Course Curriculum Overview
Very indepth curriculum with multiple aspects covered. No textbooks provided. Reference books and PDFs are given according to faculty members. Theory inclusion could be improved by providing a structured syllabus. Assignment submissions make up for 60% of your grades with juries covering the rest. Some subjects have tests. Each semester has one set of juries. The marks you get in these depends on your work quality, presentation skills and knowledge on the subject.
Internships Opportunities
Multiple internships are offered, some people work in companies some in NGOs and so on. Internship typically begin in the third year as a compulsory part of the curriculum. Managed by the Placement Cell, linking students with top design firms. Top Recruiters: Infosys, Whirlpool, Elephant Design, Tata Elxsi, and more. Industry Exposure: Guest lectures, field trips, and real-world projects.
Placement Experience
Symbiosis institute of design has been known to have a placement percentage close to almost a 100%. It is well connected to industry professionals with a lot of them being alumni. Seminars and talks are regularly conducted with, exchange programs and field trips also being a part of the process. Internships begin from 3rd year and placement processes begin soon after.
Fees and Financial Aid
The fees excluding hostel is around ?19.4 lakh for the entire four-year course for Indian students . International students pay more. stationary is catered for by students according to course requirements and takes up a significant amount overtime. The fees do increase later on, and there are backlog fines. There are also scholarships available for certain classes, north eastern students and military wards. details for the same are available on the SID website.
Campus Life
The biggest annual festival is called fundamentals, it is organised and carried out by Industrial design students, there are multiple events throughout the year too, all run by students. There are multiple clubs and groups available with a mental health support group included. Great campus and healthy student competition.
Hostel Facilities
The hostel is questionable. It is certainly not worth the amount of money paid. No AC, food isn't great, there have been complaints of rats. It is okay for the first year so that students get a good idea of college life and socialising, it is also very strict in terms of timing and no alcohol or smoking is allowed. No electronic appliances are allowed either. I live in a PG in Rajiv Nagar South which is cheaper and much better than the hostel. It is called the orchid girls hostel Rajiv Nagar South.
Admission
This college was one of the few colleges that had the exact course I wanted, with good placement opportunities and connections. It's also reputed in the design and law field. The website was well informed and the most striking part was their intake process. It is a three tiered system with a general test being the first, which has questions about general knowledge, design, logical reasoning and basic math, science, english etc. Once you clear the first phase, you move on to the next phase, that is the prpi test. They give you a certain task which you must perform in a certain time window and submit. In my case, I was given a music clip and was told to imagine a character and make a physical model according to the audio. Once you pass that, you move on to the interview and that's it!
Faculty
Minimum of 1 core faculty/course incharge and 1 visiting faculty for each course. Marks are giving according to assignments, they have more weightage. Juries for external grading. Certain courses have tests.
Night Life
The college does not operate at night, everything closes by 8. The nightlife around college is great and active though. There are multiple eateries, cafes and clubs near college. Things start starting down by 11:00 p.m. tho and clubs do not allow anybody under the age of 21 and even 25 sometimes. The locality is fairly safe but they have been instances of following and harassment towards women recently. As long as you are with people and in well lit areas, you're good to go. You can often see College kids in comfortable clothing roaming around near the eateries and chai shops from 6:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. College is from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. typically and could stretch to 5 p.m. sometimes. And also late night 10- 10:30 pm sometimes during events.
