Dr. Rajeev Ranjan is currently working as an Associate Professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department of RKDF University, Ranchi. Dr. Rajeev Ranjan obtained his Ph.D and M.Tech from NIT Jamshedpur and BIT Sindri respectively. His areas of research interest are Solar Energy, Solar air Heaters, Renewable Energy, CFD, Continuous Casting in Steel. In his outreach activities, he conducted workshops, expert lecturers, delivered lectures as resource person in engineering institutes. He was convenor of the National and International Conference. Apart from this, he is also well versed with application of software like ANSYS Fluent ,Matlab in his research field. He is a member of the International Association of Engineers.

What are some valuable insights of the program that you are offering at your University?

Some Valuable insights of the Department of Engineering Program i.e. B.Tech (Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical & Electronics Engineering & Computer Science Engineering): It is an undergraduate engineering degree of four years course. This Programme provides training which includes practical industries orientation towards industrial practices and comprehensive executive skill development training. The objective of the programme is to give students insight into coupling theoretical knowledge imparted in class, with intensive exposure to industry, enhancing skills of to-be engineering for designing, manufacturing, and maintenance, construction project management, software engineering etc). Diploma (Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical & Electronics Engineering & Computer Science Engineering) Diploma is a course designed for students who wish to opt for a course after Class 10. The students after completing the courses will popularly be called Diploma Engineers. The overall end objective is to produce industry oriented competent manpower to sail far and soar high not only in the state but throughout the Abroad.


How do you tend to build an industry connection with the programs that you offer in your University?

The department has well equipped laboratories required for Diploma and undergraduate B.Tech Programme. The important laboratories include: Strength of Materials, Applied Mechanics, Heat Engine, Hydraulics, Heat and Mass Transfer, Solar Energy, Industrial Engineering Lab etc. The department has a huge workshop consisting of various units like Carpentry, Smithy, Foundry, Machine Shop, Computer Lab, Control System Lab, Microprocessor Lab, Electrical Machines Lab, Instrumentation Lab, Circuit Lab, Electrical Workshop. The department also offers adequate facilities for R&D work and thus provides a vital impetus in growth of the state.


What were the Challenges that you faced while inculcating these programs in your curriculum?

For successful implementation of the curriculum, the university has formed various departments to enhance quality of services and ensure smooth implementation of its academic program. The Academic Affairs Unit is a unit directly under the Vice Chancellor focusing on academic affairs.

Have you introduced any new programs in the University? If yes, please give us a brief highlight of the same. If not then do you plan on introducing any?

Yes. B.Tech in Mining Engineering and 3 year Diploma in Mining Engineering. The exploration of natural resources through mining activities have become increasingly important for countries like India, which depend on natural resources for their rising energy needs. Minerals are an important ingredient in everyday life, hence its production and development is essential. For this reason, mining engineers are in huge demand in both India and abroad. Mining industry is playing a major role in contributing to the GDP of India. In today's time, the mining sector has the potential to grow its share in GDP from about 5-6 percent per year down the line. Mining engineers are required to have multiple skills that majorly include good problem-solving techniques.


How do you try to bring in a practical approach towards the subject and make it industry oriented?

The University offers students services like counseling placement training support, personality grooming and Plant Visit/ Corporate Lectures/ Summer Training/ Seminar/ Project Report/ Continuous Evaluation/ Publication/ Pre- placement Talk/ for final Placement. The University undertakes to publish all the Research Articles presented in the conferences in the form of Book Proceeding. The University conducts 01 International conference and 05 National conferences. Further, the Student Information Bulletin familiarizes us with various activities like rules & regulations of the institute, academic calendar, alumni club, and sports. To develop the conceptual skills, to identify & formulate and solve problems innovatively, students undertake Case Studies and Simulation Exercises. Cases are generously used in illustrating the contextual setting and information adequacy which characterizes situations in fields of MIS, SAD, SE and developing computer application skills. Case analysis develops decision making skills under simulated conditions and highlights the fact that the real situations are more complex than what the students learn in theory class viz. Debate/ Role Play/ Business Games/ PDPs/ Aptitude & Tech. Skill Dev./ Soft Skills Development/ Value Aided Courses/ Concept Classes/ Workshops/ Industrial Talk.


Being the Principle of RKDF University, Ranchi, what is your philosophy of leadership?

Leadership is not gender specific, it is nurtured with age and experience and can be developed through mentoring and training. It is indeed a privilege for me to lead this wonderful team of RKDF University, Ranchi as its captain, being fully aware of the fact that the captain is only as the team. What are some of the biggest challenges you see, both for higher education in general and for RKDF University, Ranchi specially?

In the wake of covid-19 the times have become challenging for us .We have been thrown face to face with situations that had never been heard or experienced before. The Pandemic has affected all our regular activities and forced us to seek new methods and strategies for survival and continue with the onward of progress. The mechanism for the continuity of education has been deeply impacted and we have been forced to move on to the virtual platforms for the dissemination of knowledge. Throughout these times, we have put forward our best discussions and undertaken actions that were considered best for our students and faculty members.

How does the curriculum of the RKDF University, Ranchi ensure the best practice of industry?

We have a large alumni group at our university. We can draw on the members interested to be involved in curriculum design. Secondly, we deliver a unit in second and third year called Work Integrated Learning which enables undergraduate students to be placed in industry for 6-8 weeks to undertake industry focused projects. The students are supervised by an industry supervisor and an academic who visits the student on a regular basis. The supervisors are involved in developing the Work Integrated Learning Curriculum and assessment. Thirdly, we have lecturers that are not academics in a traditional sense but have come from industry to teach at university and are called Professors.


With the competition so high, how do you guide your students to survive in such a competitive scenario?

In the present era globalization, quality has become a dominant factor of success in every sector of the economy and this includes quality in the provision of education.
