What should I choose, NSUT Electrical or IIT Kharagpur Food and agriculture Engineering?

SG
Senjuti Gupta Posted On : March 27th, 2023
studied at IIT Kgp

For your information, the Agriculture Department of IIT Kharagpur itself is around 300 acres whereas the entire IIT Delhi is sightless less than 400 acres. The huge area of IIT KGP is definitely not a boon and might actually work against you. Moreover, it’s not a brainer that Electrical Engineering seems to be a better option than Agriculture Engineering unless you have an interest in the latter. NSUT itself is a pretty decent institute and is much in demand because of its central location.

In short, I recommend you to join IIT Kharagpur (Agriculture) only under 2 circumstances,

  • You are genuinely interested in the field and want it to pursue a career in the same
  • You want to pursue higher studies in foreign studies.

For this, the IIT tag will be much more useful than NSUT. The entire answer is based on my opinion only and not on any data.

Internships at IIT Kharagpur are usually research based on a specific topic. To apply for research internships, check the listed steps first:

  • Firstly choose a good topic for research and study it deeply.
  • Once you have chosen a topic, visit the official website of IIT KGP and go to the faculty section. Look into the research work of the faculty of every department. Look for research work that matches your area of interest.
  • Once you find that faculty, contact him/her through email and send your cover letter.

Additional tips would be to write a very good cover letter and have a good academic background to get a good internship offer.

How is the life of PhD student at IIT Kharagpur?

AA
Aishwarya Anand Posted On : March 27th, 2023
Ph. D. from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (IIT KGP)

I guess you are enquiring about the research culture of IIT Kharagpur rather than the life of a Ph.D. student as his/her life is based on research only.

  • A typical Ph.D. student is always invested in some or other research work like INDEST, SCOPUS, and Publications.
  • The research work depends largely on the particular department and the faculty advisor.
  • Each research student is given a research problem on which he works and submits good-quality publications after which his Ph.D. is given.
  • Some students are given the opportunity to explore and choose a research topic on their own. These students are guided by friendly faculty advisors who are not only excellent in their field but also guide you throughout the journey.
  • Usually it takes more than 4 years to obtain a Ph.D. in a Science or Social Science department whereas less than 4 years in an Engineering department.

It is not necessary to be confined within the walls of your department lab as a Ph.D. student. Some choose the relaxed way and enjoy their campus life to the fullest as well.

What are the benefits of doing minor in IIT KHARAGPUR?

AS

Before we discuss the benefits of doing minor in IIT, let’s get a clear picture of what exactly a minor is. Minors are electives chosen by people who are interested in pursuing research in any particular field of interest in postgraduate education. This particular elective is usually not a part of the major and hence it is called a minor.

For instance, if you belong to the Department of mechanical engineering but are willing to conduct some research in computer science in postgraduate education, then a minor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering is a good option.

Some rules pertaining to selecting a minor in your discipline, RS follows discipline:

  • The department would release a list of subjects from its curriculum and prescribe a requirement for minors taking six subjects (18-24 contact hours plus 3-9 hours of laboratory) from this list. This list includes the right blend of core and electives.
  • If a student of another discipline in course of his/her studies registers in a set of subjects that constitute the requirement for a minor, passes in all of these subjects, and scores a minimum grade point average of 6.00 then he/she earns a minor in IIT Kharagpur 6 Regulations: Undergraduate Programme that discipline.
  • A student may cover these six subjects as either a depth subject, a breadth subject, or as additional credits. However, he/she has to take at least three subjects as additional credits to earn a minor.
  • The opportunity of acquiring additional credits and minor would be available to the students of all degrees and disciplines. In the case of students of the dual degree program requirements for earning a minor have to be fulfilled within the 8th semester.
  • Except for the students of Dual Degree, all others students enrolled under 5-Year courses, like Integrated Page on M. and B.Arch. (Hons.) be permitted to pursue minors in other disciplines/branches offered by other departments/Centre in disciplines like Engineering and Science up to their 10th Semester.

Steps to get a minor are as follows

  • Registration for minors takes place in the beginning of the fifth semester.
  • The students must necessarily have 8+ CGPA by the end of the fourth semester. This is possible by completing all the credits and having zero backlogs.

What are the things that you want to change in IIT Kharagpur based on an academic perspective?

AJ
Advait Joshi Posted On : March 27th, 2023
Lives in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India

My sister was a student at IIT Kharagpur and had a few suggestions that could be made to improve the academic situation of the Institute.

  • BS/EVS: Either the BS/EVS should be removed from the compulsory list of the course that should be taught in the first semester year. A student in his final year is already busy preparing for his internships and has no time for extra subjects. Moreover, the course is very demanding with everchanging professors and a vast curriculum.
  • Slide reading: The use of slides has resulted in the lack of touch of blackboard teaching. Students pay little attention to slides especially when these slides are played without any explanation. Slides are just meant for animations, statistics, pictorial diagrams, structures, and maybe examples. The entire syllabus should be taught over slides.
  • English Communication: There is little focus on English commutation between students and professors or even among peers.
  • Inequality of marks: Different TAs give different marks and thus students belonging to different groups suffer as a result. This means that if you belong to a group that has a rude TA then you will suffer while others belonging to a group with a lenient TA, will end up scoring more irrespective of their abilities.

If such changes are made then definitely the few loopholes in the academic efficiency of the Institute can be taken care of.

What is the chance of upgrading your branch in IIT Kharagpur?

PG
Pratik Gandhi Posted On : March 27th, 2023
B.Tech. CSE, IIT Bombay

Most IITs have the option of branch change in the middle of the year. IIT Madras and IIT Kanpur have very limited seats for branch change that too at the end of the first and second year only.

IITs have adopted this strategy to ensure students study the branch that matched their preferences only.

According to a report, around 10% of a particular branch get the opportunity to switch branches. The linear ranking system of students that evaluates the students based on performance has resulted in tough competition thereby the branches being allocated on the basis of scores. The vacancies as the result of these strict evaluations are then filled by students who opt for branch change. These branch changes are made on the basis of performance only.

IIT Kanpur is way ahead of other IITs and allows branch change even after 2 years. Additionally, students are allowed to pursue a major under which 10 courses for another stream can be chosen apart from a minor. This trend is highly observed among mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and computer science streams. The ultimate purpose is to let students study the subject that intrigues them and becomes a source of motivation to perform better.

What is your IIT Kharagpur PhD experience?

AA
Aishwarya Anand Posted On : March 27th, 2023
Ph. D. from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (IIT KGP)

A typical Ph.D. student is expected to have been trained in conducting and researching projects when he is ready to get a Ph.D. after conducting enough research under a faculty advisor.

The Ph.D. degree is given by an expert from an extremely reputed industry and he is under no obligation to give the degree unless he considers the researcher's work worthy of a Ph.D. degree. Therefore there is no relaxation and one has to give it all to get a Ph.D. and satisfy the person evaluating his work. For some, this might be easy while for some it may take years.

Ph.D. students have to conduct thorough research on the given topic and go through the publications of experts. They can derive their own opinions from these works or point out some flaws and remedies for the same.

The entire process of obtaining a Ph.D. degree has a number of obstacles and sometimes things look too forlorn and some even give up. But trust me the result is worth the effort and a Ph.D. can become your savior for a lifetime.
