NIT Durgapur Unpacked

Dislikes

  • The restrictions for the first year students are very irritating and it may seem to you that you are a prisoner trapped in a cell.
  • The system of mics and speakers used in the classroom is not configured properly and there should be a digital board in such large classrooms instead of the conventional chalk and blackboard.

Course Curriculum Overview :

In the first and second semesters in total 8 sections were made, each consisting of around 110 - 120 students. Each section had students from all the branches as the course is the same for all during the entire first year. Based on the previous year's placement stats, I tried to get the best branch and could get Civil as the best option because of my rank. The faculties at NIT Durgapur are quite good with good knowledge on the subject and there is a mix of young and old professors. The classrooms being used for the first years have good infra but lack the appropriate system of mics and speakers that should be used for such large classrooms. The classrooms to date have a chalk and blackboard system which is in no way visible from the last benches in such a large classroom. The first semester had a mid-semester exam in October and end end-semester exam in December as planned by the calendar previously. The exams were conducted on time and the evaluation was also done nicely.

Internships Opportunities :

There are quite a good number of internship opportunities that you can avail yourself of in this college if you go for the right guidance from the seniors and Career Development Cell. There are internship opportunities in companies like Intel, Qualcomm, Samsung, IBM, Cadence and many more. The companies visit the campus in the 3rd year and you can simply apply for it clear the subsequent rounds and get selected for the internship opportunities. Industrial internships can be grabbed quite easily but for research internships, you need to put in some huge effort. The most important advice for grabbing a tech placement is to keep on investing your time in coding and practicing a lot of DSA questions during your 1st and 2nd year as this would help you a lot during your internship rounds and would also help you further in your final placements.

Placement Experience :

The placements of the college are quite good but have been affected due to the recession as all other colleges. The overall average package was 13.62 LPA in 2023. Students start getting internship opportunities in the 3rd year and they sit for placements in the 4th year. A lot of known companies like Microsoft, Infosys, Oracle, Adani Group, Bajaj Auto, and many more came for placements in 2023. The highest package was 70 LPA and there were a total of 746 job offers. The placement percentage for the year 2023 was 84.66 percent. A total of 187 companies came for the placement and 85 students got a double job offer. The average package of CSE was 21.45 LPA, 17.49 LPA in ECE, 14.61 LPA in Electrical Engineering, 9.72 LPA in Mechanical Engineering, 9.02 LPA in Biotechnology, 8.87 LPA in Chemical Engineering, 8.79 LPA of Metallurgy and 7.39 LPA of Civil Engineering.

Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :

The tuition fee structure for the general category students was 113100 in the first semester and 82800 for all other semesters which comes out to be 692700 in total. Apart from that the hostel and mess fees come out to be around 19000 for the first semester and 5000 along with it as the caution money which makes up 24000 and after this in every semester there is a hostel cum mess fees of 19000 to 20000 rupees. There are a lot of state scholarships that can be availed depending on the conditions mentioned by them. The details of the scholarships are mentioned on the official website of NIT Durgapur. During your course, you can apply for internships which would give you financial assistance. To get a good internship you can contact the seniors as they are very helpful in this college. Most of the students studying here who aspire to take a job go for on-campus placements and the placements of the Civil department are good and overall placements are also good ignoring the recession factor

Campus Life :

Campus life is not good for the first years as there are a lot of restrictions. First-year students are only allowed to go to the classes to the labs and back to hostels along with officials to escort you consisting of anti-ragging committee members. Apart from this the students are never allowed to even take a step out of the hostels which are present within the campus without written permission approved by both their parents and warden. The annual tech fest is Aavishkar and the annual fest is Recstacy which I have not experienced so far. The library has a good collection of books and can easily be issued. There are two grounds on the campus out of which only one is well maintained and fit for any sports. There is a gym in the SAC which is very small in size and has very outdated equipment in worn-out conditions. There are various Instagram accounts in the name of dance club NIT Durgapur, Music club, Nature Club, Strokes and so on which can easily be found on the Instagram app.

Hostel Facilities :

The Hostels are quite a descent with a 3 seater room consisting of an almirah, table, chair, and bed issued separately for each of the people in the room. For laundry services, you need to pay on your wish to a washerman. Each floor has a common room and 4 washrooms with a geyser installed in each. The cleaning of the washrooms takes place twice a day. The mess is good for nonvedge eaters but not good for vedge eaters. There is a weekly special food on Wednesdays and some special food on Sundays. There is also a monthly special every month in the mess which is present on the ground floor of the hostel in the area of the common room. The registration process for hostels takes place along with the admission process and is quite easy to register. There is a strict rule that every student of the NIT should stay in the hostel present within the campus and not in any accommodation outside the campus so there is no chance for anybody to stay anywhere else other than the hostels.

Admission :

The admission into NIT Durgapur takes place based on your performance in the JEE Mains Examination. First, you need to apply for sitting in the JEE Mains Examination which takes place usually twice a year in January and April. The best score of both attempts will be taken as the final score. The score you get gives you a percentile which is further used to calculate your rank after normalization. The rank is finally used for allocating a seat to you in any of the NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs through the JOSAA and CSAB counseling. Registration for the JOSAA counseling takes place after the result of the JEE Advanced examination of the particular year in which you are taking the exam. Registration for CSAB counseling takes place after all the rounds of the JOSAA counseling come to an end. A college cum branch preference list needs to be submitted by the candidate while applying to each of the counseling. The seat is allocated to the students giving the topmost preference based on their ranks

Placement Experience:

At the end of the 6th Semester many MNCs and startups like CTS, TCS, Virtusa, Wipro, etc visit our campus for internship opportunities as well as pre-placement offers. Most of the students do crack some or other internship opportunities and get in-hand industry experience. For our batch the highest offer we received is 7LPA and the average package ranges at about 4.5 - 3.5LPA ! Almost everyone does get placed, but the average ranges at about 70%-80%.

The area Berhampur has some communication issues, you can only get connected with Kolkata. College is also too small in size. Labs can be better. The money, which is coming from the government, is not utilised perfectly. Other things are good here.
