Amazing Place to Learn and Grow, Hands down the Best College.

Remarks :

BITS Goa is a beautiful place where you can learn and grow. The plethora of choices and diversity we have makes ones time spent at BITS worthwhile. Management is a bit strict but still the amount of fun the students have is just too good. If I get a chance to live in BITS Goa again I would not miss it.

Entrance Preview :

I gave my exams in 2012. I had given 4 major exams which were IITJEE, AIEEE (Now both have been combined into JEE-Mains and JEE-Advanced), MHCET (Maharashtra CET) and BITSAT. I scored decently well in AIEEE and got a rank of 4000. This made me eligible for any course I wanted in my home state NIT (Nagpur) and a few courses at the top 3 NITs (Trichi, Surathkal, Warangal). I had visited NIT for counselling and got Chemical Engineering at NIT Suratkal in the final Round. I also got the best course at ICT, Mumbai (Best college for Chemical Engineering) with my AIEEE Rank. I gave BITSAT and scored 290 in it. I was confident that I would get BITS Goa and Hyderabad (No good courses at Pilani). After my final rounds I had Chemical Engineering at BITS Goa. Finally I had Chemical Engineering at 3 of the best colleges. BITS Goa, ICT Mumbai and NIT-K. So after careful consideration and weighing the pros and cons of all three I decided to go for BITS Goa because of the brand value and a very positive review from my seniors. It is a decision I would cherish for rest of my life.

Course Curriculum Overview :

BITS Pilani has a very flexible course structure. Students have to complete a set of Disciplinary Courses (CDCs - Compulsory) and Electives. A single degree student has to complete a total of 13 electives- 3 Humanities, 5 Core and 5 Open (can be core or inter-disciplinary). This can vary with course as few courses have higher credit (or units) subjects in their CDCs. At the end a student at BITS has to complete the required number of credits (141 minimum) to graduate. A single degree student has an option of doing either an Internship (Practice School - PS) or Thesis in their final year (either semester). The courses cater to the interests of the student. They can do research based projects or learning oriented ones as per their interests. The atmosphere is very conducive for research with departments getting funding from major organisations. BITS Goa is equipped with state of the art labs with talented teachers to guide students wanting to do research. Taking about Chemical Engineering in particular, our department has some great labs which is the house various equipment which can be used for doing guided research. There are several electives offered at BITS and students have a choice to choose whatever they wish to do. The electives offered (at all 3 campuses) are as follows: Bio conversion Technology, Introduction to Environmental Biotechnolog, Downstream processing, Introduction to MEMS, Introduction to Nanoscience, Microfluidics and its application, Introduction to Biomedical Engineering, Nanotechnology for Renewable, Energy and Environment, Environmental Pollution Control, Process Equipment Design, Process Plant Safety, Transport Phenomena, Molecular and StatisticalThermodynamics, Process Plant Design Project I, Process Plant Design Project II, Modelling and Simulation in Chemical Engineering, Chemical Process Technology, Bio-chemical Engineering, Petroleum Refining Technology, Corrosion Engineering, Advanced Process Control, Fluidization Engineering, Petroleum Refining and Petrochemicals, Environmental Management Systems, Polymer Technology, Mathematical, Methods in Chemical Engineering, Introduction to Multiphase flow, Nuclear Engineering, Energy Conservation and Management, Introduction to Nanoscience Technology, Pulp & Paper Technology, Alternate Energy Resources, Petroleum Product Characterization, Advanced Separation Technology, Advanced Transport Phenomena, Electrochemical Engineering, Energy Systems Engineering, Chemical Process Optimization, Advanced Mass Transfer, Advanced Heat Transfer, Petroleum Reservoir Engineering, Petroleum Refinery Engineering, Petroleum Downstream Processing, Process Intensification, Energy Integration Analysis, Advanced Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics, Reaction Engineering, Polymer Chemistry. Not all electives are offered every semester. It varies with teacher availability and student registrations.

Internships Opportunities :

Students who opt for the practice school program have to do two internships. BITS takes the responsibility to provide these to its students. The first one would be after the second year in the summer break. The whole batch does it together and they have a choice to choose from a list of 300+ companies. The students fill in their preferences and according to their course and CGPA the company is assigned to them. The duration of this project is 2 months and no stipend is given to the students. Preference to their hometown is given. The second one is the most important one. Students do this in their fourth year. It is a semester long internship which can be done either in the seventh or the eighth semester. Again students choose from a pool of 300+ companies and allotment is done on the basis of multiple factors. CGPA, courses taken, stream and experience matters a lot in this internship. Stipend is given to the students with the lowest being 8000 and highest 60000 with an average of 20 k. No preference to hometown is given. This internship is crucial as there is an opportunity to get PPO (Pre Placement Offers) at the company. Students are intended to assume a significant role and are meant to work on developmental projects in the company. The primary aim is to prepare the students in their final year to the environment and industry standards similar to their eventual workplaces. Every student is assigned a PS mentor at the industry for guidance and monitoring progress. Apart from these two, the students also apply for internships in their 3rd year summer break. Companies which come for recruitment take interns sometimes.

Placement Experience :

BITS has its placement cycle in the 7th and 8th Semester (4th Year). There is a dedicated placement unit which takes up the responsibility to rope in recruiters. Most students who appear for placements secure a job at the end of the cycle. The college does its best to help its students but it all boils down to how well the student performs in their interview. List of past recruiters is as follows. Package offered varies year by year so I have tried to provide an ballpark figure for the companies I know about. accenture, akosha, vm ware -- 12 lpa, walmart labs -- 14 lpa, alfa, laval -- 4 lpa, amazon -- 28 lpa, anz grindlays, appspire, aptean, arista networks, arm, aruba networks, arvind internet, barclays technology center -- 8 lpa, belzabar software design india private limited, bharti softbank, bis research, bisquare bitmapper, bresmed, broadcom india pvt ltd bangalore, ca technologies, capillary technologies, carvale, chalk studios, chambal fertilizers -- 5 lpa, chrysler, cignex datamatix technology , cirel systems, cisco -- 12 lpa, code nation, codigami, concept2silicon, covidien, credit suisse -- 12 lpa, cubito, de shaw -- 18 lpa, deloitte, derrick petroleum, direct i, divami, software pvt ltd hyderabad, dow chemicals, ducere technologies pvt. ltd. hyderabad, dupont, duraline, eaton, ebay, edupristine, elgi, emc corp, ensci-a unit of weir minerals india, epic systems, equilibrium solutions, ericsson r&d, ernst & young mumbai, expicient, fab, fiat india, fiber link, finisar, malaysia, fiorano, flipkart online services -- 27 lpa, fmc technologies, fractal analytics -- 7 lpa, google -- 1 cr, freescale, ftrtil, funtoot, futures first, general electric – india.

Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :

Scholarships are given to deserving student by both BITS and other organisations. BITS has its merit scholarship and merit cum need scholarship. The 75% fee wavier merit scholarship is offered to students who are in the top 1% CGPA bracket (around 6 students). Many other students are offered 50% and 25% wavier too. The CGPA is cumulative and one must really work hard from first sem to bag this one. The second one the merit cum need (MCN) scholarship is offered to students with financial problems. Students are offered 75% , 50% and 25% wavier is given to students on basis of their scholarship. Students can also take the advantage of scholarships like INSPIRE if they take up a MSc course at BITS (dual degree with BE).

Hostel Facilities :

Being fully residential, separate hostels are provided for both girls and boys. The students are provided with single room accommodation, furnished with a bed, a wardrobe, a computer cum study table, a mirror and black granite shelf. Internet connection is provided in each room as a part of Project BITS Connect. Entertainment facilities are in the each hostel’s common room with TV and cable connection and with National and Local newspapers. There are a total of 14 hostels, 12 boys and 2 girls. Boys are not allowed enter the girls hostel and vice versa. The rooms are approx 100 square feet and is spacious enough for one person. It is cozy and makes one feel at home. There are a total of 180 rooms per hostel. The hostels are cleaned regularly and the toilets and bathrooms are decently clean. There is 24 x 7 hot water supply. Best part of hostel is the common room where student can chill out while playing games and watching TV. It is the place where most of the bonding happens. There are 2 messes (the A mess and the C Mess). Both are run by different caterers and students have a choice to select the mess each month. Different menu is followed in both the messes. 4 meals are served : Breakfast, Lunch, Snacks and Dinner at the mess. Menu is different for each day of the week and changes monthly. Breakfast has one main dish (poha, upma, idli, wada, chole bhature, parathas etc), egg/omelette, tea, coffee, bournvita, corn flakes. Lunch and dinner has Roti, 1 dry sabzi, 1 gravy sabzi, dal, rice, curd item, salad, sweet/drinks. Special menu is there for festivals. The food is really good and there is a separate student committee to ensure that the standards are maintained.

Exam Structure :

BITS Goa has three major exams per semester per subject. There is a Test - 1 (T1) in the second Month, Test - 2 (T2) in the 3rd Month and Comprehensive examination (Compere) before the breaks for Summer and Winter. Apart from these you have marks for quiz, assignments, projects, sometimes attendance, labs, presentations etc. It is up to the faculty to assign how much weight-age is given to each assessment component. Handouts are given out in the beginning with the break up mentioned. The timetable and exam dates are floated at the beginning of the semester and the student can decide what he wants and how he wants to phase out his exams. Test - 1 and Test - 2 span across a span of 1 week and the number of exams per day depends on the number of courses taken by the student. Each exam is 1 hour long. There are 5 time slots for T1 and T2: 8.30 - 9.30 , 10.30 - 11.30 , 12 - 1, 2 - 3 and 4 - 5. Students generally have 6 - 7 exams and may get leaves in between. Sometimes if the student decide to over load himself, he may even end up with 3 exams on a day with back to back exams. But mostly core subjects are spaced out well and it all depends on how many subjects the student take. T1 and T2 generally have equal weight-age up to 20% (can be more). They only have a part of the syllabus. Comprehensive exam or compere as we called them are the most important ones in which we are evaluated on the whole course syllabus. The exams are 3 hours each and span across 15 days. Students rarely have 2 exams on a day, but again it depends on their choice. There are study breaks in between exams. The weight-age for this is around 40%. The other components have up to 20% weight-age. In case a student is unable to attend an exam they can request for a make-up and this is granted only for genuine cases.

Faculty :

Faculty at BITS are highly qualified with most of them having doctorates. There are various designations: Lecturer, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Professors. They go through a rigorous selection process with multiple rounds of shortlisting and interviews. They progress with experience and publications. The faculty are assigned courses that they are familiar with. Most of the teachers are passionate about teaching and research. They help the students in times of need by giving invaluable guidance and support. A professor's job is multi-dimensional. They have do quality research, and deliver quality lectures. Delivering lectures itself constitutes knowing the subject well, and good teaching skills. Thus, a professor is much more than a teacher. Viewed from this perceptive, calling someone good or bad becomes a matter of opinions, except in some cases. The faculty offer projects under them in the topics which either they are working on or are mentoring. If the students have any particular interest they can approach the faculty and suggest projects. They will surely consider your request and float that topic if they have the time and resources to mentor you. Few professors also have industry experience which comes in handy while teaching difficult concepts. They make sure they explain the topics with relevant examples and ensure that the student is able to fully grasp the concepts. Most faculty are also assigned an administrative role which they do along with their jobs. Course grading vary from faculty to faculty and it is given on a relative scale. So in short BITS houses some of the most brilliant faculty who are truly multi-faceted.

Final students are eligible for placements. Companies such as turtle mint, findem, Nokia, IFB, Samsung, Adani power, HDFC Bank, Tesco, Upskill, ONGC, Jio, and many more. Last year almost everyone got placed. Average package is 10 LPA. This year though placements were not as expected because of economic depression. Even after the placements, lay offs have become common. Hence to cope up with the competition we need to keep upskilling.

Placement Experience:

IIT Goa offers campus placements to its students. Students become eligible for campus placements in their final year of study, i.e., in the 7th or 8th semester. Several reputed companies visit IIT Goa for campus placements, including Amazon, Microsoft, Goldman Sachs, IBM, Tata Steel, Larsen & Toubro, Adani Power, etc. Higher placements offer is of 1.2cr and average placement offers are16-25 lac per annum. The percentage of students getting placed during campus placements at IIT Goa is quite high, with around 90% of students getting placed every year. The remaining students generally opt for higher studies or pursue entrepreneurship. In case no campus placement is offered, students can explore other options for employability, such as applying for jobs through job portals, professional networking sites, or by directly contacting companies. They can also consider pursuing higher education or research in their field of interest or starting their own business.
