Ashish Jadhao's Review On IIT Bombay - Indian Institute Of Technology - [IITB], Mumbai

Entrance Preview :

To get into IIT, one needs to appear for the IIT JEE exam. But over the past few years exam has changed its pattern. Now the exam is conducted in 2 steps- Main and advanced. All the aspirants are allowed to write the main exam, out of which only 1.5 lakh are selected for advanced. I always wanted to get into IIT Bombay, being the best institute in India. I AIR was 1892 which was good enough to get into IIT Bombay.

Course Curriculum Overview :

The course makes sure that students get plenty of experimental exposure along with theory. Lab courses are designed such that research is promoted among the student community. Apart from this, students are encouraged to undertake a research project on a topic of interest to develop enthusiasm in research. Institute has world-class research labs which give an opportunity for advanced research.

Internships Opportunities :

Internship Cell is a body that looks after the internship of the student. it is a body consisting of students. The general stipend varies from company to company but it ranges from 10K to 80K per month. The internship is generally for 2 months in the summer.

Placement Experience :

Placement job opportunities are fairly good with varieties of sectors to explore. A sufficient amount of core firms come for recruitment along with consulting, banking, analytics. More than 1000 got placed last year with 300+ firms. Salary package varies depending upon the job profile. for IT/software it's around 20 Lakh, for consulting 15 lakh, and for core, it's 7-8 lakh.

College Events :

Institute has plenty of events celebrated in almost every field. Mood Indigo, tech fest, avenue are a few to name. They are one of the largest college festivals in India. Participation falls more than a lakh in 3 days. The budget of each fest is around 60-70 lakh.

Fee Structure And Facilities :

Fees have been increased in the recent past. It was 90k for tuition fee at my time but it's now 2 lakh for tuition fee and around 50 k for other expenses. But the government makes sure students get the loan at a good interest rate. Banks also promote their loan schemes at the time of admission.

Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :

MCM scholarship this scholarship is for those whose family income lies below the creamy layer. Also, students need to perform decent enough to get the scholarship. The scholarship takes care of your tuition fee which is 2 lakh now.

Campus Life :

The campus is one of the best in India with greenery all over the campus. For every 10 males, there is only 1 female student on the campus. A very large amount of extracurricular activities are conducted here. Clubs for every field exist here and they keep organizing events.

Hostel Facilities :

There is around 16 hostel on the campus with few being the very new and state of the art structures. All the students stay in the hostel which is on the campus. 2 students share the room and the final-year student gets a single room. Mess food is decent enough to eat and there are plenty of caters available on the campus where you can have good food.

Alumni/Alumna :

IIT Bombay has one of the best alumni networks in India. A large amount of funding comes from alumni for institute empowerment. Also annually 2 events are organized for students to get a chance to interact with their alumni.

Exam Structure :

The exam has a very common pattern here. for a course 4 exams are conducted. 2 quizzes, 1 mid sem, 1 end sem exam. Labs generally do not have mid sem and quizzes only lab end sem. The schedule during the end sem gets pretty hectic with all the exams back to back with no gap for study.

Admission :

The Process begins with the result declaration(around June end) of the JEE Advanced Exam which is within a month after the exam. Eligible candidates are asked to apply for admission through their portal. The preference list is to fill for the colleges. The first round of results is declared and students are asked to confirm their seats with a token amount(20k for me). This goes on for 2 more rounds.

Faculty :

All the faculty are Doctorate degree holders. They have an immense amount of experience in research with dozens of papers and publications in each faculty's experience. Most of them are teaching for more than a decade now which gives students the opportunity to learn from experienced minds.

Placement Experience:

Students become eligible for placements in their last year. There are many good companies that come and take part in the placement drives. Companies like TCS, Wipro, Accenture, Capgemini etc. come here for placements. The highest package in my understanding was about 30 lakhs as studied and searched by me. Many students secure packages above 3.5 lakhs in our college. About 90% of students get placed through the drives. My plan is also to take a good job from placement and then do my masters.

I got admission through CAP Round as directed by AICTE and DTE, the process is of 3 rounds until you choose a college and finalize it. Admission dates for FE students start from around May-June period as college opens at around 15 July approx. And Students need to bring all documents attested and submit the original 10th- 12th documents in the college and after completing the graduation.
