Remarks :
The overall life at IIT Roorkee is amazing and so are the opportunities as compared to other colleges. The students are brilliant and competitive and that brings the best out of students. The job opportunities are also good and so are the chances of getting admission in to universities of the world. The faculty and course work is where it needs to improve. The professors are not as enthusiastic and the subjects are not interesting. Overall it is a good place to spend four years.
Course Curriculum Overview :
the course curriculum is a bit of old fashioned. The same courses are being taught for the past 20 years. So students find it difficult to get exposure to present developments in the field. This also results in low placement chances unless the student learns through online courses or prepares by himself. Exams are exhaustive, as in everything taught in class will appear in exams. But given the course structure is a bit old examination papers are often found repetitive.
Placement Experience :
IITs are known for their placement records so IIT Roorkee has a very good record of placements. Since students prepare themselves for four years and are the best brains of India they generally get whopping offers from companies and secure good jobs. The companies also find it beneficial to provide internships for pre-final year students. The average stipend is about 40,000 per month
College Events :
There are lots of events that happen in College ranging from cultural fests like Thomso to technical fests like Cognizance. The sports fest is also held annually like Sangram. Apart from that social summits are also held. The entrepreneurship cell also organizes an annual entrepreneurial summit. There is also the annual exhibition of robotics and tech projects under the event Srishti which is organized by the students club. Apart from all these guest lectures, monthly performances, etc keep happening throughout the year.
Fee Structure And Facilities :
The fee structure is a bit odd and is a burden for middle-class families. It goes like this: For annual income less than 1lc-no tuition fee for annual income between 1-5lc -1/3 of tuition fee For greater than 5lc-full fees. which is almost 2,70,000 rs per year. It is not feasible for students whose family income lies just above 5lc.
Loan/ Scholarship Provisions :
There are loans offered by SBI however. Not many students prefer to take loans, unlike the USA. But few do. And whoever wants to take loans there are facilities available as the banks provide loans on less percentage for students.
Campus Life :
The extracurriculars are very good here. There are facilities for most of the sports like football, cricket, tennis, swimming, volleyball, basketball, etc. There are other facilities like students club which provides many services like chess, foosball, table tennis, snooker etc.
Alumni/Alumna :
The Alumni network in IITs is very powerful and influential. So in IIT Roorkee, many us can reach out to successful alumni for help. Moreover, there are groups in college that keep inviting our alumni to the college so that students can learn from them.
Admission :
IIT Roorkee is among the top 6 IITs, the premier institute of technology in India. Admission in undergraduate studies is held through a nationwide entrance examination known as JEE (joint entrance examination). It is a two-stage exam known as the toughest exam at the higher secondary level. Almost 1000000 students appear and among them, 10000 get admission in IITs.After clearing the entrance college choices are filled based on the rank secured. I secured a rank if 4145 so I chose civil engineering in IIT Roorkee.
Faculty :
The faculty of IITR is not as much help as one would wish it to be. They might have a very good research background but often it is found that they don't care much about undergraduates largely because they know most of them will not go into academia but will choose job at the end of the course. As I have heard it from seniors they, however, pay close attention to PHD and graduate students.
