Gulafshan has been working as the Head of Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department at Xavier Institute of Polytechnic and Technology, Ranchi, Jharkhand. she has done M. Tech from IFTM University Moradabad, B. Tech from SIET Prayagraj and Diploma from GWP Tharpakhna of Ranchi as part of her education. She started her professional journey as a Part-Time Lecturer with XIPT in 2021 and later on she was promoted to full-time Lecturer and at last the Head of EEE Department in March 2022.

Also, at XIPT, her key responsibility includes overseeing the department and students, with a strong focus on academic excellence and her journey here has been fulfilling, as she is committed to students' growth and departmental success.

How do you bring in a practical and industry oriented approach towards subjects?

With the intention to make subjects more practical and industry oriented, we have prioritized hands-on learning and have also developed state-of-the-art laboratories where students can easily carry out various kinds of research and test their ideas.

And our labs are managed by an experienced Lab Assistant who comes from a background at SAIL, thereby bringing valuable industry insights to the practical learning process. Also, after every lecture, through experiment to make students understand the practical application of concepts is conducted.

Apart from this, professional visits are an integral part of our curriculum and the effectiveness of our approach is evident through the feedback we receive from HR departments of companies where our students are placed. These professionals consistently appreciate the skills and knowledge our students bring to their roles and this recognition reinforces our belief that our industry-focused approach significantly contributes to producing skilled and job-ready graduates.

What latest program are you offering in your institute to help students stand apart from the crowd?

In order to help our students stand apart from the crowd and enhance their capabilities, our Xavier Institute is offering an innovative, full-time and 3-years duration Diploma course in various disciplines of Engineering including Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering and Electronics and Communication Engineering.

And each of these specialization provides knowledge of valuable tool to students that can amplify their performance and distinguish them in a competitive environment. Also, specialized training sessions to improve aptitude, critical thinking, problem-solving and reasoning skills of students are conducted as and when needed and they are also provided objective questions of technical subjects in the form of assignments from time to time. 

How do you prepare your students to efficiently deal with the outside competitive world?

For the purpose of making our students ready for the outer competitive world, we have adopted a multi-faceted approach and at first we have prioritized the importance of a strong academic foundation by providing a strong knowledge base to students, fostering a conducive learning environment and preparing them for the real-world challenges.

Along with this, hands-on training sessions and industrial visits are conducted by us from time to time in collaboration with industry experts for helping students to connect with people who are already working in the Engineering domains from many years. This kind of face-to-face interaction also helps in bridging the gaps between student’s skills and corporate demands by inculcating required skills in young and innovative minds and making them more confident.

We have also incorporated theoretical knowledge with practical exposure to ensure holistic development of students and it is the result of our sincere efforts that many of our students are working with esteemed organizations like Tata Group.

How do the programs of your institute ensure the future readiness of students?

Our program is designed to make students academically proficient and equip them with the required skills, knowledge, and adaptability they need to thrive in the ever-evolving and technology driven future landscape and tackle challenges of the industrial world by applying their classroom learning to real-world scenarios.

And by combining the disciplines of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, our department offers a comprehensive education that encompasses both theory and practical learning and provide students with a deep understanding of the fundamental differences between these fields, enabling them to make informed choices about their career paths.

After enrolling in our Polytechnic programs, students will get numerous benefits and a broad range of job opportunities in this dynamic competitive world in the field of Science, Commerce, Arts and Engineering will be available to them once they finish the course. Along with this, they can join both government or private sector entities and work as a Junior Engineers.

When you joined Xavier College, what was your vision for it and how are you trying to achieve the same?

My objective when I joined Xavier College was to uplift our EEE Department and take it to new heights by ensuring the maximum number of our students gets placed in esteemed organizations. And this aim is driven by my commitment to provide engaging and relatable learning experience and quality education to students. 

We also understand it very well that the key to success lies in creating an environment where students enjoy the learning process. Hence at present, we are using innovative and liberal teaching techniques keeping in mind students' unique needs.

Furthermore, we believe that the actual success of an educational institution lies in how well the transition of students happens into the professional world, hence a perfect blend of theoretical knowledge and practical exposure is offered to them so that they can not only exceling academics but possess real-world competencies.

And it gives me immense pride to say that our efforts have yielded significant results and we have achieved a stellar 100% placement record in last academic year.

What kinds of projects do your teachers usually assign to students to enhance their skills?

The kind of projects our students usually work upon are an indispensable part and crucial component of the final year curriculum. Along with this, our curriculum which comprises 25 subjects offers complete freedom to students to choose a project which is aligned with their personal interests and expertise and those projects also provides them a platform to showcase their innovative thinking and creativity.

Also, because our aim is to promote a spirit of innovation among students, enhance and nurture their technical skills and encourage them to think beyond the conventional, so we try our best to inculcate in them a mindset that seeks to address real-world challenges and create something new and impactful. 

Along with this, projects offered by our teachers are very diverse in nature and this diversity in return allows students to explore different areas, gain practical exposure and deeper understanding of theoretical concepts, experiment with new ideas and contribute to the EEE field in tremendous ways using their unique perspectives.

Any suggestions which you would like to give to the current youth and aspiring students?

I would like to advise my dear students and ambitious youths to dedicate themselves for their studies and whatever path they choose be it related to academics or any specific domain, they should give their 100%. Because we all know that success often springs from the efforts you invest in your pursuits. Along with this, I would recommend them to choose Engineering courses as they offer a diverse range of work opportunities and equip an individual with skills needed to work in a highly competitive environment. 

And don't forget that your career isn't just a means to create a livelihood, but also a suitable chance to contribute to the growth of society. Hence, by engaging in Engineering fields, you will become a part of the process that shapes the world around us and your contributions have the potential to transform communities, industries, and even the environment.
