Student's Review On Tata Institute Of Social Sciences - [TISS], Guwahati

Remarks :

This programme I am enrolled provides an wide array of subjects ranging from basic maths, statistics, hindi/Assamese (option is provided between the local language and hindi) and all disciplines that come under social science. Tata Institute of Social Science is one of the premiere social science institute in India with renowned faculty.

Course Curriculum Overview :

TISS has a great selection of syllabus which is updated frequently. The subjects are relevant to today's environment, although there is no subject of geography even though it comes under social sciences. The faculty is friendly and helpful but the administration overall is not up to the level.

Internships Opportunities :

During the second year of bachelors, there is a compulsory internship to be done by all students. I interned in Prantakatha, an NGO based in Kolkata. Taking of stipend was prohibited.

Placement Experience :

The institute provides on campus placements but only for post graduate students. As the institute is of social sciences a lot of NGOs come for jobs. Apart from NGOs, MNCs like wipro, hcl have also come.

College Events :

All funds are received from TISS mumbai campus, which is the main administrative branch. Hence, there is a lot of problem when it comes to organizing extra curricular activities as we have to wait for the approval and funding from Tiss mumbai.

Campus Life :

Our campus is still in the process of building, it is yet to be completed and might take another year or two to be a full fledged one. Hostel was outside the campus and has been recently shifted inside the campus.

Hostel Facilities :

The hostel has been recently shifted inside the campus and is fairly new and in good condition. It hs six floors with a terrace prohibited for students. A flat consisting of 4 rooms and two washrooms is provided to be shared among seven/eight girls. Since, boys are numerically less in the institute a flat might be given to share among 4/5 boys only. The dining room is common for both boys and girls is located in the ground floor. One Elevator for girls hostel and one for boys is provided.

Course Curriculum Overview:

I chose philosophy as my major course as I want to learn about the things we experienced and the way they are the curriculum prepares me well enough to overcome in my day-to-day life I haven't faced any need for improvement in the teaching method. Exams were indeed a difficult task as a student, we hardly had a week to prepare ourselves for the examination.

Course Curriculum Overview:

history is interlinked with all subjects. It describes the social formation, decision and mistakes that shapes the world. it gives moral values and mistakes that shouldn't be carried out again. The subject is very interesting and should be considered once.

I always has a keen interest in history and being a government funded college it was my first choice and more than the curriculum , it was the placement of the college that mattered the most for me . We have one sessional 30 marks and one final exam 80marks

Course Curriculum Overview:

I chose BA because of peer pressure, but it wasn't so bad because you can go in any direction. Real world application isn't a thing of the course. But it can help you if you want to study further. Classes have digital boards, that's a plus. Each semester consists of 1 sessional exam and 1 final exam.

Course Curriculum Overview:

My course is of 3 year long duration. There's a total of 14 papers and each semester we get specific papers according to our sem ( ex: sociology of religion, sociology of gender, kingship, stratification, etc.) + we have a Generic subject. With generic in every semester we had a compulsory subject with our honors and Generic, indeed it was something new that we learned.

Course Curriculum Overview:

About the course curriculum, I still wonder why they have to put science subjects on the course curriculum of arts students. They would say it's a basic course but it is definitely not. Those arts students came there to learn their main subjects. I think it is unnecessary to put sc subjects there plus it is not basic. Otherwise the main subjects' curriculum is pretty well organised and planned.

Course Curriculum Overview:

I like the subject english that is why I chose this course, I'm studying ba in English and i will do post graduation in also english, but in our department student teacher relationship is not good enough, I can't communicate with my department's professor as much. The other problem is last year we gave 3 semesters exams together in a year which should be held after 6months, I would like to request the authorities to give concern about that.
