Dream of Many: IIT Guwahati

Dislikes

  • The heavy workload, with assignments, projects, and exams, stress students. Balancing studies with extracurriculars and personal life is be tough.
  • The academic schedule often limits socializing time on campus. Despite the variety of social opportunities on campus, the demanding academic schedule often leaves students with limited time for socializing.

Course Curriculum Overview :

From the very beginning i was very interested in Computers so that's why i chose Computer Science as my course in IIT Guwahati. This course includes a lot of subjects that make us learn about the real world like DSA, Algorithms, Computer Architecture and many more which are applied in real life. Professor quality can be improved by tougher selection process that i feel is lagging behind. Also exams too place very often due to which learning process is hampered so i think they should be less frequent. Their difficulty level should be increased as some professors just give previous year questions in their exams which is not good.

Internships Opportunities :

Internships are available from start of the 5th semester. Some common companies that offered internships to IIT Guwahati students across different domains are: Quadeye, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Goldman Sachs, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Infosys, JPMC, Barclays,Ebullient and many more. Stipends start from Rs. 50000 and go upto Rs. 450000(Quadeye, Ebullient) per month. Roles offered are SDE, ML intern, Systems Role, Quant Role ,etc. Students submit their CV having some projects and then are shortlisted and reviewed by the companies that come for internships.

Placement Experience :

From 4th year students become eligible for the placements . Companies visit in Campus and takes the students they are interested in. Some of the prominent companies that visit our campus for placements include Quadeye, Aplhagrep, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Goldman Sachs, JPMC, Adobe, Flipkart, Intel, Qualcomm, and many more. The highest indian package offered during IIT Guwahati placements was Rs 1.20 crore per annum and the highest international package was Rs 2.40 crore per annum .The overall placement rate was 78.04%. Out of 1425 registered students, 1112 were placed successfully. After getting degree i wish to go for a Quant based based company following my pasion.

Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :

Though our institution provides heavy discounts on fees for the students belonging to backward sections of the society like OBC, SC, ST and EWS, but there is no scholarship for people like us in General Category and since the net fees per year is Rs. 2,60,000 per year which is very large, it is quite difficult to meet this. Till now, i have not taken part in any employment opportunites but I have taken part in some hackathons from which I have earned around Rs. 20,000 . They are Alphaverse Premier League and World Quant Alpha Submissions. Internships are available from the beginning of 3rd year where students get paid for their work. Overall, the course is quite expensive for general students

Campus Life :

Anually , a lot of fests take place like Alcheringa(Cultural Fest) during March, Techniche (Tecnical Fest) during September and Spirit (Sports Fest) during December. The central library of IIT Guwahati is very large has a lot of books. Ther are over 1 lack books in our library. Anyone from IITG can access them inside library and can also issue it for 21 days. Our class takes place in Lecture Hall with seating capacity of 250 students using projector. IIT Guwahati boasts extensive sports facilities catering to a wide range of interests. These include: Cricket grounds, Football fields, Tennis courts, Basketball courts, Volleyball courts, Badminton courts, Table tennis facilities, Indoor sports complexes for activities like chess, carrom, and billiards. A lot of clubs are also there to improve students living like Finance club, Cadence(Dance), Coding Club and many more.

Hostel Facilities :

As a student at IIT Guwahati, I have experienced hostel accommodation .Here's an overview of it: Hostel Facility: IIT Guwahati provides hostel accommodation for its students, and each hostel offers various facilities: Each room is shared by two students till second year and then single occupancy room and it comes with basic furnishings like beds, study tables, chairs, and Almirah. Some rooms have attached bathrooms with 24/7 hot water supply. Others use shared one. Each room is equipped with electrical outlets and lighting fixtures. Meal Quality & Menu: Hostels usually have mess facilities that provide meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The meal quality and menu can vary depending on the mess committee and the catering service provider. Generally, the food is nutritious and hygienically prepared. Hostels are allocated by IITG itself for all the students in IITG.

Admission :

Admission in IITs takes place through JEE Advanced examination. People from all over India give the JEE Mains exam first and then JEE Advanced for those who get selected. 1.5 lac people from a total of approx. 10.5 lac get selected to give JEE Advanced exam and JOSSA takes care of the admission process. Studets have to fill their priority order of colleges and branch and then based on their ranks they are alloted their best possible choices. The extremely difficult JEE Advanced exam checks students' skills in a variety of subjects, including chemistry, physics, and mathematics. It provides access to some of India's most esteemed engineering schools, such as the Indian School of Mines (ISM) and the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). Class 12th students give this exam. Can apply for this on IITs official site. The JEE Advanced exam is in 2 parts 3 hours each with an in between break of 1 hour.

Course Curriculum Overview:

I've been enthusiastic about exploring more about software and programming which influenced me to choose the course of Computer Science Engineering. With further development of artificial intelligence, it opens up better learning and job opportunities for students. In my university, computer science is taught by experienced teachers and faculty but it would be better if they were more inclusive of certain topics which are extremely important for the students and raising the level of teaching including practical learning and understanding and also examining the student's capability is one of the aspects to be included.

To be honest, placements were dissapointing however it is getting better day by day. The major hindrance is the location factor but TnP cell works very hard to bring companies and to provide students with equal opportunities.
