GATE 2007, Subject code: In Rank 108 I opted for this college because IIT Madras has one of the best faculty for Ocean Engineering. The department of Ocean engineering at IIT Madras is rare and outstanding.
Course Curriculum Overview :
MTech in Ocean Engineering is a rare course available at Dept. of Ocean Engineering with a wide scope of study and research. Everything that we have studied and developed to operate on Earth has to be rebuilt for ocean applications. The requirement is in fact even more comparing the challenging ocean environment. Hence, this field has a huge potential for research by graduates from all engineering and science background.
Internships Opportunities :
Department of Ocean Engineering at IIT Madras provides internship in the summer session. The selection happens through a common process. Students get to learn about research opportunities and higher studies openings at IITM and even abroad. Stipend of Rs. 6000 is provided to deserving candidates.
Placement Experience :
IIT Madras has very high rate of core job placements. Job opportunities through Ocean Engineering department is very high but students have to explore off campus placements also. For Dual Degree students and BTech students there is direct recruitment to Navy and a few other government enterprises. The rest of the students are picked up in the second stage of placements with over 80% placements every year. Most of the placements are to consultancy companies in Ocean Engineering, Underwater applications and to government firms like NIO, NIOT etc.
College Events :
Wavez is the department level technical festival at Department of Ocean engineering. Similarly, there are technical fests in each department. Saarang is the cultural extravaganza of IIT Madras with participants from all over India and abroad. There will also be performers from abroad. Shaastra is the institute technical fest where IIT Madra students showcase their technical skills with various products, in addition to technical talks, seminars and workshops.
Fee Structure And Facilities :
Fees structure is very much feasible and low. IITM has two nationalized banks to support students with bank loans. In addition, For current MTech batches the revised Tuition Fees would be around Rs. 35000 and Hostel Fees including food would be approximately Rs. 25000 per semester.There is no option to stay in campus with out opting for dining. The above mentioned fees also included completely covered medical insurance, free internet facility, water and electricity charges.
Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :
MHRC scholarship was offered at Rs 8000 per month which is now raised to Rs. 16000. Interestingly, compared to all other IITs, IITM is known to be the only place where monthly stipends are not delayed.
Campus Life :
All hostels are separately equipped with free internet facility and excellent sports facilities. There is also a common swimming pool, tennis court and a few badminton courts. The campus also has excellent play ground for cricket, football and general sports. There is also a well equipped sports complex. There is no gender differentiation in most of the hostels, except for a few where hostel wardens have gone against institute rules. Girls are allowed to visit boys hostel till 9pm. There is not restriction on mingling of boys and girls. The Center for Innovation is an excellent place for experimenting with new ideas in technology. CTides is has nurtured a lot of start ups by IITM students. IIT M research park also promotes start ups. Extra Mural Lectures brings in eminent speakers from global scenario giving excellent opportunities for students to interact with them.
Hostel Facilities :
I was part of Cauvery Hostel at IIT Madras. Cauvery Hostel and similar old hostels have very well spacious rooms. But, for other new hostels are poorly designed with no proper ventilation. They are more like concentration camps with very few rooms getting
Alumni/Alumna :
Alumni plays an active role at IIT Madras. In fact, you can always figure out a large difference in standard for facilities set up by alumni and those by institute on its own. The facilities set up by alumni are well designed, aesthetic and of international standard.
Exam Structure :
