- The opportunities you get here are amazing. You can literally do anything once you come to campus be it related to studies, sports of cultural activities
- The professors here are really knowledgeable although you will need to take initiatives to get something out of them.
Dislikes
- The student culture is mostly focused around getting high paying jobs and very few are really working on something original and innovative
Course Curriculum Overview :
The course covers a lot of basic concepts in the field of physics and prepares you for further works in the field. Througout the 4 years you cover various subfields of physics including Quantum Physics, Solid State/ Condensed Matter Physics, Statistical Physics, Electromagnetism and Photonis and so on. You can also then take electives in fields of your interest and the content here is unlimited. Other than that you can be part of varios research groups working on the frontier of modern physics. The course content is often heavy and requires effort if you want to sccore good grades. Otherwise you can just take a back seat and enjoy the physics as well. Professors are really helpfull if you ask for their help, otherwise you might find yourself struggling. The course provides you with all necessary tools for a carrer in advanced physics although as a standalone it might not amount to much.
Internships Opportunities :
Lots of internships are available, and they are basically a less intensive version of placements basically. The stipend here ranges from a few tens of thousand to a few lacs per month. Most good pacages are around 1lac to 1.5lac. There are also many studensts going for research internships abroad.
Placement Experience :
The placements at IIT Bombay are generally good. There are companies that come specifically to this college only in all of India (they dont even go to other IITs). The packages that most people get range from 15-20lacs. There are higher packages also exceeding 1cr, but only very few students get them . Likewise there are also very low paying jobs offered (lowest i know being aroung 6lacs) but that also is limited to few students. Additionally you get Internships also at many good companies paying you large amounts (some beiing as high as around 6lacs per month). The same pattern is reflecetd here as in placements as in most people get somewher aroung 1-1.5lacs per month. (What I mean by most here is most good packages, the number is students getting them might be around 30%% of total students)
Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :
Their are two major partsof fee, one includes tution and hostel fee which is 1.19 lacs per semester and other is 22.5k as the semester mess advanced. Of the 1.19 lacs 1lac is tution fee and this is waived for economically needy students. I am not sure of the procedure but many scholrships are also available, all off which are merit cum means based meaning your family income needs to be less than a certain amount (6lac) to avail those. The 22.5k SMA is for the mess services and you get refunded the remaining amount after deducting the mess bill (around 17-18k each semester). There is also the option to opt out of messsing services in which case you get majority of the SMA back. The campus placements for my batch were dissapointing. Around half of the people (UGs) were left unplaced after the phase 1 of placements. A good paackage would be 17-18 lacs which many students got. There were also higher packages >1cr and the lowest I know were 6lacs.
Campus Life :
The opportunites you get at IIT Bombay are more than anything you coulg ask for. There are state of the art facilities for many sports. The cultural clubs cover every aspect of extracurriculars from dancing to cooking to music and more. Ther are weekly events by one club or the other open to all. The library here will provide you with all the books you need for the courses you take although you might have to racw your batchmates to get if for common courses as only 5-6 copies are available at max for any book. There are tech-teams here making anything you can dream of and if suppose you do dream of something else you can just start you own tech team. This is the general description you would get from most students. But there is also the other side. The level of work done by tech teams has been declining for the past few years (post covid). There has not been a single patent filed by any tech team from IIT Bombay which is sad comming from the best tech institute of the country.
Hostel Facilities :
When you joun you are put in a seperate hostel made for freshers. They are decent hostels although you dont have much happening there. The mess if terrible. In the second and third year you are shifted to senior hostels which are basically decades old buildings with small rooms. You share your rooms with a roomate. The senoirt hostels is where you have the most fun. They include their own sports facilities an the mess is also decent for most hostels. The girls however remain in the fresher hostels for all 3 years. In the final year you get single rooms in newly build hostels which are nice infrastructure wise but not the best for social bonding.
Admission :
The standard JEE-Advance entrance exam is the only way to get into IIT B.Tech courses. The cutoff for my branch specifically (Engineering Physics) was around 1500 in CRL. The opening rank was around 300.
