The Eligibility Criteria is different for different specializations of MA Course. The Criteria is mentioned below:
- The candidate who wishes to apply for the MA program must have passed Graduation examination in the relevant stream from a recognized University.
- For MA in Home Science Department, the eligible candidates shall have done B.Sc.(H) in Human Development/Sociology/Psychology/ Education/Home Science.
- For MA in Museology, the eligible candidates shall have Bachelor’s Degree with Honours or Master’s Degree in relevant subjects and are eligible for admission.
- For MA in Arts Department, the eligible candidates shall have done B.Sc. or BA(H) in any of the relevant subjects – History, Geography, Anthropology, Sanskrit, Geology, Bengali, Humanities, Botany, Pali, Philosophy, Linguistics, Political Science, Sociology, Ancient Indian History and etc.
- For MA in English Language & Literature, History, Islamic History & Culture, Buddhist Studies, Journalism & Mass Communication, Sanskrit, Hindi, Urdu, Ancient Indian History & Culture, Sociology, Geography, Psychology, Economics, the candidates must have Bachelor’s Degree in relevant subject.
- For MA in Science Department, the eligible candidates shall have done B.Sc. or BA(H) in Geography or Psychology or in accordance with merit BA / B.Sc. Examination.
- For MA in Russian Language, the eligible candidate shall have BA (Hons.) in Russian or Pre-MA in Russian
- For MA in French, the eligible candidate shall have BA (Hons.) or 45% marks in Pre-MA.
- For MA in Education, the eligible candidate shall have 40% in the qualifying degree.

Selection Criteria:
Selection Criteria for MA is strictly Merit Based. Out of the total seats available in each Course, the candidates who have completed their graduation from Calcutta University will be offered 60% of the seats but the selection list will be made based on their merits.While 40% of the seats will be offered to the candidates from Calcutta (preceding year) or other Universities basis of MCQ Admission Test.

- The entire MA course has 2 Academic Years comprising 4 semesters. The four semesters have all theory courses in all the subjects offered by Calcutta University in MA program.
- The division of marks – Internal or Exam based in each subject differs basis the courses offered in each semester.
- In MA Archaeology, the final course of 50 marks is based on Field Training and Dissertation.

To apply for the M.Sc Chemistry program of Calcutta University, you must have completed a bachelor’s degree with Chemistry as a subject and a minimum score of 55% in aggregate. Admission to this program will be offered based on the merit of the university’s entrance test.
