Dr. Deepti G.R. is an accomplished academic professional with a diverse educational background and extensive research and teaching experience. She currently serves as an Assistant Professor and Head of the Department of Zoology at Bishop Moore College in Mavelikara, Kerala, India. Dr. Deepti holds a Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of Kerala, specializing in the field of Biodiversity Associated with the bycatch of Bottom Trawlers operating from Sakthikulangara and Neendakara Fishing Harbors, Kerala. Being the head of the zoology Department, what are your roles and responsibilities towards the students?

Making sure that the students get the most out of the curriculum is my top priority as the head of the zoology branch. My dedication is to create a supportive and inspiring environment in which college students can attain their complete potential, both academically and personally. As part of my activity, tracking each pupil's development is crucial because it allows me to see regions that would need more help or paths. My goal is to establish an environment wherein college students feel comfortable enough to ask for assistance or voice their concerns by encouraging an experience of networking and open communication. My remaining goal is to assist college students' whole development and well-being whilst also equipping them with the statistics and competencies essential to excel in their academic endeavors and beyond.


How do you tend to establish healthy relations with the students and fellow faculty?

Keeping student and faculty relationships pleasant is essential to creating a welcoming and encouraging learning environment. We work hard to establish a welcoming environment in our department where students can communicate with faculty members without feeling awkward. To foster open communication and accessibility, we actively work to reduce any gaps or barriers that may exist between students and teachers. We attentively listen to the worries, suggestions, and criticism of every kid because we respect their viewpoint. We understand the value of meeting the unique needs and experiences of our students as a department with a high proportion of female staff members and female students. Our department places awesome emphasis on presenting women with the aid and possibility they need to achieve both academic and private fulfillment. We actively employ a variety of tactics to better tailor the curriculum to the needs of the pupils Using revolutionary teaching strategies and approaches that encourage student participation and lively studying is one way. Our objective is to transcend traditional lecture-fashion coaching by supplying avenues for students to engage in dialogues, cooperative gaining of knowledge, and hands-on schooling. Additionally, we support students in doing research and projects that complement the revised curriculum. This stimulates their curiosity and encourages independent learning by allowing children to investigate and go deeper into particular areas of interest. We understand the importance of bridging the gap between academic knowledge and real-world applications. To achieve this, we actively seek opportunities to integrate practical components into our teaching methods. We encourage students to engage in internships, industry projects, or research collaborations. These opportunities allow them to gain hands-on experience, develop practical skills, and establish connections within the industry. We actively support and guide students in seeking such experiences, both within the university and through external partnerships. While we recognize that the syllabus is primarily determined by the university, we make efforts to stay informed about updates and changes. We adapt our teaching methodologies and materials accordingly to align with any industry-relevant updates. Additionally, we encourage students to pursue certificate courses or programs offered by external institutions that specifically cater to industry-oriented skills. These additional courses supplement the university curriculum and provide practical knowledge that complements their academic learning.


What are your views on the placements and higher education of the students from your department, or how does your department prepare students for higher education?

Our Department of Zoology offers excellent placement and postsecondary education opportunities to its students. Even though some students may have preconceived notions or uncertainties about the study of zoology at first, as they advance through their education, we have seen a noticeable shift in their perspectives and future employment opportunities. Our department gives students a solid foundation in zoology and allied subjects, actively preparing them for further education. We offer an intensive curriculum overlaying an extensive variety of topics, along with research, practical skills, and theoretical know-how. This equips students to undertake postgraduate studies in quite a few zoology-related fields, such as animal behavior, ecology, conservation biology, genetics, and more. Our department has installed numerous tasks and obligations to offer students the chance to hone their abilities and tackle actual global issues. Through golf equipment and organizations such as the National Service Scheme (NSS) or the National Cadet Corps (NCC), university students can participate in extracurricular sports activities. These organizations, in which lots of our students actively participate, provide a forum for teamwork and private improvement, similar to encouraging management and community involvement. In addition, extracurricular interest participation is mandated by the university curriculum. We keep a close eye on, the manual, and offer steering to children who're obsessed with extracurricular sports past taking a look at the room. We encourage and mentor college students to comply with their passions in addition to their instructional interests, whether they be in the arts, athletics, or some other location. Fish farming, aquaponics, vermicomposting, mushroom cultivation, and beekeeping are some of these pursuits. What are the challenges you faced or are facing to uplift the quality of education in your department?

Indeed, an issue that many schools and departments are confronting is the declining trend in student enrollment in traditional courses. To keep our department and college well-regarded, we must take on this task and keep delivering quality work. Our department is still dedicated to providing excellent instruction and making sure that our students achieve the highest results to address this issue. To make learning interesting and applicable, we are always working to improve our curricula, instructional strategies, and tools. We also put a lot of effort into publicizing the accomplishments and success tales of our former pupils and graduates. This entails showcasing their achievements in extracurricular activities, research, and academia. For our department, the declining trend in the number of students enrolling in traditional courses is a difficulty. But we're determined to meet this problem head-on by always enhancing our instructional strategies, sharing success stories, encouraging teamwork, and offering thorough counseling support. We hope to draw and keep students who will add to the prosperity and standing of our department and college by focusing on quality and highlighting the worth and advantages of our offerings field.
