Remarks

The institute is well organised with full support from the students, staff and management committee.

Entrance Preview

The candidate must have cleared GATE examination before pursuing M. Tech. We had to clear one written exam followed by an oral exam in the institute. IIT Kanpur offers huge amount of flexibility and good infrastructure for research.

Course Curriculum Overview

4

The course content is very good. Apart from the conventional courses, e.g. core subjects, many advanced topics were part of curriculum. The Professors really work hard to make sure that the students actively participate in the discussion and get full exposure to the subject area. The major focus in the institute is in research. As a results, the approach of the teaching was also focused on research. Open book tests really reflected the overall understanding of the student.

Internships Opportunities

Yes, many companies approach our institute for getting student as intern. Many PSUs, Industrial and Academic R&D centres connect to our campus for the same. The time is generally during the month of May-July in each year. The stipend is generally around INR 2000.

Placement Experience

3.5

The placements are quite good here. Many companies visit our institute including Indian Oil Corporation Limited, Tata Consultancy Services, British Oxygen, Biocon, P&G, Ansys, Tata Steel R&D. The packages vary from INR 5 LPA to 20 LPA. Also, some start ups reach to our campus and offers high package to the students.

College Events

3.5

Many technical events e.g Techkriti, cultural festivals e.g. Antaragini are arranged in our institute. Many students from other colleges do visit during these events in our institute. The institute also get huge funding from the sponsors e.g. alumni, industry partners.

Fee Structure And Facilities

The fee structure is moderate. It is around 15000 per semester for PG students. It is feasible for PG students since they receive scholarships from Government of India and the tuition fee is just 2500 per student. The huge facility in the institute justify the fee structure.

Fees and Financial Aid

Good scholarships are provided by Government of India for the students to study in the institute. SBI and UBI provide loans to the students for supporting their study.

Campus Life

4.5

The campus life is very good. It has a calm and quite environment useful for study. Students actively participate in different form of extracurricular activities including football, cricket, badminton, tennis, gym, yoga, music, swimming, hockey, dance, drama etc.

Hostel Facilities

4.5

The hostels are very good and well maintained. Most of the PG hostels are single rooms without sharing. Ours is a full residential campus and sufficient rooms are available in the institute for the students. The mess bills and electricity bills are charged extra.

Alumni/Alumna

Our institute has a good alumni network. Regularly alumni meet is being organised by the institute. Our alumni are established in different part of the world. They provide support and guide as mentors to the students.

Exam Structure

The exams and labs truly reflect the overall understanding of the subject matter of the students. The grading is relative rather than absolute. One academic year constitutes two semester and 2 mid term examinations. The schedule is somewhat packed in nature.

Admission

The notification for PhD was released around April. The application had to be sent along with a demand draft. The selected candidates were asked for a written exam followed by an oral exam. The topics include engineering subjects, English and Mathematics. Two panels were constituted for taking the oral exam in parallel. The result was announced around two weeks after the exams. The arrangements were made by the teaching assistants and Professors. Accommodations were also made in pleasant environment during visit to the institute for the candidates. Later the selected candidates were given detailed instructions and suggestions regarding their stay in the institute and the documents needed during the orientation program in the institute.

Faculty

4

The faculties deserve kudos from the students. They try to make the subjects easy to the students. Sometimes they set different questions for different group of students in exams and quizzes. Presentations and term papers also become part of courses. The grading is relative rather than absolute, so even if the questions are set tough enough, there is always a provision to get grade A in any subject.

Course Curriculum Overview:

During my graduation I opted for B.com because I thought that what if I feel like going in the banking sector though I always had keen interest in Literature. After graduation I decided that I'll go for Masters in Literature from the same university and finally I got admitted too. There was flexibility and I got good guidance from the faculty members as I was skeptical of my choice but now see I am pursuing PhD which is a big deal.
