IIT Guwahati Review

Remarks :

Negative - The administration. People working there are lazy, but no problem you can't expect anything from them. Obviously some of the professors are quite irritating. The widely known reason is jealousy. It's not always soothing to look at students who cleared IIT which they themselves weren't able to even though they are more hard working.

Course Curriculum Overview :

The course curriculum was not good at all. Some of the courses meant no sense to be in the curriculum. Student-Teacher meeting were held regularly and such points were brought into notice, still no action. Even the no. of courses per semester should be less. Most of the student weren't even sure of their career path at the time. Many start preparing for other entrance/jobs etc. Including unnecessary courses in the curriculum is the last thing you would do to waste everybody's time.

Internships Opportunities :

Yes my college does provide internship. But it's open to everyone. I never attended internship in my college. So I can't say. I can only say about the accommodation. Student get the accommodation in the local hostels, which is very good (most of them).

Placement Experience :

The placements in my IIT Guwahati are currently fine. Although I have not compared it with previous results. But on my time, it was great. The only problem I think is my college's geographic location. It lies in the north east, and I have heard many companies refuses to come just based on the location.

College Events :

There are two major events. Techniche - techno festival and Alcheringa -cultural fest. In techno-fest, We invite speakers from various fields to join our lecture series. We held competitions across Robotics, Case Study etc. In Alcheringa, we invite singers, band and organise various fun activites.

Fee Structure And Facilities :

The fee structure during my time was very feasible. Now over the years it has increased very much. It also depends what's your category (OBC,SC/ST). Tuition Fee various accordingly but still it's less comparing to other engineering colleges with similar stature. I have heard but not confirmed that now the tuition fees are structured based the income statement of the family.

Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :

There is one scholarship by the name of MCM offered to the students each year. Of course there is some criteria to it to get the scholarship. The loan facility is also offered. Many of friends pursued their degree on bank loans.

Campus Life :

This is where the IITs are great. Everything you need for extracurricular activities is there. Sports facilities, coaches provided for every sport. Regular competitions are held. You're not gonna get these stuffs after the college.

Hostel Facilities :

The hostels are fine. Everyone has been allotted a single room. The academic infrastructure is great. I have been to local colleges in the same city. The difference in infrastructure between mine and some of the local colleges is like night and day. Thank god, I was lucky enough to be a part of IITG.

Alumni/Alumna :

Senior student are always there to help. We have a small group/club which regularly organizes student - alumni meet. It's also up to students too to keep connected with their seniors after they left.

Exam Structure :

The exam structure is very hectic. All exam in a week. It should be extended for two weeks with gaps between exams. It's too much pressure. Sometimes you have two exams in a day, which is obviously not a good structure.

Admission :

I took the IIT-JEE 2012 entrance exam. After the selection, I went through the counselling process of form filling to opt for the branch of study. I got the college based on my All India Rank. I got Engineering Physics.

Faculty :

College faculties are like characters in a play. You will find different kinds of faculty with various personalities much like in a soap-opera. Some of them would be lovable, some will be quite helpful and some will be very short-temper. I always say Teacher and Professor are not the same. Not every professor is a teacher and it's teacher what we need as a student.

Course Curriculum Overview:

I've been enthusiastic about exploring more about software and programming which influenced me to choose the course of Computer Science Engineering. With further development of artificial intelligence, it opens up better learning and job opportunities for students. In my university, computer science is taught by experienced teachers and faculty but it would be better if they were more inclusive of certain topics which are extremely important for the students and raising the level of teaching including practical learning and understanding and also examining the student's capability is one of the aspects to be included.

To be honest, placements were dissapointing however it is getting better day by day. The major hindrance is the location factor but TnP cell works very hard to bring companies and to provide students with equal opportunities.
