In Physics, the highest weightage as well as important topics are Electrostatics, Magnetic Effects of Current and Magnetism, Current Electricity, and Optics. Students must focus on the concepts of the topics and learn to reminisce the formulas. Important topics from chemistry are Electrochemistry, Coordination Compounds, etc. Calculus, Algebra, and 3D Vectors are some of the core Mathematics topics with the highest weightage.
Commerce stream includes Applied Mathematics, Economics, Business Studies, and Accountancy. Accounting for Partnership Firms and Companies from the Accountancy syllabus carries the highest weightage of 60 questions. Tips for Commerce students would be to become an NCERT nerd and write long informative answers.
Students of the Arts stream often complained about the History and Political Science syllabus. History from the Arts stream carries the highest 8 marks weightage of questions. Geography is one of the scoring parts of the class 12th Arts stream. Important topics of Geography are Primary and Secondary Activities, International Trade, Land Resources, and Agriculture.
The Board follows the curriculum of NCERT, hence, Science stream students can also prepare for the entrance exams like JEE Main or NEET. Books by Oswaal and Arihant publications are also enough to be conceptualized. Solving the last 10 years of PYQs will be beneficial too.
CBSE Board will not conduct the open book exam (OBE) for class 10 and 12 students in the 2024-25 academic year. It will be continued in classes 9 and 11 in the selected schools only.

CBSE Class 12 Stream- wise Preparation Tips 2024-25
We have recently interviewed students from the Science, Commerce, and Arts stream to learn about their CBSE class 12th journey of the 2023-24 academic year. While having a conversation with them, they shared some valuable insights regarding preparation tips for upcoming aspirants taking preparation:
Science Stream Preparation Tips Shared by Indrasish Banerjee
The preparation tips shared by 2023-24 passed-out student, Indrasish Banerjee for the Science stream are as follows:
When did you start your preparation for the Board exam?
It will be better if one starts their preparation from the very beginning of their session. Although, whenever you are starting your preparation, creating mind maps is always important. Also, I want to suggest to the students that if they are planning a strategy, they should stick with the graph till the end date. Without consistency, one cannot score better even if one starts preparing in May or June itself.
What would you suggest to students who are starting their preparation in August?
If you are in completely zero knowledge mode, you can still ace the Board exam, even if you have started your preparation in August. Just last 2 months you need to keep yourself free for submission of project/ internal assessments, practical works, and solving PYQs.
Is it necessary to complete every chapter?
In the CBSE class 12 exam, candidates need not learn every topic. This is because questions will not come from every topic in the exam. However, the concepts of every topic you study must be very clear.
Does the questions in the exam are direct?
No, sometimes it may be not. To answer the question, students need to have a clear idea of the topic and make notes of important points, and formulas. In my time, I have used flashcards to remember formulas, and it helped me tremendously. The questions that come are twisted as well as concept-based.
Any reference books you can suggest for it?
Apart from textbooks that follow the NCERT curriculums, I can suggest the reference books of Arihant and Oswaal publications. They make the case study of each year’s question papers and publish them in the form of a book. Candidates can be aware of the important chapters and questions as well. Me and my friends followed it thoroughly and it was beneficial for us.
What are the important chapters for every subject?
- Important chapters of Physics: Electric charges and fields, Electrostatics, and Magnetism
- Important chapters of Chemistry: Organic chemistry is comparatively easier (like Haloalkenes, Haloarenes, Aldehydes, Ketones, and Biomolecules). Also coordination compounds, d, and f-block elements.
- Important chapters of Mathematics: Arithmetic part, Calculus, Algebra, 3D Geometry, Linear Programming
- Important chapters of Biology: Flowering plants, plant reproduction, reproductive health, Mendel’s law of inheritance, ecology and evolution, biodiversity
What is the best strategy you would suggest for Maths?
Practicing different types of questions regularly and raising the difficulty level gradually. If your steps and concepts are clear, scoring Maths in the exam will not be a daunting task.
Is coaching mandatory or self-study is enough?
Coaching is always optional. If you attend your classes in the school properly, then self-study is enough. Even after joining the coaching institutes, I believe self-study is important to know your potential.
What is the best time to start solving PYQs?
After completing a segment or chapters, one should start solving PYQs.
Was there any impact of reducing the syllabus?
Yes. For reducing the syllabus, students like me, who were preparing for entrance exams did not manage to get a good decent score for being unaware of the topics. Although, if students are not preparing for the entrance exam, might find it beneficial.
Which one is the easiest as well as toughest among Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Maths?
If we consider it in an easy to difficult manner, it will be Chemistry, Biology, Physics, and Mathematics. Chemistry and Biology are often regarded as one of the scoring subjects among the four. Mathematics is regarded as the hardest one. Physics in Class 12 is comparatively less difficult than that in Class 11.
Should we wrap up our studies before starting internal assessments?
We should wrap up our studies before the start of internal assessments in schools, i.e., by January. During this period, pre-tests also start in schools Students will not get any time to study or start a new chapter at that time.
Any last-minute preparation tips?
Do not start with any new chapters. Active recalling of what you have learned is very important from the start day till the day of the exam. Making notes in class 12 is helpful for revision later on.

The preparation tips shared by 2023-24 passed-out student, Subham Chakraborty for the Arts stream are as follows:
Which is the toughest subject in Arts?
Political Science and History are often considered as difficult subjects by most of the students. The subjects are often regarded as boring. Also, in History only, there will be 8 marks of questions, which is the highest.
Which is the easiest and scoring subject?
Sociology and Geography are counted as the easiest and scoring ones. Sociology can be interesting as it is a mixture of both social science and political science. Students might not require proper bookish knowledge of Sociology and can put forward their own opinions also.
When did you start your preparation for the Board exam?
I started the proper preparation 6 months ago, i.e., in July. Also, I stopped going to school at the end day. I have wrapped up my preparation 1 month before the exam.
Should we opt for the language subjects if we start our preparation in August?
For English, I would say if you are capable of understanding the summary of prose and poems, you will need just 2 months to complete the syllabus. Also for practicing grammar, you can refer to Ray and Martin and also the book of Oswaal. Those who are not capable must work on their writing skills, like letter writing and literature part, and it has the highest weightage also.
Which chapters should I focus on and which should I omit?
CBSE Board releases the weightage of every topic for every chapter along with the publication of the syllabus. It will be available under the ‘Curriculum’ section on the website, cbseacademic.nic.in. Hence, those with the highest weightage should be covered at the very first. If you get time later on you can start with the low weightage topics.
For project works, how many pages should be written?
Minimum 20-25 pages and it will be better if you write in blue ink or ballpoint pen. Avoid using a catchy design, use minimal pictures, and keep the content precise.
For the 2025 year’s exam, solving PYQs till which year is enough?
Just practicing the last 10 year’s questions will be more than enough for 2025 aspirants. Also, I would suggest having in-depth knowledge of the chapters. This is because the Board already increased the number of MCQs in the exam.
Do questions from previous years repeat?
Yes sometimes. However, it may be a twisted question rather than a direct one.
How much time is provided by the Board between the exam days?
The Board provides ample time in between the exams. Students can get even a 1-month time gap between the exams. During this period, no new chapters should be started. This time is only for active recalling and solving PYQs.
Commerce Stream Preparation Tips Shared by Roopam Saha
The preparation tips shared by 2023-24 passed-out student, Roopam Saha for the Commerce stream are as follows:
What are the best preparation tips to answer long informative questions?
Practice through Arihant, PYQ, class tests, tuition teachers, and self-study. A combination of all these can help a student to get a good percentage. Also, the syllabus has been reduced, so it is a plus point.
Which subjects from the Commerce stream are difficult and need more practice?
Students should practice and focus on Accountancy, Economics, and Business studies curriculums. Solving questions from these three subjects is important along with keeping ample time for revising.
How to manage time on the day of the exam?
Candidates must start with questions holding more marks at first and the least marks at the end. Time management is important and candidates can build their accuracy by following this method. The 1-mark questions are time-consuming, even if they have the lowest weightage in the question paper.
How much time is provided by the Board between the exam days?
Before the Accounts exam, we got the 15-day gap, and 8 days before Mathematics. So, it depends. However, there will be a good time provided by the Board.
