A bittersweet journey

Remarks :

College management is efficient than most of the government colleges but can be definitely improved.

Entrance Preview :

I have to qualify UGC-NET-LS to be eligible to apply for this course, then qualified ICMR-JRF to vail my scholarship, and then had to appear for an intensive entrance exam and interview for the Ph.D. program in IIT Bombay which was a two-day process.

Course Curriculum Overview :

I had to do a coursework in my first year to complete a certain number of credits. It was hectic but fun. Got to learn a lot in different courses. I chose different kinds of psychology courses aimed at research and also chose some statistics courses. My course's complete focus is of course on research, hardcore research. I am working in neurocognitive science and it is a tedious topic.

Internships Opportunities :

Yes, they provide pretty good internship opportunities along with a stipend of ten thousand for the entire internship. It is a great opportunity for undergraduates who are interested in making their way ahead in their careers.

Placement Experience :

There is a placement team that brings companies and provides luxurious packages to the students. PhDs for engineering courses get pretty lucrative packages in 8 digits. In my course, however, after ph.D. one is on his or her own because we mostly look for government jobs. It is not very difficult though because you will have a degree from an IIT.

College Events :

IIT Bombay is the hub of cultural events. Mood Indigo is India's one of the most sensation college festival. Music festivals, Rock nights, talk and shoes, mood indigo is laced with celebrities entertaining us. Other than that we cultural events only the PGs. Overall, IIT keeps us busy with its cultural activities

Fee Structure And Facilities :

It is definitely more expensive than other government colleges. People who don't earn decently might have to take loans to satisfy the fees and expenses. I pay about 40,000 for the entire semester which included my fees and hostel accommodation. For some, it might be steep.

Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :

I personally avail myself of my scholarship from the Indian Council of Medical Research but the institute provides a Teaching Assistantship stipend to those who don't have JRF and have qualified UGC-NET. There is some help from the alumni cell also for financially challenged students

Campus Life :

The gender ratio is skewed like every engineering college. In my department which is Humanities and Social Sciences, the ratio is quite fair. Extracurriculars are ample here. Photography, fine arts, dance, music, drama all clubs are there where a student can unwind with their hobbies. It is almost therapeutic.

Hostel Facilities :

In a place like Mumbai. I think this is the best one can get. The hostel and a clean and nice place to live in. I have been given single accommodation but the hostel seats are very coveted and not adequate. Students are all accommodated though. Mess food is good enough, healthy, and with lots of variety. It is kind of pricey though.

Alumni/Alumna :

The alumni network and senior students association are super strong. They make generous contributions to their alma mater.

Exam Structure :

During coursework, it was quite hectic. We had semester exams then we had mid-semester exams. They were either objective or multiple choice questions or mixed with subjective questions. Apart from these, we had surprise quizzes, presentations, assignments, and projects. So, yes it was hectic indeed.

Admission :

After qualifying for my UGC NET, ICMR-JRF, I had to apply for the program which was the first elimination round. The advertisement/notice came on the website and the entire application process was done online. After my application was selected, I was called for an entrance exam. After qualifying that I was called for an interview having the entire faculty as the panel. After going through that I got my admission.

Faculty :

They are all qualified and experienced and all from distinguished universities and all of them have been meritorious students. They come with their materials well prepared and the classes mostly use audio-visual aids to make the classes more interactive.

Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research, Mumbai is an advanced research institution. To get admission in M. Phil program, the candidate should have Master's degree with atleast 55 percent and then they wi be selected on the basis of entrance and merit.

Placement Experience:

M.Phil students from IGIDR have been placed in the corporate sector. Some of the students pursue their doctorates. The various recruiters are bank of America, HDFC Bank , IIT Kanpur etc. The students are well trained before they pursue their careers.

The entrance examination for postgraduate studies in IIT is GATE. But getting admission in IIT even after qualifying GATE is not easy. Your ranks in GATE must be less than 1000 to get admission in IIT. Those who score very (Gate score > 800) high can get admission directly in some IIT. For others, some departments take their own written exam followed by an interview.

Placement Experience:

In IITB all students are placed except those who want to go for higher studies or have some other career plans. Last year IIT has decided not to disclose the packages and other details of the placement because some students feel disappointed when they compare their packages with other students. But a brief data is published by the placement cell at the end of the session.

I cleared the NET-JRF examination conducted by CSIR, India. The IIT Bombay has very talented faculty members and opting for IIT Bombay for me was a very good decision.

Admission:

I got admission to IIT Bombay through a written examination conducted by IIT Bombay. Before entering into the examination, everyone has to clear a national level fellowship exam like CSIR-JRF, UGC-JRF, GATE, or NBHM. Then institute will shortlist a few candidates for writing and interview. Finally selected candidates to get admission to the institute.
