My Life at IIT Kgp

  • Number of people: There are 1800 freshers which increases competition manyfold. I dont say competition is bad, but it is a lot.
  • Politics: During General Championships, and Elections for posts, there is a lot of politics being played here.

Course Curriculum Overview :

I always wanted to go into a Math oriented course. Currently, there are only 3 math oriented courses available in al IITs. They are BS in Math, BS in Mathematics and Computing and BS in Economics. I couldnt clear the cutoff of the former 2 in the top 8 colleges, so I took BS in Economics. I am in my first year so we havent studied Economics in depth. The faculty are highly qualified. All of them have had PhD in their field and have atleast 3 years of Academia after getting their PhD. The exams are Bi-Semister, that is once in 2 months. They were pretty decently tough, but for me, I found it comparitively good. That was because I attended al lectures.

Internships Opportunities :

Internship Opportunities here at IIT Kharagpur begin in the penultimate year. I dont have much information of the same as I am in my first year and have 4 more semisters till I get to the time when I have to apply for internships.

Placement Experience :

Students become eligile for placements in their final year. That is the second to last semister. The placements of our college is pretty good. This year stats are out. According to Awaaz IIT Kgp, 1353 offers were given to 1277 students with the highest on campus placement being a whopping 1.69cr/yr package. There are no details of the overall average package, but details are out for branch wise packages. For Economics, the highest package was 50.7 lakhs/year with the average being 20.6 lakhs/year and median being 17.4 lakhs/year. I currntly have no future plans but I want to stay in India and work for my country.

Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :

I got admission into an Indian Institute of Technology, so the fees here is very low compared to other private colleges. Currently I am not availing any scholarship. Campus placements are pretty good, with most of the students who apply getting placed. Official data may show that 70(+-10)% students get placed but that is because rest continue education or get off campus placements. Fees hike is not much. The cost to study is apt and is very low.

Campus Life :

Our annual social cultural fest is Spring Fest. It is held every Year in the month of January. Our tech fest, kshitij is also held in January. IIT Kharagpur boasts Asia's largest library with thousands of books properly sorted numerically. Any book can be found anytime using the book searching machines and the numerically arranged shelves. Classrooms are very neat and clean and have proper audio-video facilities. We have sports facilities for all sports and have many competitions all over the year for the same. Name a field, there is a group/club/society for it. Spectra-Fine Arts Club. Team Kart-Formula Student Society. CGS-Computer Graphics Society. And soo many moree.

Hostel Facilities :

I have acquired the hostel facilities at Lal Bahadur Shastri Hall of Residence at Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur. Each room is provided with a table and a shelf. The shelves are in a bit bad situation but most tables are good. The rooms are painted annually. The mess food is good on some days, but just decent on others. Menu is designed pretty good on paper but isnt upto standards while being made. The hall is allotted by the institute and is pretty affordable, with 25000 for a semister.

Admission :

The enterance exam for IIT Kharagpur was JEE Advanced. I got rank 53XX and got admission into BS in Economics here. The cutoff for General Male for the same was somewhere around 6000 rank. I havene availed any reservation benefits as I belong to the general category. The application procedure was via JOSAA conducted by NTA. The process was smooth and I was able to get admission into my dream college.

Other Applied Colleges

BITS Pilani (Pilani Campus) | Bachelor of Engineering [BE] {Hons.} (Computer Science Engineering)

I didnt opt for this college as I wanted to be an IITian

Course Curriculum Overview:

I am new to this curriculum but I am happy with my decision. Median package of this year is 21 lakhs in this course and faculty are too friendly. Exams are a little on the tougher side. We will have field trips for the research purpose overall it's a very underrated branch And we can try non core if we want to...since there is a lot of free time

The campus placement is offered by CDC. After completing 2 years you get to sit in CDC interviews for internships, all the top companies for example google, BCG, McKinskey, and may others visits the college. And after 7th semesters you get to sit for placements. The highest packages goes around 2Cr. You opt for any profile SDE, data, consulting, product. I plan to get placed in product management after my degree.

Placements are good but you have to put a lot of efforts during the time of recession. Thus is the worst phase of the college life where you become stressed, selfish, and nervous. This is the tough scenario to get high packages.

Course Curriculum Overview:

It is a 5 years course. Course are quiet tougher than other B.sc colleges but it will be very effective if you are going in research field. It will also introduce you to the basic of research and it will help you in future. A habit of reading research paper are vey common in this couse work and will help in your phd. But if you dont want to pursue in research then it will be less relevant to you.

Course Curriculum Overview:

I was already very interested in economics. My college has a healthy student to teacher ratio. For every 1teacher there is 4 students. Almost of our faculties have phD and master's done. The faculty is very interactive and makes sure the concepts are clear The exams are fairly standard and the exam timings are optimal.
