What students say about Simon Fraser University

Likes

  • During my first year, much of the material being taught was what had already been covered in my grade 11 and 12 ISC commerce and accounts classes.
  • The co-op advisors are good and have excellent resources regarding interview, resume, and cover letter preparation.
  • I find that co-op plays a big role in the job you will secure in the future, and I would definitely recommend doing co-op.
  • People who are qualified for the scholarship can easily apply for it through the SFU portal.
  • Campus life is good, not the best, since its on a mountain, so accessibility is limited.
  • I found a website on the universitys portal called places4students. Its affiliated with the university, and I was lucky to find a very cheap place within 2 kilometers.
  • Fees-wise, this is one of the best universities offering courses with minimum fees.
  • The co-op program is well-funded, and most students manage to find a work term.
  • I wanted to go to a university in Canada because I believe that there are more opportunities for students, particularly international students, to succeed in Canada.

    • The schedule gets stressful at times. You take a class at 8:30 and the next class is at 4 which doesn’t help if commuting. It’s situated on the mountain so at times the buses stop working if there is snow

    Overview:

My experience at SFU was really good. I met some life long friends and learnt a lot about machine learning and deep learning. SFU also helped me connecting with various people with varied experience and learn a lot.

    • The only part I don’t like about Simon Fraser University is that we have to pay full Fees for Co-Op Term as well which should be avoided. Either it should be removed or amount should be reduced. Additionally, I think students must be motivated to pursue careers in same fields they have studied like Data Science, Visual Computing and not deviate

    Overview:

Overall pretty satisfactory experience. Gained a lot of knowledge about Data Field, got my job due to subjects taught.

    • "Not all the courses are practical and some delve into too much theory. Since it is a professional course without a thesis option, I thought this was one downside. Professors may not be the best always."

    Overview:

The university is overall impressive and good. The program has 3 fields to dive into - Big Data, Visual Computing and CyBig data is my field and I believe this program is solid for it.

    • My university has three campuses with the one in Burnaby being the biggest and oldest. My classes are held at Surrey Campus, so I chose to stay close to it, however, I find that most of the events take place at Burnaby only.

    Overview:

It's been different from how we learn in India, there are research papers to read and that's where you absorb all your learning from. You may take a week or two to get used to it, but it's quite helpful. Just make sure you read smart or it'll take up a lot of your time. It's one of the best universities! Staff is ever helpful and looking forward to give you the support and nudge required at any point of time.

    Fees:

It's about 2000 CAD per semester but with the miscellaneous charges, it adds up to to 2500 CAD. But it's different for all programs. Mine isn't a unit based program.

    • Having to attend in person for tedious things like handing in specific assignments. Because of my long commute this was not ideal for me

    Overview:

I wanted to stay in the lower mainland. Enrollment included a fee, questions to be answered in paragraph form about why I want to be a student at SFU, as well as grades entered from grade 10-12. I prepared myself online. I did not enjoy my experience overall, the campus was very cold, dark, not inviting. The students were extremely competitive as it was a pre med school major so making friends was very difficult. The faculty treated everyone like a number aside from their favorites, the courses were very difficult and detail orientated.

    Fees:

~$45,000 in total around $3,000 per semester plus $1000 in textbooks, I clicker etc. Payment was online. It wasn't affordable at all, coming straight out of high school I didn't have anywhere close to that money. I was able to get a loan.

    Overview:

Simon Fraser is one of the CEPH accrediation certified course. As a dentist I have prepared for the statistics course seperately and I scored A + grade in that. And for the english proficiency test, I wrote IELTS exam and secured 7.5/9. Afterthat, I converted my score with the wes canada for the evaluation and I secured 3.86 gpa. For getting the admission, we need strong Sop, LOR, Wes score, Statistics course and relevant experience in the population health.

    Fees:

It is a 20-month program. I received the entry scholarship (2000 CAD) and the fee was 10500 CAD per year = 8500 per year, this is different from the other master's program in the SFU ( they are paying around 10000 CAD per term). Other than that, you have to pay for medical insurance. So fees wise, this is one of the best universities offering courses with minimum fees.

    Overview:

I wanted to go to a university in Canada as I believe that there are more opportunities for students, especially international students, to succeed in Canada. I chose SFU because they have a really great business program focused on the concentrations I wanted to pursue. It is a very well-known university in Canada and is still affordable! While it might not be known internationally, in the networking events or interviews that I have been to here, many employers have great things to say about the university. Additionally, I received a scholarship which was probably the deal breaker that made me choose SFU over any other university!

    Overview:

It was close to my home and I didn't want to be in debt by the time college ended. I didn't feel I was ready to move out and be on my own. My school also has one of the top Health Sciences programs in the country.

    Fees:

We paid for our school fees at the start of every term, including activity fees, gym fees, and our bus passes.
