CBSE Class 12 2027 Practical Exam Date (Expected)
CBSE Class 12 practical exams were held in school premises between January 1 and February 14, 2026, before theory papers began. The same school-issued workflow applies to the upcoming compartment exam.
- Issued: Early February 2027
- Action Required: For the compartment exam, students must collect the new admit card from their school atleast 7 days before the exam.

Ques. Can I appear for the compartment exam if I failed in three subjects?
Ans. No. The CBSE Class 12 compartment exam is available only for students who failed in up to two subjects in the main exam. Students who failed in three or more subjects are declared "Essential Repeat" and must reappear for the full exam in the next academic year.
- Compartment eligibility: failed in 1 or 2 subjects only.
- Essential Repeat: failed in 3 or more subjects.

Year-wise CBSE Class 12 Exam Dates and Trends
Looking at the past five cycles helps students see how stable the CBSE Class 12 calendar has become after the COVID disruption years. The board has settled into a mid-February start and a mid-May result release as the standard rhythm.
| Year | Theory Window | Result Date | Overall Pass % |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 | February 17 - April 9 | May 13, 2026 | ~88% |
| 2025 | February 15 - April 4 | May 13, 2025 | 88.39% |
| 2024 | February 15 - April 2 | May 13, 2024 | 87.98% |
| 2023 | February 15 - April 5 | May 12, 2023 | 87.33% |
| 2022 | April 26 - June 15 (Term 2) | July 22, 2022 | 92.71% |
The 2022 cycle is an outlier because of the two-term exam model used during the pandemic. From 2023 onwards, CBSE has held the theory exam in a single window starting February 15, with the 2026 cycle starting two days later (February 17) likely to accommodate the longer date sheet for the 39 major subjects. Pass percentages have hovered between 87% and 89% in the post-pandemic single-window era, suggesting an evaluation standard that the board now considers calibrated.
Ques. Why does CBSE always pick mid-February to start Class 12 exams?
Ans. The mid-February start gives CBSE enough buffer to finish theory exams by mid-April, evaluate answer sheets through April and the first week of May, and declare the result by mid-May. This window aligns with the admission calendar of central universities and most state higher-education boards.
Will the CBSE Class 12 2027 Exam Pattern Continue in Single-Phase Format?
The two-term exam pattern used in 2021-22 has not returned, and CBSE has confirmed that the single-phase annual exam will continue. From the 2026-27 academic session onwards, however, CBSE plans to pilot a twice-a-year exam model under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 framework, which is currently in the proposal stage.
- The 2027ncycle is expected to be conducted in single-phase format from February 17 to April 9, 2026.
- Marking scheme retained the 33% pass criteria for each subject (theory + practical / project / internal assessment).
Ques. Is CBSE moving Class 12 to two exams a year from 2026?
Ans. The 2026 cycle was conducted in the conventional single-phase format. CBSE has indicated that the two-exams-per-year model will be piloted from the 2026-27 academic session onwards, subject to the Ministry of Education’s formal notification.
