National Institute of Technology Puducherry (NITPY) conducts sponsored research and development projects with industry and other public and private sector organizations. NIT Puducherry Ph.D Eligibility Criteria

Ph.D. in Engineering

  • Candidates with a Master’s degree in Engineering/Technology or a Master’s degree by Research, M.S. (By Research) in Engineering/Technology in the respective disciplines with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks (or) CGPA of 6.5/10 in UG or PG for admission under OC/OBC category and 55% aggregate marks or equivalent CGPA of 6.0 for SC/ST candidates.

  • Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology from CFTI with a valid GATE Score with a minimum of 90% aggregate marks (or) CGPA of 9.5/10 in UG for admission under OC/OBC category and 85% aggregate marks or equivalent CGPA of 9.0 for SC/ST candidates.
     

Ph.D. in PhysicsChemistryMathematicsPhysical Education/ Economics/ English

  • Candidates having a Master’s degree with First class in Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Mathematics/ Physics/ Chemistry/ Economics/ English/ Physical Education in the relevant discipline with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks (CGPA 6.5/10) in UG or PG for OC/OBC category and 55% aggregate marks or equivalent CGPA of 6.0 for SC/ST candidates. A valid score from NET, GATE, CSIR, or UGC is required for an Institute fellowship.

NIT Puducherry Ph.D. Admission Guidelines

Candidates will be shortlisted based on their performance on written tests followed by an interview conducted by the Departmental Selection Committee. The departmental Selection Committee will send the list of selected candidates to the Director for approval. After approval, the selected students will be offered to enroll in the program by paying the prescribed fees. They can also pay the fees every semester as prescribed by the institute, without which their registration will be canceled. Given below are the detailed admission guidelines for the candidates of NIT Puducherry:

For Full-time:

  • Regular full-time scholars with institute fellowship/JRF.Merit-based selection will determine the availability of the limited institute fellowship. Reservations will be applied following the Indian government regulations (as applicable for NITs).
  • Sponsored candidates: Employees of a public sector undertaking, Government department, Defense organization, Research and development organization, private industry/institution (or) educational institution and sponsored from industries under a bilateral agreement with the institute.
  • Self-financed Foreign: These students are admitted through the embassy of the foreign government after approval from the Ministry of External Affairs and a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Ministry of Education (or) Department of Education, Government of India (or) admitted under MoU with NIT Puducherry.
  • Institute Project Staff (Internal): Working on sponsored projects undertaken by the institute can be admitted to a Ph.D. program of NIT Puducherry through the institute’s advertisement for Ph.D. admission (Forwarding letter signed by PI to be submitted at the time of application).

For Part-Time (On Campus):

Regular / Full-time teachers/faculties/employees working in Govt. / Govt. aided / Private Engineering / Technology colleges or Science and Arts Colleges / Universities are considered under this category. At the time of application, the candidate must submit a ‘No Objection Certificate from the Parent College / Organization to relieve him/her to complete his / her coursework requirement. The candidate should have at least two years of experience in a regular/permanent position in the organization at the time of application. The college/organization must have at least 5 years of its existence for patronizing candidates to part-time Ph.D. programs.

For Part-Time (External):

  • Candidates working in reputed industries/organizations having R & D facilities, Govt. R&D Departments / National Research Laboratories / Units of Government / Quasi Government / Public sector / Organizations having MoUs with NIT Puducherry are considered under this category. The candidates must be officially sponsored by their employing organization. A candidate working in an establishment that is equipped with the necessary research and library facilities shall be considered for admission under this category (It is mandatory to submit Form 1A and Form 1B along with the application form).
  • A candidate applying for admission to the external registration program must provide detailed information about the research facilities available to him/her for carrying out research. He/She should also provide the bio-data of the prospective guide (External guide) or Research Coordinator who would supervise/ co-ordinate the candidate’s work at his/her organization. An internal guide is allotted by the institute. The candidate should be relieved to undergo coursework mandated for the program.
  • Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering / Technology from industries with a minimum of 5 years of experience and a CGPA of 7.5/10 in UG are also eligible under this category in addition to the criteria mentioned in sections 2.1 & 2.2.

For Part-Time (Internal):

A regular employee of the National Institute of Technology Puducherry is considered part-time (Internal) and may apply through the proper channels.

NIT Puducherry Ph.D Application Procedure

NIT Puducherry selected candidates will be invited to enroll in the Ph.D. program by paying the necessary fees. The candidate must also pay fees as specified by the institute each semester, otherwise their registration will be revoked. Interested candidates may only apply online at https://nitpyadm.samarth.edu.in/jan24/ for the Ph.D. program. A non-refundable application fee has to be paid through the application portal. NIT Puducherry Ph.D Financial Assistance

NIT Puducherry offers a limited number of research fellowships, which are provided to full-time research scholars admitted under the Institute Fellowship system who do not receive financial support/scholarships from state/central governments or other agencies. They must assist the Department with academic work for at least 8 hours per week, according to standards established by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, in addition to meeting other fellowship eligibility requirements. The current fellowship emoluments/HTTRA for candidates admitted under the Full-time Institute Fellowship category is Rs.31,000/- per month.
