This answer can be answered in 2 aspects; branch wise and Institute wise.
Branch-wise, ECE is way ahead of Manufacturing Science and Engineering and has a wider scope after graduation. ECE students are hired by both electronics and software companies. Moreover, ECE is a major stream whereas Manufacturing is just a sub-stream under Mechanical Engineering.
Specifically talking about colleges only, I would suggest you choose IIT KGP which has a stronger brand name and legacy than BITS Pilani Hyderabad. Its reputation is not just limited to India and has great scope outside India as well. It gets better and more companies than BITS during campus placements.
One major point of difference is the location of both institutes. Hyderabad has a much superior location than IIT Kharagpur thus offering better college life and exposure. IIT KGP is remotely located and lacks the necessary industry touch and exposure.
You have to travel long distances just to eat or do shopping. You will miss out on city life and the opportunities it has to offer. While the campus is great, you have to stay inside as the world outside is desolate. Spending 4 years without much exposure might limit your opportunities.
Hyderabad on the other hand has everything city life has to offer apart from being a major IT hub. This makes it possible to apply for campus jobs as well which is not possible in the case of IIT KGP.
In the end, it’s you who has to make a decision. Go where your heart is inclined the most be it ECE or Manufacturing at IIT or BITS. Just make sure to make a decision that will not make you regret it later.
One of my friends is working in the Analytics Industry for the pasts 4 years and has given enough placement interviews in the same sectors to have a great experience. I asked him about the preparation for the Data Analytics interview. He told me that their placements are quite similar to other companies and comprise: 1 aptitude test and 3 interviews; out of these 2 are technical and one HR
Aptitude test: This written test is very similar to a CAT exam and other exams of easy to medium level of difficulty. Anyone who is preparing for CAT or GMAT would easily clear this test with an additional focus on any aptitude book.
Technical Interview: These interviews come under 3 headings
Resume projects: Preparing for this interview is easy and requires a good resume that can be built in multiple ways. You can take up data projects with R and Python which will make your resume appear better. You will have a considerable advantage over those who lack such projects.
For guesstimates and case interviews: These interviews require preparation that is similar to other interviews.
Based on the approach companies take while selecting candidates, you can prepare accordingly and ace all the interviews.
I think I am qualified to answer this question as I graduated from IIT Kharagpur Geology and Geophysics department and I am working for ARM Group in the Middle East.
You should choose IIT Kharagpur due to following reasons:-
MTech placements for the ECE branch at IIT Kharagpur depend a lot on your specialization.
Those under VLSI and VIPES get placed with great packages and there are almost cent percent placements for them. VLSI students are usually offered core jobs in contrast to VIPES which offers both core and non-core jobs. There are a lot of software profiles offered to VIPES students.
Communication also has decent placements but not the same certainty as VLSI. Here companies like Qualcomm come for placements and some even are offered software profilers
The choice of college and branch totally depends on your inclination and career prospects. Yet, a few pointers you might consider
For MBA/ non-core jobs/Startups: IIT Delhi Textile is the best choice if you are looking for any 3 of these options. Its excellent location provides enough exposure to give you access to unimaginable opportunities. Many events hosted by industry experts, CEOs of big companies, and successful entrepreneurs will give a better insight into the startup culture. Moreover, students preparing for competing exams can easily access coaching centers nearby.
Research in Biotechnology: If you are interested in research in general or Biotechnology specifically, then the Biotechnology at KGP is an excellent choice. It is one of the most demanding fields in terms of research and general growth. With a good CGPA, you can find a research internship or you can apply for MS or Ph.D. Even job opportunities are plentiful.
Campus: IIT Delhi is better because of its small size and location
Lastly, Engineering Physics from IIT Guwahati should be considered only if you are genuinely passionate about Physics and want to pursue a research career in the same. The curriculum comprises high-tech mathematical concepts and is a good option to pursue a career in economics and computer science.
There are two scenarios under which this can be discussed.
IIT KGP: As far as the IIT Kharagpur Integrated MSc is concerned, I will be brutally honest in letting you know that IIT KGP is not the right place to pursue Physics. This is just not my opinion but the opinion of many alumni and professors of the Institute itself. The academic environment and exposure are not good for learning physics.
IIT Kanpur: While some may say that there is a certain bias between core Engineering students and physics students, IIT Kanpur still is the best when it comes to imparting Physics education. It offers the right opportunities and exposure required for this program.
IISER: These are usually research-oriented and the education imparted here lays great emphasis on basic sciences. Great exposure in the form of research work is offered to make the program a high-quality one. The students attend seminars and talks to discuss the ongoing research in various fields giving a practical approach to the entire curriculum. The research work is more extensive than that of other institutes.
Your top two choices should be IIT Kanpur and IISER. If you are going for the latter, make sure you look into the research work done by the professors there. But if you are after placements, go for IITs.
It's always a good idea to research and speak with current students or alumni to get a better sense of what a program is like. Additionally, it is important to consider whether the program aligns with your career goals and interests.
Unlike others, my brother was to leave home and embark on a new journey of college life at IIT Kharagpur. He did not expect much academically and all he cared for was the free life he was about to live. He wasn’t much interested in extracurricular activities and just wanted to explore new things.
He spent the entire 4 years creating memories, learning new things and exploring the campus. During his time at IIT KGP, he had his days of disappointments as well as excitement and there were so many rollercoaster events that made his college life very happening.
All this came to a sudden halt when college life ended and he started working and had a taste of real life. It took away all the freedom and fun and made him stuck to his computer forever. No matter how good your job is, at one point you are bound to feel restricted in contrast to the free college life you spent.
Your happiness depends somehow on how much freedom you have and once your college life is over you lose that freedom considerably making happiness a luxury only a few can afford.
When choosing your desired colleges, it is recommended to consider the following options in the given order:
It is important to consider each option carefully and choose the one that best fits your needs and career goals. Take your time, do your research, and make an informed decision.
It’s better to talk about both institutes individually to make a more informed decision.
IIT Kharagpur offers a 5-year Integrated M.Sc in Economics and has a wide scope today. There are many advantages to being a part of the IIT KGP family
Similarly, BITS Hyderabad too offers an integrated MSc degree in Economics. Additionally, you can add an extra major (BE course) in your first year, but this is optional. The institute has no lucrative points apart from the fact that it is a decent Engineering college sought by those who are unable to make it into IITs.
Personally, I would suggest you go for an IIT because of the brand name and legacy. You won’t regret this decision later because of the IIT Tag that will already come to your rescue.
Yes, it’s not that difficult to secure a 9.8 CGPA in IIT Kharagpur, especially in the first year. The entire batch has a strength of 10-15, students are easily able to touch the 9.5+ mark.
As you will move further, your subjects will become complicated and then you will have to depend on classes and professors.
