Dr. Rekha P.G is an Assistant Professor and the Head of the Department of the Post Graduate and Research Department of Commerce at The Cochin College. She is a graduate of Commerce with a Cost Accounting specialisation from St.Teresas College and a post-graduate in Finance and Taxation from Vidyaniketan. She also holds a Bachelor of Education Degree and a Diploma in Export Management. Having qualified for the National Eligibility Test (NET in Commerce), Dr. Rekha completed her PhD in “A Study on the Effectiveness in Service Delivery and Sustainability of Kerala Sustainable Urban Development Projects.” Her areas of research interest are Finance and Marketing. Starting her career as an intern at Chartered Accountant and completing her intermediate at ICAI, she turned to the teaching profession in 2008. Dr. Rekha has an experience of around 14 years in the teaching field. She also has been a resource person for career guidance classes at different schools. With nearly 15 publications, she has also authored three books that are syllabus-oriented.

What is the latest program that you are offering in your institute/dept which will help students outperform and stand apart from the crowd?

Our department is offering a four-year UG programme, B.Com. (honours) with two batches and two electives; Finance and Co-operation and Marketing and Financial Markets. Along with this, we have two more batches that are following the CBCS pattern with a specialisation in Finance, Taxation, and Marketing. We also have two more postgraduate courses, Master of Commerce and Master of Commerce and Management. Students taking Finance and Tax at the undergraduate level can opt for a Master of Commerce with a specialisation in Tax or a Master of Commerce and Management.


What are the factors that make this program the best for the students to opt?

Our curriculum covers the trending and relevant topics of commerce, such as accounting, finance, advertising, management, and economics, which are essential. Our specialisations, or concentrations, allow our students to tailor their training to their career goals. Along with this, the department has skilled teachers who not only have instructional qualifications but also combine real-life experience with classroom teaching.


What will you say are the “best practices” in the course you’re offering?

We have interactions with industrial experts, internships, and an alumni network that provides valuable practical insights and potential job opportunities. Our programs offer hands-on learning experiences for learners through case studies and group projects. These help our students grasp the practical applications along with the theoretical knowledge they have acquired.

What are some valuable insights into the program that you are offering at your institute/dept.?

The programs offered at our institution help our students to have a basic knowledge of business and help to inculcate in them the seeds of entrepreneurship at an early stage. It also makes it easy for them to transition to the workforce and meet industry requirements as well. Our teachers help them build a successful career in Commerce on a long-term basis.


How does the program ensure that students are being prepared for the future?

Our curriculum has been framed for the undergraduate and postgraduate course requirements in Commerce. They ensure the inclusion of modern industry developments, technological improvements, and international commercial enterprise practices. This enables the students to combine textbook information and apply it to actual workplace situations.


How did you train yourself/faculty to deliver this program to the students?

We have eight faculty members in our department who have research degrees in different areas of commerce. The research centre of the department takes active participation in the research fields of Financial Markets, Green Marketing, Human Resource Management, Tourism, etc. They have also contributed towards the development of the various thrust areas of research. Moreover, the faculty members are encouraged to attend workshops and faculty development programmes to update themselves on the latest trends in Commerce.
