5

Hostels are decent. All hostels in campus are single bedrooms with common bathrooms.Sincd the camous is located in the outskirts of the city, its mandatory for all the students to live in hostels itself. The commons bathrooms and corridors are washed twice a day. The cleaniness of the rooms is student's own responsibility. Each hostel has around 180 rooms, 12common bathrooms (each having 4toilets and 4showers), 1common room (with few indoor games and 42' LCD), couple of watercoolers and aquaguards.Bathrooms also have hot water facilitt 24x7. Although they are washed regularly, the toilets infrastructure is not.properly checked.

Alumni/Alumna

The seniors are very friendly and helpful. They are always open to give helpful tips and experiences. There is seperate group of people who handles the Alumni Affairs. We also have a facebook page named 'Bitsians for each other' in which nearly have all the alumis as well as students are mutually connected.

Exam Structure

Most of the courses have 2small tests of 25% weighatge and a big one towards the end of sem comprising nearly 50%. Other courses have a Mid-Sem structure instead of 2small test. The present have its both pros and cons. Pros- its makes the student to prepare and study through out the sem to get good grades.Con- it becomes a little hectic for the student to manage its both academics and extra activites.

Faculty

3.5

These was huge difference between the teaching/faculty of coachings and those in college. Former used to teach very slowly which helped us build the concept gradually. Whereas in college the faculty used to move at very high pace. With a lot of other distractions (laptop, clubs, department, new friends), most of the time we lost track of what is being taught in class. Soon we realised that its not the same spoon feeding teaching style and we need to be more effecient and self reliable.

Placement Experience:

Students can sit for placements in their final year. Many companies visit the campus for hiring drives. Companies like Google, Microsoft, Atlassian, Rubrik, Uber etc. These are some of the biggest IT names in the industry. There are companies that come for corre recruitment too. The highest and average packages are kept confidential. But if rumours are to be trusted, the highest package domestic is around 80lpa Atlassian whereas the average is around 24L for IT and 17L overall. More than 90% of the batch gets placed usually. I plan to work in the IT industry for a while. After that, I plan to go for Masters's's in Business Administration. It is all a plan for now, nothing is set in stone.

Admission:

A student needs to qualify the entrance exam of CSIR or UGC NET JRF and also a person is having basic qualifications with sufficient training of 2-3 months is necessary. Then one can apply for the application online. I fitted in the first one, so I got selected for the interview round which happens only once in a year. Luckily I cleared that also and got an admission in the institute.

You love your life here and you're surely gonna miss it after the end of your course here. A downside here is the sex ratio which is there in any other engineering college of India. A upside is that there is no reservation here.

The campus is so big and so well maintained that is is the place I am very happy to be at, just to give an example, our Cricket ground is maintained by BCCI, our campus has a tie-up with IEEE, TEDx, Google and any more.
