Insights and Insides about IIT Bombay

Remarks :

It is highly ranked in terms of academics and research facilities. Mumbai has very nice weather as compared to other cities like Delhi, Chennai, Kanpur etc. The campus is located in the heart of the city, with easy access to the airport and other necessities. The admission process is entirely based on Jee Advanced Rank. Toppers have historically chosen this institute and this was a major contributor to my decision for choosing IIT Bombay.

Course Curriculum Overview :

Electrical Engineering at IIT Bombay is in my opinion the most diverse course with curriculum greatly overlapping with computer science and also provides a lot of mathematical courses. Highly qualified faculty which can provide a remarkable research exposure at an undergraduate level is another positive. Meticulously designed courses and evaluation focus more on the application side and problem solving which I personally like.

Internships Opportunities :

Many of the companies that come for placements also come for offering internships and many of the students get pre-placement offers after their internship periods. The internship stipends are quite high and many time is close to the stipends offered to a full-time employee. Apart from companies, many European and US universities also offer research internships and are a major help to students planning to do phds in US and Europe.

Placement Experience :

Being the number one institute in the country, a huge number of companies come for placements every year. Being greatly accessible by being in the heart of the city Mumbai, travel and reach never hinder any company to not come here. There are several Japanese companies who visit only IIT Bombay in India for recruitment. In recent time many, US-based and European companies have recruited students in high number from the college. About 90% of the student who applies for a job get placed in some of the other company. I too got a job from the institute placements. With packages ranging to over a crore every year, the average salary offered is about 16-20 lacs per annum.

Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :

For the general students, the tuition fees are very much. 2 lacs a year is an amount too much for middle-class general families, given that it’s a government-run institute. Reserved categories of course benefit here as well apart from getting a seat, the get a full tuition fee exemption. The institute, of course, helps the families in need and with income less than a certain limit, so that is a relief. There are teaching jobs which students can take to earn themselves a stipend of 6000 a month.

Campus Life :

The institute has numerous clubs and festivals for social interaction and development. There is a finance club, analytics club, web and coding club, electronics and robotics club. Gymkhana association is pretty good and well equipped with almost all sports. The institute is also the host to Asia’s largest cultural fest Mood Indigo as well as the largest technical festival Techfest which invites major groups and celebrities every year.

Hostel Facilities :

Hostels are pretty small and old. Many of them are in dire need of repair and renovation. The institute is trying hard to maintain them and make use of the space available for new construction, but I think it will take time. But I would say it is not that bad and students get used to it. In fact, hostel memories are greatly cherished by everyone for their entire life. The food is good and edible not like the ones shown in typical movie hostels. The prejudice I had before having a meal at my hostel were no where justified and I was happy.

Interview Experience :

No, there is no GD or PI for undergraduates. The admission is solely on the basis of JEE advances rank. For M.Tech and PhD admission, however, there are personal interviews arranged in person, where they get to talk to the professors from their respective departments.

Placement Experience:

On-campus placements are available at this college, but only mass recruitment companies come here, offering salaries between 1.6 LPA to 4.5 LPA. Companies like TCS, Accenture, Tech Mahindra, Capgemini, and IBM visit every year. However, the TNP officers are not good at their jobs. Some students who are TNP coordinators receive special opportunities in placements. The IT department has more placements than the CS department, with almost 50% of students getting placed. On the other hand, in the CS department, only 30% of students get placed, and other departments do not have good placement opportunities. The average package is nearly 3 LPA, and the highest package is 7 LPA, offered by TCS. The placement information published on the college website and in the brochure is completely wrong and misleading. Some off-campus placement statistics are included in it.

Course Curriculum Overview:

The course which I have taken is electronics and telecommunication which is considered to be the toughest course . I took this course as I wanted a balance between my coding journey and also due to my love in electronics . Although the course is easier to understand, there are few courses which are outdated and can be updated with the current situations and scenario. Sometimes I feel that the time given to study for exams is less but again it's on the student and how he / she pays attention.
