IIT KGP is one of the best and top university in the country. It is competing with worlds best universities. In the record of IIT Kgp, the students were offered highest package (I think around 2 crores per annum) in the country at my time in the campus. I
Entrance Preview :
I have taken GATE entrance exam in Physics to pursue my higher education (M.Tech). I got All India 365 rank in GATE-2009. Based on the rank and score (Some IIT's take separate written test and interview), they make the merit list, Later we will be given chance to choose course among the courses for which we are eligible. In my case, I got "Materials Science and Engg" course in IIT Kharagpur. As I am interested too in the same course, I continued to do M.Tech.
Course Curriculum Overview :
M.Tech is of two years. In IIT KGP, the first year goes with course work and seconder year goes with project. They are two semesters in each year. In every semester, as part of course work, we study Five to Six subjects. Out of them, Three courses are compulsory and other two are elective (which can be taken in same or in the other dept.). Materials Science and Engg course mainly deals about the materials of all kinds (Metals, Semiconductors, Polymers, Bio, Nano..etc) and their study in all aspects.
Internships Opportunities :
In M.Tech, we don't have this internship program in the curriculum. It is usually for the B.Tech's. Many international companies like Google, Orkut, Cocacola.etc will recruit the students. They may offered from 20-50 K per month.
Placement Experience :
Its good. All most, all manufacturing industries requires the experts for the materials testing and characterization. In those area, we are offered placements. Many foreign companies visit the campus for the placements. At that time, nearly 60% in our batch were placed, the other shown interest do pursue their Ph.D. Many went to abroad for their Ph.D.The package was offered from different campaniles ranging from 6 lacs to 20 lacs..
College Events :
All the events in the campus are celebrated very grandly on par with international standards. Students takes part very actively. Technical fests are conducted by inviting worlds top eminent people in different fields. All other events also will go in the same.
Fee Structure And Facilities :
As M.Tech are offered MHRD scholarship, we can manage fee with scholarship. In my openion, it is feasible. Per semester (including mess bill), we need to pay around 25-30 thousands. As we get nearly Rs. 10,000 per month as stipend, we can manage.
Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :
Yes, one can take education loan from the banks in the IIT..Also you get merit scholarships from Govt's education dept's like MHRD..
Campus Life :
Excellent life in the campus. Every thing will go with highest standards in the IIT kgp. Gender ratio depends on the the merit list. when compares the life in campus, they are no such great restrictions except in the girl hostels. Other people or boys are strictly not allowed to girls hostels in IIT Kgp. But they can meet any in the campus. As all are Indian toppers and high intellectual, they have their own way of leading the life in the campus. No one influence / restricts / impose rules on the students.
Hostel Facilities :
Hostel facilities in IIT are very good. Coming to food, as different regions in the country have different food tastes, one may feel good, or may not. Some times, we have to adjust.
Alumni/Alumna :
Yes, there always be a seniors to guide the juniors.. IIT encourages it allot. We have freshers parties, farewell parties, all other departmental events. In every event, seniors always includes juniors and makes the events grand success.
Exam Structure :
It depends upon the faculty. He tests us in different ways like with assignments, surprise test, or viva, written exam etc.
Faculty :
We had excellent faculty in IIT Kgp.
